Compare subscribers gained from Live and Videos in YouTube Studio over the same date range, then account for how long each format was available. Start with subscriber gains; use views, watch time, discovery, and live audience measures to explain the difference—not to substitute for subscriber growth.
Compare subscribers gained by content type
- In YouTube Studio, open channel-level Analytics and find the Subscribers report. Compare subscribers gained from Live with subscribers gained from Videos for the same date range. YouTube says the report includes subscribers gained from videos and live streams and helps identify what content converts viewers into subscribers. See YouTube Help: Understand your YouTube content performance.
- If you publish other formats, filter or segment the report so gains from Shorts or other content are not attributed to the live stream or uploads being compared. For a more detailed comparison or export, use Advanced Mode where available; Studio features and layouts can vary during interface rollouts. See YouTube Help: Use Advanced Mode analytics.
- Record the absolute subscriber gains for each format. Do not infer that the stream caused every channel subscription during the period: use the content-type attribution shown in Analytics, and keep other publishing and promotional activity in mind.
Make the observation window fair
A continuous stream can be available for many more hours than an individual upload. Raw subscriber totals describe the outcome over the chosen period, but do not by themselves show how efficiently each format converted its exposure.
Choose one shared date range
Set one date range for both Live and Videos. If you want to compare individual uploads, compare each over the same period after publication where practical—for example, the first seven days after each upload. State the exact window in your notes or report. A channel-level period and an upload’s post-publication period answer different questions, so do not silently mix them.
Show totals and a clearly defined rate
For the stream, report subscribers gained and, if useful, subscribers per stream-day: subscribers gained divided by the number of days it was live in the selected window. You can instead use a per-24-hours-live rate, provided you define it. For uploads, report subscribers gained per upload over the chosen post-publication window. These are descriptive calculations, not YouTube benchmarks or perfectly equivalent exposure measures; explain the denominator and keep the absolute totals visible.

Add context to explain the result
Once the subscriber outcome is clear, use other Analytics measures to investigate why it differed. YouTube Analytics provides views, watch time, average view duration, traffic sources, and live-specific measures such as stream duration and concurrent viewers. You can view live, on-demand, or combined reporting. See YouTube Help: Check your live stream data.
- Views and watch time: Show how much viewing each format received, but neither metric is a subscriber count.
- Average view duration and retention: Help assess whether viewers stayed with the content. Interpret them alongside format and viewing context rather than treating a longer session as automatic evidence of subscriber conversion.
- Traffic sources and impressions: Help explain how people discovered the content. Where impressions are available for the format, include them as discovery context, not as a replacement for subscribers gained.
- Average and peak concurrent viewers: Describe simultaneous live audience size. Concurrency is not a count of unique viewers and does not measure subscriber conversion.
- Stream duration: Makes the live stream’s availability visible in the comparison and supplies the denominator for a stream-day rate.
Use processed Analytics, not a real-time snapshot
Live Control Room real-time figures and YouTube Analytics can differ because Analytics is processed and despammed and may measure different information. For a post-stream comparison, use processed Analytics on both sides rather than pairing a live real-time counter with a finalized upload report. YouTube’s described post-stream workflow requires the stream to have ended at least 24 hours earlier; see YouTube Help: Check your live stream data.

Account for YouTube’s view-counting change
YouTube Help says that beginning August 24, 2026, views count when playback starts across Shorts, long-form videos (VOD), and live streams. The same page distinguishes this view-counting change from monetization and eligibility: YPP earnings remain based on engaged Shorts views and engaged watch hours, while eligibility uses qualified Shorts views and qualified watch hours. This change concerns views; it does not by itself change subscriber attribution. Preserve the effective date when comparing periods that cross it. See YouTube Help: How views are counted.
Keep the conclusion proportional to the data
There is no basis for declaring that 24/7 streams or regular uploads inherently grow a channel faster. Results depend on the channel, content, audience, time period, and promotion. A defensible conclusion says which format gained more subscribers in the stated window, gives the chosen rate and denominator, and uses exposure and audience-response measures to offer context without claiming causation.
