The cheapest published token rate is not necessarily the cheapest way to finish your work. Compare models by the cost of producing the same acceptable result: measure actual input, cached input, output and reasoning usage; add tools and other modalities; include cache writes, retries and service modifiers; then weigh the bill against quality, latency and reliability. A model with a low per-million-token price can use more tokens, require more attempts or miss your quality threshold, making each successful completion more expensive.
Why is the API price alone a poor comparison?
Provider price sheets describe units, not completed jobs. They commonly list separate rates for input tokens, output tokens, cached input, cache creation, batch processing, service tiers, tools and modalities such as images or audio. Your application pays for the units it actually consumes, not for the short answer a user sees.
Token rates cover different kinds of usage
An apparently simple “per million tokens” figure may apply only to standard uncached input. Output can have a different rate, while cached input, cache writes, long-context tiers, regional processing and expedited service can all change the amount charged. OpenAI documentation also presents separate rates for some tools and modalities. Anthropic’s live pricing documentation lists model token rates, prompt-cache writes and cache hits, and batch processing.

Suppose one model answers in 800 visible output tokens but another uses 2,000 output or internal reasoning tokens to reach the same result. If the second model’s extra usage is billed at its output rate, its completion may cost more despite a lower input rate. OpenAI’s Help Center puts the principle plainly: “A lower price per million tokens does not necessarily produce a lower total cost.”

Quality and retries are economic variables
A response that fails your application’s acceptance test is not a completed task. Count the first attempt, any repair prompt, tool call and retry needed to obtain an answer that meets the requirement. A model that succeeds less often can have a higher cost per acceptable completion even when its nominal rates look attractive.
| Cost component | What to record | Why it changes the comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Uncached input | Tokens sent at the standard input rate | Long instructions, retrieved documents and conversation history can dominate the bill. |
| Cached input | Tokens served from a prompt cache and the applicable hit rate | Repeated context may be cheaper, but only after accounting for cache creation and lifetime. |
| Cache writes | Tokens written, write multiplier and expiration period | A cache can cost more than it saves when it is read too few times. |
| Output and reasoning | Visible output plus any billable internal reasoning usage | A concise displayed answer can conceal substantial billable generation. |
| Tools and modalities | Tool calls, image/audio/file units and their separate rates | One successful response may include charges outside token pricing. |
| Failures and retries | Usage and outcome for every attempt | Reliability changes the cost of reaching an acceptable result. |
What exactly should be measured for each model?
Use the same workload definition for every candidate. A fair comparison keeps the prompt, context, tools, output format and acceptance test constant while allowing each model to use its normal tokenizer and reasoning behavior.
Define the task and acceptance bar
- State the user goal, required facts, safety constraints and output format.
- Define what makes a response acceptable: factual checks, schema validation, code tests, human review or a combination.
- Set a maximum latency and a retry policy before running the comparison.
- Specify whether tool use, retrieval, images, files or structured outputs are part of the normal workflow.
Use a representative sample
One demonstration prompt is not a benchmark. Assemble a sample that reflects your traffic, including routine cases, long-context cases, ambiguous requests and the difficult cases that cause failures in production. Keep a record of the prompt version and model version so a later price or model change does not silently invalidate the result.
Capture provider-reported usage
Do not estimate usage from character count or visible word count. Record the usage object returned by each API call, including input, cached input, output and reasoning fields when provided. Also record tool and modality usage, status, latency, timeout, validation result and whether another call was required.
How do I calculate the cost of one acceptable completion?
Apply the provider’s current rates to the measured units, then divide total spend by the number of tasks that passed your acceptance test. Keep each token category separate until the final sum.
task cost = uncached input units × input rate + cached input units × cached-input rate + output/reasoning units × output rate + cache writes + separately billed tools/modalities
This is a workload formula, not a universal price. Use the same unit convention as the price sheet, usually dollars per million tokens, and convert every usage count consistently. OpenAI’s token-based Enterprise rate card describes the equivalent sum of input, cached-input and output charges for eligible Enterprise agreements; that agreement-specific formula should not be presented as the price for every account.

