Start with the game’s current official support portal, not the defunct studio’s social account or a random search result. On Steam, open the game’s Library page, use its Support tab, select “Gameplay or technical issue,” then “I am having another problem” and “Contact Game Support.” That route identifies the publisher or developer now responsible for the title.
Use the platform’s support team for Steam or console authentication, account access, purchases, retail-key registration and platform startup dialogs. Send post-launch bugs, crashes, multiplayer failures, controller problems and third-party DRM issues to the game operator unless the failure is specifically platform-related.
Choose the team that owns the problem
Ownership is determined by what failed, not by where you bought the game. A platform can process a payment while the publisher operates the game’s servers and account system. Routing a ticket to the wrong organization often means a delayed transfer or a request to start over.

Steam’s guidance is explicit: after a game has loaded, errors or unexpected behavior that are not related to Steam authentication or CD keys should go to the game’s developer or publisher. That includes the game’s own crashes, bugs and online failures.

Find the current support portal after a corporate change
A studio may be acquired, a publishing contract may move to another company, or the original operator may close while the game remains available. Treat the storefront listing and in-client links as the starting record of who operates the title now.
Use the storefront and Library listing
- Open the game’s current store page on the platform where you own it.
- Look for the named developer, publisher, “support,” “help” or “account” link.
- On Steam, open Library, select the game, choose the Support tab, and follow Gameplay or technical issue → I am having another problem → Contact Game Support.
- Compare the destination domain with the publisher name shown on the current store page. A legitimate form should use the operator’s own domain or the platform’s domain.
- Save the case number and the exact portal address in your notes; a later ownership change can make the original page difficult to find.
Verify that a help page is genuine
Search advertisements and unofficial “account recovery” pages can imitate a publisher’s branding. Type the known company domain manually, use the support link inside the game or storefront, and check that the page requests only information appropriate to the case. Never send a password, one-time authentication code or recovery code in a ticket.
Use public channels only for directions
Social posts and community servers can confirm that a service interruption is widespread or point to a new portal, but they are poor places to submit ownership evidence. Ubisoft says its online form is for account and other questions and that its Discord and X channel are not for account-related support. Keep receipts, account IDs and identity details inside the private form.
Prepare one complete first ticket
A detailed first submission reduces the number of clarification rounds. Steam asks players to have their Steam account username and the exact error message, or a detailed description of the unexpected behavior, ready.

Technical cases
- Game title, edition and installed version.
- Platform and, for PC, operating-system version and relevant hardware or controller model.
- Exact error text, including punctuation or a screenshot of the dialog.
- Date and time of each failure, with time zone if the issue involves online services.
- Numbered steps that reproduce the problem and what you expected to happen.
- Whether the problem occurs every time, only in one save, or only in multiplayer.
- Short video or screenshots that show the behavior without exposing private account data.
Ownership, account and entitlement cases
- Store where the game or downloadable content was purchased.
- Receipt or order number, with payment details redacted except for the information the form requests.
- Platform username or account ID and the linked publisher-account ID or email address.
- Former studio or publisher name and the current operator, if known.
- Previous support case number, dates and the resolution already offered.
- A precise list of missing content: base game, expansion, cosmetic item, points, reward or saved progress.
Describe the account relationship rather than guessing at the remedy. For example: “The platform account is still X, the publisher account is Y, and the entitlement disappeared after the publisher change.” This lets the support team investigate a record instead of treating the issue as a new purchase request.
When the old publisher website no longer works
Do not assume that a dead domain means the game has no support. The title may have moved to a new publisher, a parent company’s help center or a platform-managed service.
- Check the current storefront description, update notes and the game’s in-client support button.
- Search the platform Library support path rather than the former company name alone.
- Look for a current operator named in recent launcher notices, server messages or official store metadata.
- Open the operator’s private support form and state the former operator, acquisition or closure, and the date you last received support.
- Attach the old case number or a copy of earlier correspondence if the original mailbox still exists.
- If no operator can be verified, ask the platform whether it can confirm who handles the title’s technical support; do not submit credentials to an unverified form.
A platform can confirm a transaction or account login without being able to repair the game’s code, restore a publisher-side save or alter a third-party account. Ask each team for the specific record it controls.
Account recovery and ownership require private support
Use the publisher’s account form when the issue concerns a linked account, ownership, missing entitlement, progress, an account merge or a change of email address. Public replies cannot safely validate identity or inspect account history.

