You can stop unsolicited AI suggestions without necessarily turning off every form of code completion, but the right setting depends on your editor and the suggestion surface you want to control. In Visual Studio, Copilot has a documented Manual invocation setting; in VS Code, you can disable AI broadly or control Copilot inline and next-edit suggestions separately, but the cited documentation does not establish a universal manual-only switch for every Copilot completion surface. JetBrains AI Assistant has its own inline-completion controls and invocation shortcut.
What should you turn off: AI suggestions or all code completion?
First decide whether you want to suppress only suggestions that appear without being requested, or disable the editor’s AI features more broadly. These are different outcomes: a broad AI switch can hide chat or disable an assistant extension, while a completion-specific control targets inline suggestions more narrowly.
“Manual” also means different things across editors. It may be an explicit invocation mode, a command or shortcut you call when needed, or simply the absence of automatic suggestions. Do not assume that switching off one inline-completion setting also disables chat, next-edit suggestions, another AI provider, or ordinary editor completion.
- To stop AI suggestions appearing automatically: identify each automatic surface—especially inline completions and next-edit suggestions—and disable its control.
- To keep AI available on demand: use an explicit Manual mode or trigger only where the editor’s documentation says that workflow is supported.
- To remove AI features more broadly: use the editor’s broad AI switch, understanding that it may disable more than completions.
The controls below are based on official Microsoft and JetBrains documentation reviewed on October 25, 2026. Settings, defaults, shortcuts, and menu locations can change, so confirm the labels in the version installed on your computer.

Plan the change before touching settings
Write down the behavior you want to preserve. Many developers want normal language-server completion, parameter hints, or snippets to keep working while AI-generated ghost text disappears. Others need a project-wide prohibition on built-in AI, including chat. Those goals call for different scopes and settings.
- Name the provider. Is the suggestion from GitHub Copilot, Visual Studio’s Copilot integration, JetBrains AI Assistant, IntelliCode, or another extension? The controls in this guide are provider-specific.
- Name the surface. Inline ghost text, next-edit suggestions, chat, and ordinary completion are separate features. Test and configure each one rather than treating “autocomplete” as a single switch.
- Choose the scope. A user setting follows you across workspaces; a workspace setting affects one project. A language-specific value can override a general Copilot value in VS Code.
- Decide whether on-demand AI is required. Visual Studio documents a Manual invocation mode. VS Code documents an explicit trigger command in a particular metered-connection context, but not a universal manual-only mode for every Copilot surface. JetBrains documents a completion shortcut, while its settings still need to be checked for the installed IDE and version.
This short inventory prevents a common mistake: applying a broad off switch when you only meant to stop ghost text, or disabling one completion surface while another continues to make unsolicited requests.
How do you disable AI suggestions in Visual Studio Code?
VS Code offers a broad switch as well as more targeted Copilot controls. If you want all built-in AI features hidden, use the broad setting; if you want to narrow the change to automatic code suggestions, inspect both inline suggestions and next-edit suggestions.

- Open VS Code Settings.
- Search for
chat.disableAIFeatures. - Set the setting to
true. - Choose the appropriate scope: user settings apply to your user configuration, while workspace settings apply to that workspace.
Microsoft’s VS Code setup documentation describes this as a way to hide built-in AI features, including chat and inline suggestions, and to disable Copilot extensions. This is the broad option, not a narrow “stop automatic completions but retain every other AI feature” control. Use it when that wider effect is what you want.
You can change settings in the Settings interface or in settings.json. For example, a user-level JSON setting can be written as:
{
"chat.disableAIFeatures": true
}
For a workspace-specific change, configure the setting in that workspace’s settings rather than changing your user settings. This lets you apply the choice to one project without making it your default for every VS Code workspace.
Scope matters when you share a workspace configuration. A workspace-level choice travels with that project’s configuration and can therefore affect collaborators who open it, while a user-level choice is personal. Check which settings file the Settings editor is changing before you save, especially if you are trying to avoid an unintended project-wide change.

