India’s largest medal haul and its highest finish in the Asian Games are different records. In the completed-edition figures through Hangzhou 2023, India’s record total is 107 medals, while its best medal-table rank is second, achieved at New Delhi 1951. Compare gold, silver, bronze, total medals and final rank as separate measures.
How to make a fair edition-to-edition comparison
- Use completed editions. Record the year and host, and do not mix live or provisional results into a series of final totals.
- Keep the medal colors separate. List gold, silver and bronze, then calculate total medals as their sum.
- Record final rank as its own measure. A larger medal total does not guarantee a higher rank; rank and total answer different questions.
- Check the official edition table. Secondary summaries can contain transcription errors, and medal allocations may change after appeals or disqualifications.
The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) notes that India’s 2018 mixed 4×400m relay silver was upgraded to gold in 2020 after a competitor was disqualified. Historical figures should therefore be treated as the final values reported by the relevant edition table, which may reflect later revisions.
India’s Asian Games medals by completed edition
The table covers the editions represented in the cited sources through Hangzhou 2023. Totals equal gold plus silver plus bronze; ranks are final positions. OCA’s official Incheon 2014 table is used for that edition.

What counts as India’s “best” performance?
Best by total medals: Hangzhou 2023
India won 107 medals at Hangzhou 2023—28 gold, 38 silver and 41 bronze—and finished fourth. The OCA identifies the campaign as India’s most successful Asian Games by medal total. The earlier high totals were 70 at Jakarta–Palembang 2018 and 65 at Guangzhou 2010.
Best by medal-table rank: New Delhi 1951
India finished second at the inaugural Asian Games, with 15 gold, 16 silver and 20 bronze for 51 medals. The Press Information Bureau’s 2023 historical account also records that result. A higher rank in 1951 than in 2023 does not mean a larger haul: the raw totals show otherwise.

Why rank and total can diverge
Beijing 1990 illustrates the distinction: India won 23 medals and ranked 11th, while Hiroshima 1994 also had 23 medals but India ranked eighth. A total counts India’s medals; rank reflects its position relative to other delegations in that edition’s table. Neither figure alone describes performance in relation to the number of medal events, participating national Olympic committees (NOCs), or India’s event entries; the cited sources do not provide a consistent denominator across editions for that kind of rate-adjusted comparison.

Check the edition and source before quoting a number
- Prefer the OCA edition table for its final count. A recent secondary retrospective lists 36 bronze for India at Incheon 2014, but the OCA table lists 37 bronze and 57 medals total; this comparison uses the OCA figure.
- Do not combine an older all-time sum with newer edition results without verification. The PIB’s 2023 account says India had won 672 Asian Games medals since 1951, but that figure predates Hangzhou 2023. It is not a current all-edition total, and simply adding Hangzhou’s 107 to it is not advised without checking the underlying historical records for revisions.
- Keep any 2026 results outside the completed-edition series until final confirmation. Aichi–Nagoya’s scheduled final date is October 4, 2026. If reporting results on that date before an official final table confirms completion, label them live and state the exact time they were checked.
The Olympic Council of Asia was established under the name Asian Games Federation; the PIB account says it was renamed the OCA in 1981. That governance change is useful historical context, but the cited sources do not establish that it changed the meaning of the medal categories.