What to say when the company changed
Open with a compact timeline: the original studio or publisher, the current operator, the platform and purchase date, the account that was originally linked, and the event that caused the loss. Include any old and new case numbers. Explain whether you can still sign in to each account; do not create a second account merely to bypass the problem unless support instructs you to do so.
Examples of official account routes
Ubisoft directs users to its online contact form for account and other questions. EA directs users with account recovery, linking or entitlement problems to its EA Help account-support hub. These forms are the appropriate place to provide purchase evidence and account identifiers.
Understand what can and cannot be transferred
An acquisition or publishing change does not automatically move a license, save, reward balance or account history. Transferability depends on the platform account, publisher account and the title’s technical design.

Ubisoft states: “All Ubisoft games and in-game content are linked to the platform and Ubisoft account they are activated on. Please note that it is not possible to transfer games to another platform or Ubisoft account.” A new email address or a new Ubisoft account therefore does not, by itself, create a transferable copy of the game or its content.

EA relinking and progress
EA warns that unlinking a platform account and connecting it to another EA Account does not transfer game progress. Entitlements such as rewards, points and items remain on the EA Account to which the platform was first linked. If you need an account merge or related exception reviewed, contact EA support before changing the link again.
Questions to ask before requesting a move
- Is the request for a platform license, a publisher account, a cloud save or an in-game entitlement?
- Which account was first linked, and can that link be restored without creating a new one?
- Does the platform support the same edition and region?
- Will unlinking erase progress, rewards, points or items?
- Can support document the limitation in the case before you make an irreversible change?
Ask for confirmation in writing before deleting an account, unlinking a platform or accepting a replacement entitlement. A support agent may be able to restore access without being able to transfer the underlying license.

Steam authentication or purchase failure
Use Steam Support when the Steam client cannot authenticate, a retail key will not register with Steam, a purchase is missing from the Steam account or a Steam dialog prevents the game from starting. Include the Steam account username, order information and the exact dialog text.

Game failure after launch
Use the developer or publisher form when the game reaches its menu or loads a session and then crashes, displays a bug, loses controller input, fails to matchmake or reports a third-party DRM problem. Include reproduction steps rather than only saying that the game “does not work.”

Console account or store problem
Use the console maker for console sign-in, store payment, platform entitlement and account security. Use the game operator for the title’s servers, saves, gameplay behavior and publisher-account link. If both systems fail, open the platform case first and give its number to the game operator.
After submitting: preserve the trail
- Record the case number, submission date, portal used and the account email associated with the ticket.
- Reply in the same case thread instead of opening duplicates for the same incident.
- Answer verification questions without sending passwords or one-time codes.
- When an agent proposes unlinking or relinking, ask which progress and entitlements will remain attached to the original account.
- If the company redirects you, copy the redirecting team’s exact explanation and provide it to the next team.
- Escalate once with a concise timeline if the first-line response does not address the ownership or transfer question.
Keep the original receipts and screenshots even after a case is closed. A later operator may need them to reconstruct an entitlement history that was created under the former company.
A practical decision checklist
- Can you sign in to the platform? If not, start with platform support.
- Is the purchase or key missing from the platform account? Start with the platform store team.
- Does the game load before failing? Start with the current developer or publisher.
- Is a publisher account, save, reward or item missing? Use the publisher’s private account form.
- Did the studio close or change owners? Identify the operator through the current storefront and Library support link, then mention both old and new names.
- Are you considering an unlink or account merge? Ask support about progress and entitlement consequences first.
The safest sequence is to identify the current operator, send one evidence-rich ticket to the team that controls the failed system, and avoid account changes until support confirms their effect.
