To create a transcript from a live stream, decide whether you need captions for viewers during the broadcast or a saved text record afterward. Live captions must be configured and sent while streaming; a transcript can usually be added to the recording later. They are separate outputs, and enabling one does not guarantee the other will be retained.
Choose the workflow that matches your goal
- Viewers need text during the broadcast: set up the platform’s live-caption workflow before going live. Depending on the platform, captions may come from the encoder or an external caption feed.
- You need a searchable record afterward: use the recording’s caption or transcript tools after it is available, then proofread and save or publish the result.
- You need both: configure live captions in advance and separately confirm how the platform retains post-event text. Do not assume a live caption feed automatically becomes a downloadable transcript.
When choosing an approach, check whether the platform accepts embedded captions, an external feed, or post-event text; whether it retains a downloadable transcript; who can access it; and whether the event needs a human captioner or automatic speech recognition. Language, audio quality, speaking pace, specialist vocabulary, timing, and export needs also affect the choice.
Create captions for a YouTube Live broadcast
YouTube’s documented live workflow requires captions to be sent to YouTube, either embedded in the video or through supported software that sends them over HTTP. Set this up before the event and check the current requirements for your encoder or caption software in YouTube’s live caption requirements.
Option 1: Send embedded 608/708 captions
- Create or open the stream in YouTube’s live setup.
- Open Settings, then Setup, and turn on Closed captions.
- Choose Embedded 608/708 and save the setting.
- Configure your encoder to send EIA 608/CEA 708 captions with the video.
- Test the captions before the event and confirm they appear as expected.
The 608/708 standard can support up to four language tracks, but YouTube’s cited guidance says YouTube currently supports one caption track. Do not plan on multiple simultaneous caption tracks based only on the standard’s wider capacity.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Option 2: Send captions through supported software
- Enable captions in the event setup.
- Copy the signed HTTP caption ingestion URL that YouTube provides.
- Give that URL to the captioner or configure it in supported caption software.
- Send a test feed before the event. YouTube says each stream entry point accepts one caption feed.
YouTube lists Total Eclipse, Case CATalyst, CaptionMaker, and StreamText.Net as supported software options; some have version requirements. Check the current help page and each product’s compatibility before production because software requirements can change. For events, YouTube advises adding a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay. A delay can help captions stay aligned, but account for it in the event schedule.
Add or refine text after a YouTube stream
Once the stream recording is available, you can add captions in YouTube Studio. The post-stream process is separate from live caption delivery. YouTube documents three methods in its Add subtitles & captions guide.

- Open YouTube Studio and select Subtitles.
- Choose the video and the caption language.
- Select one method: upload a caption file with timings, auto-sync transcript text, or type captions manually.
- Review the text and timing, correct errors, and publish the caption track.
For auto-sync, the transcript must match the spoken language. YouTube cautions that auto-sync is not recommended for videos longer than one hour or for poor audio quality. If automatic captions are available, YouTube says they are published in the video’s default language.
Review names, specialist terms, numbers, fast speech, and overlapping speakers. Speech recognition is a draft to check, not a guaranteed-accurate transcript. An OBS community resource for a Google Speech Recognition caption plugin warns that recognition quality varies with the speaker and subject and can worsen with specialized vocabulary or hectic speech; it does not establish a universal accuracy percentage.

Other platform workflows
Twitch: captions during the stream
Twitch’s Guide to Closed Captions describes captions embedded in streams or provided through broadcast encoders. It also describes an OBS closed-caption plugin that converts speech to captions. Twitch’s official professional live-captioning service is described for Twitch-produced content; do not assume it is automatically available for every streamer’s broadcast.
A third-party OBS Forums resource, Closed Captioning via Google Speech Recognition, says the plugin can caption live streams and VODs and save captions as SRT subtitle files. The resource was last updated July 17, 2019, so check compatibility with current OBS and Twitch versions before relying on it. Its recognition-quality caveats also make proofreading important.

Zoom: enable meeting transcripts for retention
Zoom’s FAQ for its May 2026 update distinguishes live captions from retained speech-to-text data: participants cannot save or download the live captions as a post-meeting asset under that workflow. To retain speech-to-text data, the host or administrator must enable meeting transcripts. Account settings control transcript generation, retention, and who may view or download them. See Zoom’s FAQ about meeting captions and transcript updates for the current account controls.

- No captions appear during a YouTube stream: confirm Closed captions are enabled in the event setup, then check that the encoder is sending the selected embedded format or that the caption software is using the signed ingestion URL.
- A caption feed does not connect: verify that the URL is copied correctly, the software meets YouTube’s current requirements, and the stream entry point is not already using its one caption feed.
- Captions lag behind the event: test timing before broadcast. For event captioning, YouTube advises a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay; coordinate any delay with the event schedule and caption workflow.
- You cannot find a transcript after a Zoom meeting: live captions are not the retained transcript under Zoom’s May 2026 guidance. Ask the host or administrator to check whether meeting transcripts were enabled and whether your account has access.
- Automatic text has errors: proofread against the recording, especially names, numbers, specialist terms, rapid speech, and overlapping voices. If the audio is poor or the video exceeds an hour, YouTube does not recommend auto-sync.
- An older OBS caption plugin no longer works: check its current compatibility with OBS, Twitch, language, and encoder requirements before the next stream; the cited community resource dates to July 17, 2019.
