Apple Music lets you train its recommendations, but it does not document a manual editor for rearranging or hiding sections on the Home tab. To get better matches, set your preferred genres and artists, mark songs, albums, artists, and playlists as Favorites, use Suggest Less on poor matches, and switch off Use Listening History when a listening session should not shape your profile. Those controls affect recommendations in Home and Made For You; turning off listening history also changes Replay and hides played music from followers. The steps below reflect Apple’s current iOS 27 and macOS 27 guidance, although labels and availability can vary by country or region.

What can you customize in Apple Music Home?

You can change the information Apple Music uses to select recommendations, but not directly design the Home tab’s layout. Apple’s documented controls are preference signals: genre and artist choices, Favorite, Suggest Less, and Use Listening History. Apple does not document controls to drag sections into a new order, pin a section, or permanently hide one.

Home is the personalized surface. It combines tailored recommendations, recently played music, and personal playlists. The separate Made For You area contains playlists built from your listening profile and history. New is an editorial discovery area for releases, mood-based selections, charts, and other new music rather than a second version of your personal Home feed. Apple’s web guide describes these distinctions in its Apple Music web documentation.

How do I set my favorite genres and artists?

Use the taste-selection screen Apple Music shows when Home is first configured. Your choices become the initial profile used for recommendations.

  1. Open Apple Music and select Home.
  2. When the genre choices appear, tap genres you like.
  3. Double-tap genres you love to give them a stronger positive signal.
  4. Touch and hold genres you do not care for to mark them as unwanted.
  5. Tap Next, then make the same three levels of choice for the artists Apple Music displays.

Apple says these selections inform recommendations; they are not a permanent contract. Your later Favorites, Suggest Less choices, and listening history provide additional signals. If you skipped the prompt or want to refine your profile later, the documented item-level controls are the practical way to make corrections because Apple does not provide a published “re-run the entire taste setup” command.

How do I tell Apple Music to recommend more music like something?

Mark a good match as a Favorite. Apple says favoriting songs, albums, artists, and playlists improves Home recommendations, and those favorites can also organize your Library.

On iPhone or iPad

  1. For a song, play it and tap the Favorite control in the Now Playing screen, or touch and hold the song in a list.
  2. For an album or playlist, touch and hold it, tap More, then choose Favorite.
  3. For an artist, open the artist page and tap its Favorite control.

Apple’s cross-platform instructions cover iPhone, iPad, and Android in How to add and find favourites in Apple Music. On Android, the control names and placement follow the current Apple Music app, so use the item’s More menu if a button is not visible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On Mac

In the Music app, open an item’s More menu and choose Favorite. Apple’s Mac guide also places Suggest Less in this menu. Favorites and other preference changes are available to devices signed in to the same Apple Account when the relevant Music features are enabled.

If Favorite is missing, Apple recommends updating the operating system or the Android app. Feature availability can differ by country or region, so an up-to-date installation does not guarantee that every control appears everywhere.

How do I stop a song, album, or playlist from influencing recommendations?

Choose Suggest Less for an item that is a poor fit. Apple says this produces fewer suggestions for similar music; it is a recommendation signal rather than a command to delete the item from your Library or remove it from every Apple Music surface.

  1. On iPhone or iPad, touch and hold the song, album, or playlist.
  2. Tap Suggest Less.
  3. Alternatively, while the item is playing, open the Now Playing screen, tap More, and choose Suggest Less when the option is available.

On Mac, select the item’s More menu and choose Suggest Less. The control applies to the item type Apple presents in that menu; if an artist or a particular Home section is the problem, Apple’s documented guidance does not offer an equivalent “hide this artist everywhere” or “remove this section” switch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Suggest Less for a specific mismatch instead of turning off all history. Disabling history is a broader privacy and profile decision, described below, and also changes Replay.

How do I keep another person’s listening session out of my recommendations?

Turn off Use Listening History before the other person starts listening, then turn it back on when the session ends. Apple says this prevents those listening habits from being used for new recommendations and Replay contents. Apple also says all music played while the setting is off is hidden from your followers.

On iPhone

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps, then Music.
  3. Turn off Use Listening History.

When you want your own listening to count again, return to the same path and turn the setting on. Because the switch affects the profile broadly, check it before troubleshooting recommendations that seem to have stopped adapting.

On Mac

  1. Open the Music app.
  2. Choose Music in the menu bar, then Settings.
  3. In General, clear Use Listening History.

Apple documents the Mac path, Favorite, Suggest Less, and cross-device rating behavior in Rate and personalise music on Mac.

Can a Focus automate this for a child or guest?

Apple suggests creating a custom Focus that switches the setting off during someone else’s listening session. The Focus approach lets you apply a repeatable context rather than relying on memory, but you still need to configure the Focus and verify the Music setting on the device.

What is the difference between Home, Made For You, New, and Discovery Station?

These destinations serve different jobs, so moving between them can make Apple Music feel more controllable even though Home’s sections cannot be manually rearranged.

Surface What it is for What shapes it
Home Personalized recommendations, recently played music, and personal playlists. Your taste profile, Favorites, Suggest Less feedback, and eligible listening history.
Made For You Personalized playlists based on your listening profile and history. The same profile and history signals; on the web, Apple says these playlists appear there when you add them to your Library.
New New releases, mood-based discovery, charts, and other editorial selections. Editorial and release discovery rather than a purely personal recommendation feed.
Discovery Station On iPhone, a station of music you have not played before. Your listening history and taste profile; Apple places it under Home > Stations for You.