Option 2: Control Copilot inline suggestions
If your goal is specifically to stop Copilot inline suggestions, use github.copilot.enable. VS Code documents this setting as configurable globally or by language. That granularity is useful when, for example, you want to suppress inline suggestions in one language while leaving the setting different elsewhere.

After changing it, check the language-specific entries as well as the general setting. A language-specific value can make the behavior differ between files, so a single global change may not produce the same result in every editor tab. If one project or language still shows ghost text, inspect the effective value for that language rather than repeatedly changing the global toggle.
This is a narrower intervention than chat.disableAIFeatures. It is appropriate when Copilot’s inline completion is the distraction but you still need other built-in AI surfaces. It does not, by itself, establish that chat, next-edit suggestions, or third-party extensions are disabled.
Option 3: Check next-edit suggestions separately
Next-edit suggestions are a separate surface from inline suggestions. Inspect github.copilot.nextEditSuggestions.enabled as well if your aim is to stop unsolicited suggestions throughout an editing session. Turning off inline suggestions alone is not a documented substitute for checking this separate control.

After changing the setting, make a small edit that would normally produce a next-edit proposal and watch for that distinct behavior. If inline ghost text is gone but a proposed change still appears after a completed edit, you are likely seeing the separate next-edit feature and need to address its setting independently.
Can VS Code keep Copilot in a universal manual-only mode?
Do not assume that it can. Microsoft’s inline-suggestions documentation describes a “Trigger Inline Suggestion” command in the context of metered connections, where new automatic requests are not started. That documents an explicit way to request a suggestion in that context; it does not establish a universal switch that converts every Copilot completion surface into manual-only mode.
If you want to keep invoking suggestions on demand, check the command list and the documentation for your installed VS Code and provider versions. Confirm that the specific surface you use—inline completion or another suggestion type—supports the behavior you expect before relying on it. A command that works for metered-connection behavior should not be presented as proof that all automatic requests are disabled in every configuration.
How do you make Copilot suggestions manual in Visual Studio?
Visual Studio documents a direct Manual invocation setting for Copilot inline suggestions. Set that option if you want inline suggestions to wait for an explicit trigger rather than appearing automatically.

- Open All Settings > Text Editor > Inline Suggestions > General.
- Set Inline Suggestions Invocation to Manual.
- Use the documented trigger shortcut, or customize the keyboard shortcut if you prefer another key combination.
The Visual Studio documentation lists Alt+, or Alt+. as manual completion triggers. Because shortcuts can be customized and may differ across releases or configurations, check the keyboard mapping in your installed version if neither shortcut works as expected.

