Estimate a cellular IoT device’s battery life by dividing the battery’s usable capacity by the average current drawn by the complete device over its real operating cycle. Include radio attach and transmission, listening, retries, sleep, tracking updates, sensors, the MCU and power-conversion losses. A modem’s sleep-current figure—or a battery’s nameplate capacity—cannot predict runtime on its own.
Start with the right calculation
For a battery capacity in milliamp-hours and average current in milliamps, a first-order estimate is:
runtime_hours = usable_capacity_mAh / average_current_mA
Convert hours to years by dividing by 8,760. This is an estimate, not a guarantee of field life: it assumes the usable capacity and average current represent the actual cell, load profile and conditions.

For a device that operates in several states, calculate its time-weighted average current:
average_current = sum(current_in_state × time_in_state) / total_cycle_time
Keep units consistent. One practical method is to add the charge used in each state over a full cycle, express that total in mAh, then divide by the cycle duration in hours. If the design is specified in energy, calculate in watt-hours and average watts instead. For batteries in series, do not add their mAh capacities; use the battery pack’s rated capacity at the relevant voltage or calculate in energy units.

Before estimating current, write down the behavior the estimate is meant to support. A device that reports once a day and can wait for its next wake-up to receive commands has a different energy budget from one that must be reachable promptly at any time.

LTE-M and NB-IoT are complementary options, not interchangeable guarantees of coverage or battery life. Build a whole-device duty-cycle model
List each operating state, its current, duration and expected frequency. Use current measured at the battery or power input for the finished device wherever possible, so the calculation includes losses outside the modem.
| State or event | What to include |
|---|---|
| Network search, attach and registration | Initial connection and later reacquisition, including failed attempts or roaming where plausible. |
| Uplink and protocol exchange | Radio transmission, protocol overhead, acknowledgements, downlink response and connection release—not just payload airtime. |
| Receive and paging | Listening windows after wake-up and any scheduled paging occasions required for downlink reachability. |
| Retries and difficult radio conditions | Retransmissions, failed attachment, cell reselection and coverage-enhancement repetitions. |
| Sleep and periodic network activity | PSM or eDRX sleep, tracking-area updates, keep-alives and application traffic that occurs between reports. |
| Non-radio electronics | MCU, memory, sensors, GNSS if present, regulator quiescent current and other always-on circuitry. |
Multiply each state’s current by its duration, then account for how often it occurs in the full cycle. Do not model every report as one clean, successful uplink if retries or recovery are credible. Include infrequent events over the intended service period when their cumulative charge could matter. GSMA’s energy-efficiency paper likewise emphasizes considering energy use across lower protocol layers and higher application layers.
Understand how PSM and eDRX change the estimate
PSM: lower idle consumption, limited reachability
Power Saving Mode can let a device preserve network registration while avoiding some of the energy cost of detaching and reattaching. In PSM sleep, however, the device generally cannot be paged, so it is not reachable for an immediate downlink. The GSMA NB-IoT deployment guide describes PSM as a way to conserve power and says it can “potentially achieve a 10-year battery life.” That is a possible outcome for an appropriate optimized use case, not a universal runtime prediction.

eDRX: a reachability-versus-energy trade-off
Extended Discontinuous Reception lets the receiver sleep between paging occasions. It can reduce listening energy while retaining some opportunity for downlink delivery, and may be used with PSM. Less frequent listening generally means longer wait for a device to hear a downlink. The available feature and timer settings are negotiated with the network, so do not assume that a requested configuration is active.
Timers must match application behavior and network acceptance
GSMA’s configuration guidance quotes Nicolas Damour, Director, Technology Partnership Development at Sierra Wireless: “the value of T3412 depends on the application, and should be set to whichever typical interval the device is expected to send data to the network.” The guidance also explains that T3324’s active period governs how long the device listens for incoming messages after waking. Measure or verify the timers the target operator actually accepts; requested values alone do not establish the device’s real sleep and listening schedule.
Measure current on the finished device
Module data is useful as an initial bound, but it is not a final whole-device estimate. Measure the completed hardware and firmware with the intended antenna, supply, SIM, network mode, payload, reporting interval and sleep configuration. Capture a long enough trace to include the complete periodic cycle, while sampling fast enough to capture brief radio bursts. A low-current power analyzer can help; check its resolution for deep sleep and its bandwidth or sample rate for transmission peaks.
GSMA TS.09 v13.0, listed in 2025, describes representative battery-life and current-consumption measurements that may help extrapolate complicated usage scenarios, while cautioning that “Whilst the figures are not intended to provide a definitive power consumption figure for UE, they may be used to extrapolate indicative power consumption data for complicated usage scenarios.” Treat standardized or vendor figures as inputs to a model, not a substitute for measuring the intended device and service behavior. See the GSMA TS.09 technique.

Convert nominal capacity into usable capacity
Use the capacity the device can actually draw under its load and operating conditions, not the cell’s headline rating by itself. Usable capacity can be reduced by discharge cutoff voltage, temperature, pulse-current limits and voltage sag, aging reserve, self-discharge, converter efficiency and capacity left inaccessible by the load profile. Battery chemistry and power-pulse capability matter for cellular devices, which can demand brief high-current bursts; GSMA discusses these design considerations in its battery-selection article.
There is no single derating percentage that applies to every cell and device. If the manufacturer provides discharge curves and pulse limits, use them for the selected cell at the expected temperature and load. Document assumptions for cutoff voltage, end-of-life reserve, temperature, self-discharge and conversion efficiency alongside the runtime estimate.
Validate the estimate and report a range
- Measure current profiles under the intended firmware and network settings, then calculate charge consumed over repeated complete cycles.
- Repeat tests under representative good, typical and difficult coverage. Weak coverage can trigger additional repetitions, which consume power and may reduce time between battery replacement or recharge, as the GSMA deployment guide notes.
- Compare measured charge per cycle with the modeled charge; investigate gaps such as uncounted listening time, retries, tracking updates or converter losses.
- Recalculate using realistic usable capacity and report conservative, base and optimistic estimates with the assumptions that drive the difference.
Call the result a bench estimate if it comes from bench conditions. A field-life claim requires conditions representative of actual deployment, including the operator, coverage, temperature, reporting behavior and accepted network timers. Current public guidance does not establish a universal cellular IoT runtime or a measured, generally applicable ten-year result; a defensible number depends on the device, battery and service conditions.