Apple describes Home, Made For You, and New in its web guide. Its iPhone discovery guide explains Discovery Station at Find new music with Apple Music on iPhone. Discovery Station is therefore a useful way to request unfamiliar music without treating every new release in New as a recommendation tuned to your personal taste.

Which Apple Music control should I use for each goal?

Choose the narrowest control that matches what you want. A Favorite is positive feedback; Suggest Less is a negative signal for similar recommendations; Use Listening History excludes an entire session from the profile.

Goal Use Effect and trade-off
Get more music resembling a strong match Favorite the song, album, artist, or playlist. Apple says Favorites improve Home recommendations; album, artist, and playlist Favorites are also added to your Library.
See fewer lookalikes to one item or style Suggest Less on the song, album, or playlist. Apple says you receive fewer suggestions for similar music. The item is not automatically deleted from your Library.
Prevent a guest’s or child’s session from changing your profile Turn off Use Listening History, optionally through a custom Focus. New recommendations and Replay contents are adjusted, and Apple says played music is hidden from followers while it is off.
Browse playlists built around your profile Home or Made For You. Made For You uses your listening profile and history; web playlists appear there when added to the Library.
Find unfamiliar tracks Discovery Station on iPhone. It uses your history and taste profile while emphasizing music you have not played.
Browse releases and editorial discovery New. It is a separate discovery destination, not a manual replacement for Home’s personalized sections.

Can I rearrange, hide, or pin sections on the Home tab?

Apple’s reviewed instructions do not document a Home layout editor. You should not expect a supported setting to reorder recommendation rows, pin a favorite row to the top, or permanently hide a category.

The supported approach is to change the inputs that populate Home: select preferred genres and artists, Favorite good matches, use Suggest Less for bad matches, and manage listening history for sessions that should not count. If a row is not useful, use New, Made For You, or Discovery Station as an alternative destination instead of assuming the row can be removed.

How should I use Favorites without filling my Library unexpectedly?

Favorites serve two purposes: they tell Apple Music what you enjoy and, for albums, artists, and playlists, organize those items in the Library. Favorited songs are subject to the Add & Delete Favourite Songs setting described in Apple’s cross-platform article, so whether a favorited song is also added to the Library depends on that preference.

What should I check when recommendations or controls look wrong?

Recommendations changed after someone else used the device

Check Settings > Apps > Music > Use Listening History on iPhone, or Music > Settings > General > Use Listening History on Mac. If it was on during the guest session, those plays may have become part of the profile; Apple’s documented prevention is to switch it off before future guest sessions.

Favorite or Suggest Less is missing

Update iOS, macOS, or the Android Apple Music app. Then try the item’s More menu or the Now Playing screen, where Apple places the controls in its instructions. Apple notes that feature availability may vary by country or region.

Changes do not appear on another device

Confirm that both devices use the same Apple Account and that the Music service is available in your region. Mac documentation says ratings sync among devices signed in to the same Apple Account; recommendation behavior can still vary by surface and by whether listening history is enabled.

You expect a full reset

Apple’s reviewed guidance does not promise an instant reset of the recommendation profile. Use the documented positive and negative signals going forward, and keep unrelated listening out of the profile with Use Listening History when appropriate.

How do star ratings fit into recommendation customization?

Star Ratings are not a general recommendation slider. Apple’s iPhone guide says Show Star Ratings appears only when a song already has a rating in the Mac or Windows library and Sync Library is enabled; ratings apply to songs in the Library and sync across devices signed in to the same Apple Account. For recommendation feedback, Apple’s documented controls are Favorite and Suggest Less.

What is the most reliable way to improve Apple Music recommendations?

Start with explicit signals, then keep the profile clean. Set the initial genres and artists, Favorite items that genuinely fit, and use Suggest Less as soon as a song, album, or playlist is clearly off-target. Before another person listens, disable Use Listening History; after the session, restore it if you want your own plays to shape recommendations and Replay.

Use Home and Made For You for personalized playlists, New for editorial release discovery, and Discovery Station when you want unfamiliar music filtered through your taste profile. This workflow changes what Apple Music can learn from your activity, even though it cannot manually redesign the Home tab.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did my favorite song not appear in my Library?

Favoriting a song and adding it to the Library are separate behaviors controlled by Apple Music settings. Check the Add & Delete Favourite Songs preference; Apple’s cross-platform guidance says that setting determines whether favorited songs are added automatically.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do Apple Music Favorites sync between iPhone, Mac, and Android?

Use the same Apple Account on each device and keep the Apple Music app current. Apple documents cross-platform Favorites, but availability and exact controls can differ by country or region and by app version.

Can I remove one artist from every Apple Music recommendation?

Apple’s documented feedback is item-based: Favorite or Suggest Less on available songs, albums, or playlists. It does not describe a universal block-artist control or a command that removes an artist from every Home section.

Why is Discovery Station playing music I have already heard?

Discovery Station is designed to emphasize music you have not played, but Apple says its selection still uses your listening history and taste profile. Verify that Use Listening History is enabled if you want the station to reflect your current profile; disabling it prevents new listening from shaping recommendations.

Will turning off listening history erase my existing Apple Music profile?

Apple’s guidance describes the switch as stopping use of listening habits for new recommendations and Replay contents, not as deleting your account or Library. It also changes follower visibility for music played while the setting is off, so treat it as a session-control and privacy setting rather than a profile-reset button.