Calculate the denominator correctly
If 1,000 requests produce 930 acceptable results, report total measured spend divided by 930, not by 1,000. Report the raw request cost as a secondary figure so readers can see the effect of failures and retries. If a single user task can involve several API calls, group those calls into one task before calculating the denominator.
Keep an auditable worksheet
| Field | Example entry |
|---|---|
| Model and version | Exact model identifier used in the run |
| Pricing snapshot | Date, currency and provider page checked |
| Input units | Uncached tokens per task and total |
| Cached units | Hit tokens, write tokens and cache lifetime |
| Output units | Visible output and reported reasoning usage |
| Extras | Tools, images, audio, files or other metered features |
| Outcome | Pass, fail, retry count and latency |
| Effective cost | Total spend ÷ acceptable completions |
What is a practical, step-by-step comparison method?
- Freeze the workload definition. Write the task prompt, context sources, tool configuration, output limits, acceptance tests and retry rules. Do not change them between models.
- Build a representative test set. Include ordinary traffic and edge cases in proportions that resemble actual use. Preserve a fixed evaluation subset for later regression checks.
- Run every model under the intended operating mode. If production will use batch, caching, a faster tier or regional processing, test that mode rather than standard on-demand calls. Record the model identifier and context range.
- Collect actual usage. Save input, cached-input, output and reasoning counts from the response metadata. Add tool or modality units, status codes, latency and retry information.
- Apply the current rate card. Use the right currency, region, service tier, cache modifier, batch rule and contract scope. Keep one-time cache writes separate from cache hits.
- Score acceptance and reliability. Mark each task as acceptable or not according to the predeclared test. Count retries and the time to a passing result.
- Report a cost-quality view. Show cost per acceptable task beside pass rate, latency and failure or retry rate. If one model is cheaper but slower or less accurate, present the trade-off instead of naming a universal winner.
- Recheck before making a decision. Prices, model availability and terms change. Repeat the price and availability check when the workload, region, contract or provider changes.
How do cached tokens and cache writes change the bill?
Caching helps when the same prompt prefix or context is reused often enough to recover the cost of writing it. Compare the write price, hit price, cache lifetime and number of reads; do not assume that a “cached” label automatically means a lower total cost.
Separate the write from every hit
Measure the tokens written to the cache and the tokens later served as hits. A cache write can have a multiplier over standard input, while a hit has its own rate. Include expiration: a five-minute cache and a one-hour cache have different reuse patterns and economics.
Use documented break-even logic carefully
Anthropic states that, under the multipliers documented on its pricing page, a five-minute cache pays off after one read and a one-hour cache after two reads. Those are break-even examples for the listed conditions, not a guarantee for every model or prompt. Model-specific exceptions and stacked modifiers can change the result.
Check whether modifiers stack
Anthropic notes that caching modifiers can stack with batch and data-residency pricing. Calculate the combined rate that applies to your account and region rather than adding a generic cache discount to a generic batch discount. If the provider does not state how two modifiers interact, ask for the applicable contract interpretation or measure the billed result.
When does batch processing lower the total cost?
Batch is useful for work that can finish asynchronously and tolerate the provider’s batch schedule. It is not a discount you can apply to an interactive request simply because the same model is available in a batch product.
Anthropic documents a 50% discount on input and output tokens for Batch API usage under the conditions on its pricing page. OpenAI presents Batch as a distinct pricing tier. Verify that the exact model, endpoint, output features and account qualify, and include any additional operational delay in the decision.

Compare batch with the value of immediacy
- Use batch for offline classification, indexing, evaluation runs, report generation and other queues without a strict response deadline.
- Use standard or faster service for interactive experiences where waiting for a batch window costs conversions, staff time or user trust.
- Measure completion time and failure handling; a lower token charge can be offset if delayed jobs require monitoring or a second run.
How do region, service tier and contract scope affect the number?
Every comparison should carry scope labels with the price. Record the date checked, currency, model and version, context range, standard versus batch or faster tier, geographic processing scope and whether the number is a public list price or a negotiated contract rate.
| Scope label | Question to answer | Risk if omitted |
|---|---|---|
| Date | When was the rate verified? | A later reader may treat a changed price as permanent. |
| Currency and unit | USD or another currency; per token or per million tokens? | Unit conversion can create a thousand-fold error. |
| Model/version | Which exact identifier and context range? | Two similarly named models may have different rates. |
| Processing geography | Global, US-only or another regional route? | Regional rows can carry different prices or eligibility. |
| Service tier | Standard, batch, priority or faster processing? | A tier surcharge or discount may be mistaken for the base rate. |
| Contract | Public list price, volume commitment or Enterprise agreement? | A negotiated figure cannot be generalized to ordinary accounts. |
Anthropic’s list-price schedule effective May 27, 2026, is denominated in US dollars per one million tokens unless otherwise noted and distinguishes global from US-only inference rows. Treat that schedule as a dated list-price reference, not a promise of an individual customer’s negotiated rate. OpenAI’s documentation notes regional-processing and FedRAMP uplifts for eligible models and changes by service tier, so those conditions belong in the worksheet.
Why are token counts different from word counts?
Tokenization varies by model, encoding and language. Punctuation, whitespace, code, markup, tool definitions, images and files can all alter the full input count. A prompt that looks the same length in a text editor may consume a different number of tokens on another model.
Count with the target model
Use the target model’s tokenizer or request-counting facility where available, then compare the count with the usage returned after the call. Count the complete request structure, including system instructions, conversation history, tool schemas and retrieved content—not only the user’s latest message.
Include reasoning usage
Reasoning models may report internal reasoning tokens as output usage even though those tokens are not shown to the user. A short visible answer can therefore have a substantially larger billable output. Set output and reasoning budgets deliberately, and store the returned usage fields so a model update cannot hide a change in consumption.

