Editing the YouTube title changes the metadata for the whole broadcast; it does not create an episode-by-episode title track.
Why one continuous stream has one YouTube title
YouTube distinguishes the incoming live feed from the viewer-facing broadcast. The Live Streaming API documentation says, “The broadcast represents exactly one YouTube video.” That broadcast has a title and description for the video as a whole; the feed is a separate stream resource with its own fields. YouTube LiveBroadcasts API reference and Life of a Broadcast describe this model.
You can edit broadcast metadata, including its title, but that remains metadata for the same continuous live video. It is not a native control for displaying a different episode title as the program moves from one episode to another. YouTube Help explains that stream metadata can be selected or edited when creating, scheduling, or editing a stream: Manage live stream settings.
Show each episode title in the video output
- Choose a stable title for the continuous show. Before going live, give the YouTube broadcast a title that identifies the podcast and the continuous nature of the stream—for example, the show name followed by “Live” or “Continuous Episodes.” Avoid using one episode’s name as the permanent title if the stream will move on to others.
- Prepare a title card for each episode. In the production system or encoder that creates the video viewers see, add a graphic at the start of each episode with its title. A lower third can also identify the episode, and can be shown again after breaks. These graphics must be part of the outgoing video; changing YouTube metadata alone will not put a title card on screen.
- Check the graphic in the actual program output. Confirm the title is legible at typical mobile viewing size and appears when the episode begins. This is a production check: YouTube’s metadata documentation does not prescribe a graphics workflow.
- Update the YouTube title only when the overall video’s metadata should change. YouTube Help describes editing stream settings, and the API supports updates to broadcast title and description. Use that for the viewer-facing video’s overall information, not as a substitute for episode graphics. The updateable fields are documented in LiveBroadcasts: update.
- Give viewers a way to orient themselves. Consider putting episode names and timestamps in the description so viewers can identify what has played. YouTube says DVR, when enabled, lets viewers pause, rewind, and continue during a stream; check the controls available for your stream in YouTube Studio. This does not establish that native live chapters are available.
Which title field are you changing?
For most creators, the key distinction is straightforward: the broadcast title is the title associated with the viewer-facing live video, while the stream is the incoming feed. The API documents a separate title field on the stream resource as well; its documented 1-to-128-character range applies to that stream-resource title, not necessarily to the broadcast/video title. See the LiveStreams API reference.

| Approach | What viewers see | Best use | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Edit the YouTube broadcast title | The title in the listing or on the live video | Correcting or updating overall video metadata | It changes metadata for the continuous video, not an in-video episode slate. |
| Add a title card or lower third to the program | The current episode’s name in the video itself | Identifying episodes as they begin, including for viewers who arrive midstream | The graphic must be prepared and included in the outgoing production. |
| Add episode names and timestamps to the description | Episode orientation in the video description | Helping viewers find episode information and navigate the program | It does not display the current title over the video. |
