To evaluate a wide receiver beyond the box score, separate opportunity from performance. Start with how often and where the player ran routes, then examine target difficulty, efficiency, and yards after the catch relative to expectation. No single stat captures a receiver’s full contribution.

Why catches, yards, and touchdowns are not enough

Receiving totals combine a player’s ability with playing time, team passing volume, route assignment, quarterback decisions, and the kinds of targets he receives. A reserve who runs few routes has fewer chances to accumulate yards than a full-time starter. A receiver sent deep may have fewer catches and a lower catch rate than one who gets short, high-percentage targets.

Use box-score totals to describe what happened, not to explain why. Add opportunity, deployment, and context before drawing conclusions about performance.

How to evaluate a wide receiver beyond the box score

1. Establish role and opportunity

Check routes run, route participation when available, targets, and the receiver’s share of team opportunities. These figures help distinguish a full-time route runner from a rotational player or a specialist. Pair rate statistics with the underlying route or target counts: a rate based on limited opportunities is less conclusive, and there is no universal minimum sample established here.

2. Look at deployment and route mix

Ask where and how often the receiver is being used. A player running screens and short routes faces different target and catch conditions from one assigned to go routes or other deeper patterns. NFL Next Gen Stats’ route-recognition model uses tracking data to classify high-level route types; its explainer says route data are capped at the forward pass or a set post-snap time to reduce noise from broken plays and movement after the catch. Route totals and route-specific results therefore depend on the provider’s classification rules. NFL’s route-recognition explainer

That same NFL article reports that, in its dataset, the average pass catcher ran a go route on 22.3% of routes and go routes were targeted 10.8% of the time. These are figures from that article’s dataset, not current-season constants or individual benchmarks; they illustrate why route mix and targeting should be considered together.

3. Measure efficiency in context

Once you understand opportunity, add per-target or per-route measures. NFL Next Gen Stats’ route-recognition explainer discusses EPA per target, catch rate, and catch rate over expectation (CROE). EPA describes a play’s change in expected value based on factors such as down, distance, and field position; per target, it helps distinguish situation-sensitive value from yardage alone. It is not a standalone measure of receiver skill.

CROE compares a receiver’s catches with modeled completion probabilities for the targets. It can help contextualize catch results by difficulty, but the output depends on the provider’s model and inputs. Name the provider and season when reporting it rather than treating all versions as interchangeable.

4. Read separation and coverage with care

Separation can help describe whether a receiver gets open, but the label does not guarantee a common formula across sources. NFL Next Gen Stats discusses separation from the nearest defender and shows that typical separation differs by route. Pro Football Focus describes its 2024 “separation percentage” as how often a receiver beats coverage to get open. Those provider-specific measures should not be combined or compared as though they were one universal stat. PFF’s 2024 advanced-metrics announcement

Target depth and coverage conditions matter too. The NFL’s 2025 metric update describes an occlusion-aware feature in completion probability, illustrating that target difficulty involves more than a receiver’s raw catch percentage. Models change, so check the relevant season’s definition before using a current ranking. NFL’s 2025 metric update

5. Separate yards after catch from yards after catch above expectation

Raw yards after catch (YAC) tell you how far a receiver advanced after making the catch. Expected YAC (xYAC), from NFL Next Gen Stats, estimates the expected post-catch yardage from tracking context at the moment of the catch. YAC Success Rate indicates whether the receiver gained more or less than expectation on a per-play basis. These model-based measures offer context for after-catch outcomes, but they remain estimates rather than a complete grade. NFL’s xYAC explainer

How to compare receivers with different target totals

Compare like with like: use the same season, provider, and definitions where possible. A useful comparison checks each player’s role and exposure before comparing rates or outcomes.

Comparison question What to examine Why it matters
Did both players have similar roles? Routes run, route participation, and team opportunity share Totals depend on playing time and how often the offense puts a player into a route.
Were they asked to run similar routes? Route mix and target depth Route types face different target rates, catch conditions, and potential yardage.
How much and what kind of opportunity did they receive? Targets, target share, and target difficulty Target volume shows opportunity; difficulty helps interpret the resulting catches and misses.
What did they produce? Catches, receiving yards, and touchdowns These describe outcomes, but do not by themselves explain role or efficiency.
How efficiently did they use opportunities? EPA per target, CROE, or another clearly defined per-route or per-target measure Efficiency measures add context to totals, but depend on provider definitions and models.
What happened after the catch? Actual YAC alongside xYAC or YAC Success Rate Expected-value comparisons add context to post-catch gains.

Use this framework to describe evidence, not to manufacture a single definitive ranking. A receiver with fewer yards may have had fewer routes or more difficult targets; a receiver with strong totals may have benefited from greater opportunity. The figures help identify those possibilities, but do not prove their cause by themselves.

What the tracking and model-based numbers can—and cannot—tell you

NFL Football Operations says its tracking system captures player location, speed, distance traveled, and acceleration 10 times per second, and charts individual movements within inches. NFL Next Gen Stats uses tracking data for metrics and advanced statistics. The measurements support detailed analysis, but derived statistics still reflect a provider’s definitions and modeling choices. NFL Next Gen Stats overview

  • Keep the season and data provider attached to proprietary metrics such as CROE, separation, xYAC, or YAC Success Rate.
  • Do not interpret a low total as proof of poor play or a high total as proof of efficiency.
  • For rate statistics, show the route or target count and account for limited exposure.
  • Check for updated definitions when comparing seasons, particularly when a provider changes its model.
