First decide which Sonic the Hedgehog 3 you mean. The title refers to the 1994 Genesis/Mega Drive game and the 2024 motion picture, whose music was released as a separate film-score album. They are unrelated recordings. For the game, compare the original Genesis/Mega Drive release, the Windows Sonic & Knuckles Collection presentation, and Sonic Origins. For the movie, use the official Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (Music from the Motion Picture) album by Tom Holkenborg.
The most important qualification is that Sonic Origins does not preserve every original Genesis sound. SEGA social media manager Katie Chrzanowski was quoted by VGC saying, “Jun Senoue has been working really hard to adapt the original music that was composed in 1993 for Sonic Origins.” That establishes an adapted or replacement presentation, not a complete track-by-track map of every difference.

Identify the Sonic 3 release before comparing music
Write down the title, year, platform and edition shown on the product page or in the game’s title screen. A cartridge, a Windows compilation and a modern remaster can all be described casually as “Sonic 3,” while presenting the music differently. The film score should never be mixed into that comparison.

| Windows Sonic & Knuckles Collection | PC compilation presentation of the Sonic 3-era games | Compare it as a separate Windows edition; a complete published track matrix is not established | Compilation scope depends on the included game selection |

Use the first three rows when your question is about game music. Use the last row only when you mean the movie.

Game soundtrack versions worth comparing
Original Genesis/Mega Drive release
The original cartridge release is the reference point for historical authenticity. It is the 1994 game as experienced on Genesis or Mega Drive hardware, with the sound presentation built into that release. If your goal is to hear what players heard at launch, this is the edition to anchor your comparison.
Document the region and hardware when possible. Genesis and Mega Drive branding identifies the same console family in different markets, but a modern emulator, a hardware clone or a remastered compilation can add another layer of uncertainty. A recording made from original hardware is not automatically identical to a digital reissue unless the reissue is identified.
Windows Sonic & Knuckles Collection
The Windows collection is useful as its own historical PC presentation rather than as a synonym for the Genesis version. Compare the edition name shown in the installer, launcher or title screen, then note whether the copy presents Sonic 3 alone or alongside the linked Sonic & Knuckles material.
Available documentation does not establish a definitive, track-by-track comparison between this Windows presentation and every other edition. Do not label a particular cue “identical” or “remixed” unless you have listened to both editions under controlled conditions or have edition-specific documentation.
Sonic Origins
Sonic Origins includes Sonic 3 & Knuckles. SEGA’s manual explains that Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles were originally separate titles but are included together in the collection. That combined scope matters: a listener comparing a playlist or a playthrough may be hearing music from both games, not from Sonic 3 alone.
The collection’s music is not a blanket preservation of every Genesis sound. In a statement reported by VGC, SEGA social media manager Katie Chrzanowski said that Jun Senoue was adapting music originally composed in 1993 for Sonic Origins. Treat that as an edition-level warning. It supports the conclusion that arrangements or sounds changed, but it does not prove that every track differs, nor does it establish one universal reason for each change.
What “different version” can mean for game music
Arrangement and sound presentation
A version comparison can concern the arrangement, instrument timbres, balance, effects, or other playback characteristics. Describe only what you can hear in the editions you actually compare. “The melody is different,” “the percussion has a different character,” and “the transition or loop is presented differently” are observable descriptions; “every song was replaced” is too broad for the evidence available.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteGame scope
Check whether the release contains only Sonic 3 or combines it with Sonic & Knuckles. A combined collection changes the playlist a listener encounters and can make a comparison appear longer or more varied even when the individual Sonic 3 cues have not changed.
Platform and playback chain
Console hardware, a Windows build, an emulator and a modern collection can all alter the listening chain. Keep the platform in your notes, because a claim about “the soundtrack” without an edition is incomplete.