This setting is specifically about Copilot inline suggestions. Microsoft discusses IntelliCode separately, so changing Copilot’s invocation setting should not be treated as proof that every other completion provider has also been disabled or made manual. If ordinary completion remains visible, identify whether it is IntelliCode or the language service rather than assuming the Manual setting failed.
Manual invocation changes when a suggestion is requested; it does not necessarily remove the Copilot commands or the rest of the editor’s completion UI. You can therefore test the workflow in two directions: pause after typing to confirm that no unsolicited Copilot ghost text appears, then press the documented shortcut to confirm that an explicit request still produces the expected suggestion.
How do you control AI completion in a JetBrains IDE?
JetBrains documents AI Assistant cloud completion as enabled by default and provides settings for configuring inline completion. Use those settings to control AI Assistant completion, then verify whether other installed plugins have their own automatic suggestions.
- Open the IDE’s Settings or Preferences.
- Go to Editor | General | Code Completion | Inline.
- Review the inline-completion configuration and the available local or cloud model options.
- Use
Alt+Shift+to trigger code completion, as documented by JetBrains.
The menu labels and available options can vary by IDE and release. The documented controls cover AI Assistant completion; they are not a guarantee that every plugin or suggestion provider in the IDE will stop offering automatic completions.
Because cloud completion is documented as enabled by default, do not infer from a fresh installation that the absence of a visible toggle means the feature is already manual. Open the Inline completion page and inspect which local or cloud model is selected. If you need a non-AI workflow, verify that the remaining completion behavior comes from the IDE’s ordinary code-completion system or another deliberately enabled plugin.
Which editor control should you use?
Choose the narrowest control that matches your goal. The comparison below distinguishes broad shutdowns from completion-specific controls and shows where an explicit manual workflow is documented.
| Editor and control | What it changes | Scope or granularity | Manual invocation documented? |
|---|---|---|---|
VS Code: chat.disableAIFeatures |
Hides built-in AI features, including chat and inline suggestions, and disables Copilot extensions, according to Microsoft’s setup documentation. | User or workspace | Not a universal manual-only mode. |
VS Code: github.copilot.enable |
Controls Copilot inline suggestions. | Global or by language | The documentation describes a trigger command in metered-connection behavior; it does not establish a universal manual-only mode. |
VS Code: github.copilot.nextEditSuggestions.enabled |
Controls next-edit suggestions separately from inline suggestions. | Separate setting | Not established as a universal manual-only mode. |
| Visual Studio: Inline Suggestions Invocation | Sets Copilot inline suggestion invocation to Manual. | Inline suggestions | Yes; the documentation lists Alt+, or Alt+.. |
| JetBrains IDEs: AI Assistant inline-completion settings | Configures AI Assistant inline completion and local/cloud model options. | AI Assistant completion | JetBrains documents Alt+Shift+ to trigger code completion. |
These controls do not all operate at the same level. A broad AI switch can affect more than completions; a completion setting is narrower; and a manual trigger only provides the on-demand workflow documented for that editor and feature.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How can you keep ordinary completion?
Do not disable a broad AI switch merely because you dislike ghost text if ordinary completion is important to your workflow. Start with the named AI completion control for your editor. In VS Code, that means examining github.copilot.enable and the separate next-edit setting. In Visual Studio, use the Copilot Inline Suggestions Invocation setting and remember that IntelliCode is discussed separately. In JetBrains, configure AI Assistant under the Inline completion page and then identify any remaining provider.

After each change, distinguish the visual behavior. A language-service completion list that appears after an explicit keypress is not necessarily the same feature as translucent inline text that appears while you pause. Likewise, a next-edit proposal can be different from both. This distinction lets you keep the completion mechanism you rely on without leaving an unexamined AI provider active.
How can you check that the change worked?
Test the specific behavior you meant to change rather than relying only on the setting label. Open a file in the relevant language, pause while editing, and see whether the unsolicited AI suggestion still appears. If your editor has more than one suggestion surface, test each one separately.
- Suggestions still appear only in certain languages: revisit the per-language values for
github.copilot.enablein VS Code. - A different suggestion appears after inline completions stop: check whether it is a next-edit suggestion or comes from another provider, then inspect that feature’s own control.
- The setting is missing or named differently: confirm the editor and extension versions, then consult the documentation for those installed versions. These controls and menu locations are subject to change.
- A manual shortcut does nothing: verify the assigned key binding and whether the relevant feature is available and enabled in your current configuration.
- The change works in one project but not another: compare user and workspace settings. A workspace value may override or differ from your user choice.
- Chat disappears unexpectedly: check whether you enabled
chat.disableAIFeatures; that broad switch is intended to hide more than inline completion.
Keep the test narrow: disabling Copilot inline suggestions does not by itself demonstrate that chat, another extension, or every other completion system has been turned off. Likewise, hiding built-in AI features is a broader change than switching one completion surface to manual invocation.
Privacy and data expectations
Microsoft’s Visual Studio Code FAQ states that if AI functionality is disabled in VS Code, or if you are not logged in to a Copilot subscription from VS Code, your data is not sent to Copilot backend services. That statement is specifically about VS Code and Copilot backend services. It is not a blanket promise about every editor, extension, provider, or telemetry category.
If privacy is the reason for changing settings, identify every assistant installed in the editor and read that provider’s own documentation. A VS Code Copilot setting does not automatically govern a separate extension, and a Visual Studio Copilot setting does not describe JetBrains or other products. Confirm the actual provider and scope rather than relying on the word “AI” in a menu.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common pitfalls
- Confusing broad and narrow switches:
chat.disableAIFeaturesis useful for a broad shutdown, but it is excessive if you only want to stop automatic inline text. - Forgetting next-edit suggestions: inline and next-edit controls are separate in VS Code.
- Ignoring language overrides: a global Copilot value may be masked by a language-specific value.
- Assuming one vendor’s workflow applies elsewhere: Visual Studio has a documented Manual mode; VS Code’s cited trigger behavior is narrower; JetBrains exposes its own settings and shortcut.
- Treating ordinary completion as Copilot: IntelliCode, language services, snippets, and plugins can remain active after Copilot is changed.
- Relying on old menu paths: labels, defaults, shortcuts, and extension behavior can change across releases.
- Changing the wrong scope: a user setting may affect every workspace, while a workspace setting may affect only one project.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Does disabling AI in VS Code stop data from being sent to Copilot?
The Visual Studio Code FAQ says that when AI functionality is disabled in VS Code, or when you are not logged in to a Copilot subscription from VS Code, your data is not sent to Copilot backend services. That statement is limited to VS Code and Copilot backend services; it is not a blanket claim about every extension, editor, or telemetry category.
Will turning off AI remove my editor’s ordinary autocomplete?
The documented controls here target built-in AI features or named AI completion surfaces, not a universal setting for every completion system. Whether a separate provider remains active depends on the editor, extensions, and controls enabled in your installation.
Why do the settings in my editor look different from this guide?
Editor menus, defaults, and shortcuts can change between releases, and the available controls may also depend on the installed assistant or extension. Use the setting name in your editor’s settings search where available, and match the documentation to your installed version.