Cost is only useful when tied to the result your application needs. Publish a small scorecard rather than a single “cheapest” label.
- Acceptance rate: the share of tasks that meet factual, structural or functional checks on the first attempt.
- Cost per acceptable task: total billed usage, including retries, divided by passing tasks.
- Latency: median and high-percentile time to the first response and to an accepted result.
- Reliability: timeouts, provider errors, malformed outputs and retry frequency.
- Usage mix: input, cached input, output/reasoning and non-token units per accepted task.
- Operating scope: region, tier, batch eligibility and contract assumptions.
The official pricing pages establish billing mechanics, not a cross-provider ranking for your application. Quality, latency and retry behavior must be measured on your representative workload. If stakeholders value speed, accuracy and cost differently, show the alternatives and the consequence of each choice.

What common mistakes make model comparisons misleading?
Comparing list rates without usage
Problem: selecting a model from the lowest input price alone.
Fix: multiply the measured input, cached input, output/reasoning and extra-unit counts by their applicable rates.
Counting words instead of tokens
Problem: budgeting from a word-count estimate that excludes tools, files or system messages.
Fix: use the target tokenizer or counting endpoint and validate the estimate against returned usage.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Ignoring retries
Problem: dividing spend by requests sent even when many responses fail validation.
Fix: group all attempts belonging to one user task and divide by accepted results.
Treating caching as an automatic discount
Problem: applying the hit rate while omitting cache writes or expiry.
Fix: model write tokens, hit tokens, read frequency and cache lifetime separately.
Applying a batch discount to interactive traffic
Problem: quoting the batch rate for calls that require immediate responses.
Fix: verify endpoint and model eligibility and include the value of the required response time.
Mixing regions and contracts
Problem: comparing a US-only row, a global row and an Enterprise rate as if they were interchangeable.
Fix: label geography, date, tier and contract scope in every table cell.

How can a team present the final comparison?
Publish a table that allows another person to reproduce the calculation. Include the exact model identifier, price snapshot date, currency, region, service tier, cache and batch assumptions, measured usage per task, acceptance definition, sample size, pass rate, latency and retry policy.
Show at least two cost views: raw cost per API request and effective cost per acceptable completed task. The second is the decision metric; the first helps readers understand where the difference comes from. Keep a separate note for prices that are promotional, dated, contract-specific or limited to an eligible service.
When the results are close, report a range or sensitivity analysis. Recalculate the outcome if input length doubles, cache reuse falls, output limits rise or the retry rate changes. This reveals whether a choice is robust or depends on one fragile assumption.
Recommended Free Tools
How often should the comparison be refreshed?
Refresh the price and availability snapshot immediately before publication and whenever a provider changes a model, context window, region, service tier or contract. Re-run the workload when prompts, tools, acceptance tests or traffic mix change. A valid comparison is a dated operating measurement, not a permanent ranking.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I compare models using the average cost or the worst case?
Use both. The average cost shows normal budget impact, while a high-percentile or worst-case view exposes long contexts, unusually large outputs and expensive retry patterns that can dominate capacity planning.
How should I handle a failed API call in the cost calculation?
Record whether the failed call consumed billable units, then apply the provider’s stated billing treatment for that endpoint. Keep failed-call spend visible instead of hiding it inside a success average, because failure behavior can differ by model and service tier.
Can I compare a text-only model with a multimodal model on token price?
Only if the task uses the same input modality and you include every metered image, audio or file unit. Otherwise report separate workloads; a token-only comparison omits part of the multimodal model’s bill.
What if two models have nearly identical effective costs?
Prefer the one that better meets your operational constraint, such as stricter latency, higher acceptance rate, simpler regional compliance or more predictable usage. Run a sensitivity check before deciding so a small change in prompt length or retry rate does not reverse the result.
How can I keep a price comparison reproducible for auditors or finance teams?
Archive the dated pricing pages or rate-card exports, model identifiers, raw usage records, prompt-set version, code that applies rates and the acceptance results. Store enough metadata to distinguish standard, cached, batch, regional and contract-specific charges.