Step-by-step method for comparing the game editions
- Set the question. Choose one of three goals: historical Genesis/Mega Drive authenticity, the Windows collection presentation, or the Sonic Origins version. If you want a broad answer, compare all three separately rather than treating them as one recording.
- Record edition details. Note the exact product name, platform, region if shown, and whether the copy is a standalone game or a compilation. Save a screenshot or written transcription of the title-screen and store metadata so you can identify the recording later.
- Define the game scope. Mark whether your test covers Sonic 3 only or the combined Sonic 3 & Knuckles content. In Sonic Origins, the two originally separate games are included together.
- Use matching checkpoints. Compare the same stage, menu, special sequence or boss cue in each edition. Start at the same musical passage and listen through a complete phrase or loop; short samples can hide a change in the ending or repeat point.
- Keep playback consistent. Use the same headphones or speakers, volume, channel configuration and recording method for every edition. Do not infer an arrangement change from one copy being louder, wider or more heavily equalized.
- Describe the audible result. Record whether the melody, rhythm, instrumentation, effects, tempo, transition or loop differs. Separate an audible observation from an explanation of why it happened.
- Check the claim against edition-level evidence. The established public statement concerns adaptation for Sonic Origins; it is not a complete catalog of substitutions. If a difference is not documented, identify it as your listening observation and avoid generalizing to every track.
- Publish a comparison table. Include the edition, platform, game scope, cue tested, audible difference and confidence level. A note such as “difference heard in the tested cue; no complete catalog available” is more accurate than a sweeping claim.
How to document a useful game-soundtrack comparison
Use one row per cue rather than one verdict for an entire edition. A practical worksheet can contain these columns:
- Edition and platform: for example, original Genesis/Mega Drive, Windows Sonic & Knuckles Collection or Sonic Origins.
- Scope: Sonic 3 alone or the combined Sonic 3 & Knuckles content.
- Location of the cue: identify the stage, menu or event using the game’s on-screen name.
- Listening position: beginning, middle, transition or loop point.
- Observed difference: melody, timbre, rhythm, effects, balance or structure.
- Evidence type: direct listening, edition documentation or the reported SEGA statement.
- Confidence: high for a repeatable audible difference in the same passage; limited for an unverified explanation or an untested track.
This format prevents a change in one cue from being presented as proof that every cue changed. It also lets another listener repeat the comparison without guessing which release you used.

For the game, begin with the exact edition you intend to hear rather than searching for a generic “Sonic 3 soundtrack.” An original Genesis or Mega Drive cartridge is a game purchase, not a soundtrack album. The Windows Sonic & Knuckles Collection is likewise a PC game compilation. Sonic Origins, including an Sonic Origins Plus edition where offered, is a collection that lets you hear the combined Sonic 3 & Knuckles presentation; it is not a standalone soundtrack release.
Before buying, check whether a listing is physical or digital, the supported platform, the territory and the exact edition name. A retailer may use “Sonic 3” as shorthand even when the product is a broader collection. Record the listing details you relied on, because platform support and regional availability can change. Do not quote a current price or claim that a particular cartridge, collection or soundtrack pressing is in stock without checking the live seller page.
The film has clearer listening destinations. Paramount Music links the score to Apple Music, Amazon Music and Qobuz. Those links identify services, not a promise of universal access: catalog rights, subscriptions and territory can affect what a listener sees. Open the service in the listener’s country, confirm the album title and match the track count and order before making a recommendation.
Build an apples-to-apples listening test
Choose one cue and make a short log before moving to another. Note the exact start point, whether the passage is an intro, loop or ending, and whether the game is producing additional sound effects. Listen to the same length in every edition using the same headphones or speakers, volume and channel setup. If you make recordings for personal analysis, label each file with the platform and edition immediately; an unlabeled capture can make later conclusions impossible to audit.
Separate three judgments in your notes: what is audible, how confident you are that it is repeatable, and what explanation has actually been documented. For example, “the lead timbre sounds different in the tested stage cue” is an observation. “This proves every track was replaced” is not. The reported SEGA comment supports adaptation for Sonic Origins, but it does not supply a complete substitution list or a reason for every audible change. A careful comparison therefore reports tested cues and leaves untested tracks open.
Film score: a separate 2024 album
The movie has its own release, titled Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (Music from the Motion Picture). Paramount Music credits the score to Tom Holkenborg and lists 33 tracks with a total album time of 1:02:46. Apple Music dates the album to December 20, 2024 and credits the rights to Paramount Pictures under exclusive license to Milan Records, a label of Sony Music Entertainment.
Those are album metadata, not measurements of listening behavior or proof that one edition is preferred. The album page lists Apple Music, Amazon Music and Qobuz as destinations. Actual catalog access can vary by country, subscription, licensing window and time, so check the service in your region when you are ready to listen.

Procedure for checking the film album
- Confirm the title. Look for the full film-album wording, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (Music from the Motion Picture), rather than a game soundtrack label.
- Verify the composer and album metadata. Confirm Tom Holkenborg, 33 tracks and the listed 1:02:46 runtime. A service may display a different duration if it uses an edited or region-specific listing, so record the value shown on the page you used.
- Check the release date. Apple Music lists December 20, 2024. Keep the date attached to the service and album listing; it is not the release date of the 1994 game.
- Compare service listings carefully. Match track titles and order before comparing playback. A service’s availability is not evidence that a separate game edition uses the same music.
- Keep film and game notes separate. Use different tables or files so a 33-track film album is not accidentally counted as part of a game playlist.
Choose the version that matches your listening goal
You want the original 1994 experience
Start with the Genesis/Mega Drive release and identify the hardware or emulator used. This is the appropriate reference when “original soundtrack” means the music presentation associated with the 1994 game.
You want the Windows-era presentation
Use the Windows Sonic & Knuckles Collection as its own edition. Record the exact compilation and test the same cues against the Genesis release instead of assuming the PC version is either a perfect port or a wholesale remake.
You want the modern combined collection
Choose Sonic Origins when you want Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles presented together. Expect an adapted music presentation and verify individual tracks before making a detailed claim about what changed.
You want music from the 2024 movie
Use the Paramount film album. Its 33-track, 1:02:46 listing and December 20, 2024 Apple Music date identify it as the motion-picture score, not a remaster of the 1994 game soundtrack.

