You can schedule a downgrade from Google AI Pro to Google AI Plus in Google One: open Gemini, go to Settings & help → Manage subscription, then choose Manage membership → Change membership plan and select Google AI Plus under Downgrade options. Google says the change normally starts at the beginning of your next billing cycle, so Pro benefits continue through the current paid period.
The important qualifications are storage and chat access. Google’s help wording says that when AI Pro ends, you cannot start new chats with Pro or continue chats created with Pro. It does not state that chat records are immediately deleted. AI Plus storage also varies by market and account; the cited Google One plan information lists 400 GB and 2 TB variants, while AI Pro is listed at 5 TB in that help context. Check the exact quota shown to you before confirming, and preserve any chat information you must be able to use later.
What happens when you downgrade from Google AI Pro to Google AI Plus?
A downgrade is scheduled rather than applied immediately in the normal Google One flow. Your AI Pro membership remains active until the end of the current billing cycle, and Google AI Plus begins at the next cycle boundary. Until that date, the Pro plan’s benefits remain available under Google’s stated timing policy.
At the transition, two changes matter most:
- Gemini access: Google says you can no longer start new chats with Pro or continue chats created with Pro after AI Pro ends.
- Storage quota: Your account moves to the AI Plus quota offered for your billing location and account. If your combined Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos usage is above that quota, storage-related services can be restricted.
The published guidance describes an access limitation for Pro chats, not an immediate deletion of the conversation records. Because it does not promise that Pro-created chats remain continuable, treat important conversations as information to preserve before the effective date rather than as a guaranteed archive you can keep working in.

What should you check before choosing AI Plus?
Do two checks before selecting the downgrade: measure your current storage use and identify Gemini information that you may need outside a Pro-only chat.
Check the storage that your account is using
Open Google One’s storage details and note the totals attributed to Drive, Gmail, and Photos. Compare that total with the exact AI Plus tier displayed in your plan picker. Google’s help material lists 400 GB and 2 TB AI Plus variants, but availability and benefits depend on the account and billing location; the figures are not a guarantee that either tier will appear for you.
Use the quota shown in your own checkout screen as the deciding value. A family or shared-storage arrangement, other Google One purchases, or a different billing country can produce a different offer from the one described in general help documentation.
Identify chats and outputs that need independent preservation
Make a short list of conversations whose prompts, answers, uploaded material, or generated plans you may need after Pro ends. Before the downgrade takes effect, manually copy the text you need into a document or another system you control, and save any files or notes you rely on. This is a practical safeguard; Google’s plan documentation does not promise continued access to Pro-created chats after the plan ends.
Decide whether a smaller quota is workable
If your current usage is close to the AI Plus limit, plan the cleanup before the billing boundary. Large videos, device backups, old email attachments, and duplicate Photos items are common sources of unexpected usage, but only remove content after checking that it is not needed. If you cannot get below the offered quota, budget for additional storage rather than allowing the account to remain over quota.

- Go to gemini.google.com and sign in to the Google account that owns AI Pro.
- Open Settings & help, then choose Manage subscription. Gemini opens the relevant Google One membership page.
- Select Manage membership, followed by Change membership plan.
- In Downgrade options, choose Google AI Plus.
- Use See all benefits, when that option appears, to inspect the storage quota and the features included in the offered Plus tier.
- Review the displayed price, effective date, storage amount, and payment method. Confirm the change or subscribe as prompted.
Save or screenshot the confirmation showing the scheduled date and the new quota. The confirmation is useful if the membership page later shows more than one plan or if you need to contact the billing channel that sold the subscription.

Android offers two documented entry points. Both lead to Google One’s membership controls.
Google One app
- Open the Google One app and tap Menu.
- Choose Settings, then Change membership plan.
- Select Google AI Plus under the downgrade choices, review the quota and effective date, and confirm.
Gemini app
- Open Gemini and tap your profile picture.
- Choose Manage subscriptions.
- Continue to the Google One plan picker, select Google AI Plus, and complete the review and confirmation screens.
If the app does not show the membership you expect, verify that it is signed in to the same Google account that pays for AI Pro. An account switch can make the plan controls appear to be missing.
How do I downgrade on an iPhone or iPad?
For an iPhone or iPad, open Gemini in a browser and follow Settings & help → Manage subscription. The link opens Google One, where you use Manage membership → Change membership plan and select AI Plus.
The billing channel matters. If you bought the subscription through Apple, the change may have to be made in Apple’s subscription controls rather than in Google One. Open the Apple account’s subscription settings, locate the Google subscription, and use the available plan-change or cancellation controls there. If the subscription came from a mobile carrier or another third-party provider, Google says that provider’s website or app must handle the change.
When does the downgrade take effect?
Google’s plan policy says a downgraded plan remains active until the end of the current billing cycle and takes effect at the start of the next billing cycle. The exact date is the one shown in your membership confirmation, not necessarily the day you press confirm.

Until that date, continue to use Pro features as normal, but do not assume that a Pro-created Gemini conversation will remain continuable after the transition. Use the remaining time to preserve information and bring storage below the new quota if necessary.
Will I lose my Gemini chats after AI Pro ends?
Google’s published limitation is specific: after AI Pro ends, you will not be able to start new chats with Pro or continue chats created with Pro. The wording does not say that all chat records are immediately erased, so “lose” should be understood as a loss of the documented Pro-chat capability rather than a guaranteed instant deletion.
What “cannot continue” means in practice
A conversation that depended on Pro can become read-only for your purposes: you may be unable to send the next prompt in that thread or resume it with Pro features. The documentation does not promise that switching to Plus will convert the thread into a fully continuable Plus chat, nor does it specify how every historical thread will be displayed.

How to preserve useful information
- Copy key prompts and answers into a document before the effective date.
- Download or separately save files that were attached to, produced by, or referenced in a conversation.
- Record the conversation title and date so you can locate the original record if it remains visible but cannot be continued.
- Remove personal or confidential material from any copy that you store outside the Google account.
These steps preserve the content you need without making an unsupported promise about the future behavior of Gemini’s chat history.
What happens to Drive, Gmail, and Photos when the new quota is smaller?
The downgrade changes the storage allowance associated with the membership. Existing usage is measured across Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos, so compare the combined total rather than looking only at Drive.

If your account stays over quota for two years or longer, Google’s storage policy says all content in the account may be deleted. That long-term policy is why an over-quota account should be corrected promptly rather than treated as a harmless temporary state.

What should I do after scheduling the downgrade?
Use the interval before the billing boundary to verify both the date and your storage position.
- Open the Google One membership page and confirm the displayed effective date.
- Check the storage breakdown again after any cleanup, including Drive, Gmail, and Photos.
- Finish copying information from Pro-created Gemini chats that you need to continue using.
- After the new plan starts, check the membership page to confirm that AI Plus is active and note the quota shown there.
- If the account is over quota, free space or purchase additional storage promptly so service restrictions do not interrupt mail, file creation, synchronization, or photo backup.

You can use the same Google One membership controls to review the plans available to your account at that time. The available tiers, prices, and benefits can change by billing location and date, so a future plan picker—not the earlier confirmation—is the source to check.
Does Google One count Gmail messages toward the AI Plus storage limit?
Yes. Google storage is shared across Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos. A mailbox with large attachments can therefore push the account over the new quota even when the Drive section by itself appears to fit.
What if I am already over the AI Plus quota on the day it starts?