What is the difference between inline and next-edit suggestions in VS Code?
Inline suggestions are the Copilot completion surface controlled by github.copilot.enable. Next-edit suggestions have a separate setting, github.copilot.nextEditSuggestions.enabled. Check both when the goal is to stop unsolicited AI behavior throughout editing.
Can I disable Copilot only for one programming language in VS Code?
VS Code documents github.copilot.enable as configurable globally or by language. Review both the general value and language-specific entries, because a language override can produce different behavior from one file type to another.
Does Visual Studio’s Manual setting disable IntelliCode too?
The documented Manual option applies to Copilot inline suggestions. Microsoft discusses IntelliCode separately, so do not assume that changing Copilot’s invocation setting disables every other completion provider.
Is JetBrains AI Assistant completion automatic by default?
JetBrains documents AI-powered cloud completion as enabled by default. Its inline-completion controls are under Editor | General | Code Completion | Inline, and the documentation lists Alt+Shift+ as a completion trigger.
What if I want to turn off chat but keep code completion in VS Code?
Use the narrowest documented control that matches your goal. The broad chat.disableAIFeatures setting hides built-in AI features including chat and inline suggestions, so it is not the targeted choice when you need to preserve those features selectively. Inspect the Copilot completion settings instead.
Why does an AI suggestion still appear after I changed one setting?
It may be a separate surface, such as next-edit suggestions, a language-specific Copilot value, or another extension. Test the behavior, identify the provider, and inspect that provider’s own setting. One control does not govern every completion system.
Do I need special hardware, software, or a paid product to make these changes?
No physical product is required. The procedures use settings and commands in VS Code, Visual Studio, or a JetBrains IDE. Availability of a particular assistant or shortcut still depends on the editor and extensions installed in your environment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe Bottom Line
Disable the narrowest AI surface that matches your goal. In VS Code, use chat.disableAIFeatures for a broad shutdown, or inspect github.copilot.enable and github.copilot.nextEditSuggestions.enabled for more targeted control. Visual Studio offers a documented Manual invocation mode for Copilot inline suggestions, while JetBrains provides AI Assistant inline-completion settings and an on-demand shortcut. Test each suggestion surface, scope, language, and provider separately, because no single setting is universal across editors.