Mixing the game and film
Mistake: treating every release with “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” in its name as one soundtrack family. Correction: classify the item as 1994 game, Windows game collection, modern game collection or 2024 film album before listening.

Calling Sonic Origins a bit-perfect Genesis copy
Mistake: assuming the modern collection preserves all original sounds. Correction: note the reported SEGA explanation that music was adapted, then verify the specific cue you are discussing.
Claiming every track changed
Mistake: extending an observed difference or an edition-level statement to the entire soundtrack. Correction: publish the tested cue and mark untested tracks as unverified.
Ignoring combined game content
Mistake: comparing a playlist containing both games with Sonic 3 alone. Correction: record whether the edition includes Sonic & Knuckles; Sonic Origins does.
Treating streaming availability as permanent
Mistake: promising that a service carries the film album everywhere or indefinitely. Correction: check Apple Music, Amazon Music or Qobuz in the listener’s territory at the time of listening and identify the listing used.

Using a retailer listing as proof of a soundtrack pressing
Mistake: inferring that a physical game or film soundtrack is currently in stock from an old listing. Correction: verify the edition, platform, region, authorized seller and current inventory before making a purchasing claim. Current physical soundtrack inventory is not established by the album metadata alone.
A compact decision checklist
- Have you specified game or movie?
- For the game, have you named Genesis/Mega Drive, Windows Sonic & Knuckles Collection or Sonic Origins?
- Have you stated whether the game content is Sonic 3 alone or Sonic 3 & Knuckles together?
- Have you separated audible observations from explanations about why a change occurred?
- Have you avoided claiming a complete track-by-track map when none is documented?
- For the film, have you identified Tom Holkenborg, 33 tracks, 1:02:46 and the December 20, 2024 listing date?
- Have you checked regional service availability instead of assuming a global catalog?
Frequently Asked Questions
Does “Sonic the Hedgehog 3 soundtrack” mean the game or the movie?
It can mean either the 1994 Genesis/Mega Drive game or the 2024 motion picture. Identify the year and medium before comparing anything; the film album is separate from every game edition.
Does Sonic Origins include only Sonic 3?
No. Sonic Origins includes Sonic 3 & Knuckles. SEGA’s manual explains that the games were originally separate, so notes and playlists should identify when the combined content is being used.
Did Sonic Origins change every Sonic 3 track?
That has not been established as a complete track-by-track fact. SEGA social media manager Katie Chrzanowski, quoted by VGC, said Jun Senoue adapted music composed in 1993 for Sonic Origins. Use that as an edition-level warning, then report only cues you have actually checked.
How many tracks are on the Sonic 3 movie album?
Paramount Music lists 33 tracks and a total runtime of 1:02:46 for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (Music from the Motion Picture). Apple Music lists December 20, 2024 as the album’s release date.
Where can I listen to the film score?
Paramount Music links Apple Music, Amazon Music and Qobuz. Availability can differ by country, subscription and licensing period, so verify the listing in the listener’s region rather than promising universal access.
Is Sonic Origins Plus a soundtrack album?
No. It is a game collection that includes Sonic 3 & Knuckles, so it can provide the collection’s music presentation during play. Check the exact platform, physical or digital format, region and seller listing before buying.
How much do the different game versions cost?
There is no single reliable price for the Genesis/Mega Drive release, the Windows collection or Sonic Origins editions. Prices and stock depend on platform, format, region and seller. Check the current authorized listing and do not treat an old marketplace entry as proof of present inventory.

How should I cite a difference I hear?
Name the edition and platform, game scope, exact stage or menu cue, listening position and the audible change. Mark whether the claim comes from direct listening or documentation, and avoid extending one tested cue to the entire soundtrack.
The Bottom Line
Start by separating the 1994 game from the 2024 film. For game music, identify Genesis/Mega Drive, the Windows Sonic & Knuckles Collection or Sonic Origins, then compare matching cues while recording platform and game scope. Origins combines Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles and uses an adapted music presentation, but no complete track-by-track map is established. For the movie, use Tom Holkenborg’s distinct 33-track album, listed at 1:02:46 and dated December 20, 2024 on Apple Music. Verify regional availability, edition details and current stock whenever you recommend a way to listen.
