The best pinking shears are the ones that produce the zigzag edge you need, fit your dominant hand, and remain comfortable through the amount of cutting you actually do. They are edge-finishing tools, not substitutes for straight-blade dressmaker shears. Manufacturer documentation identifies useful options from Fiskars, KAI, and Gingher, but the available evidence does not include an independent head-to-head test, sharpness score, durability study, or universal winner.
What pinking shears do
Pinking shears have blades with repeated triangular teeth. Closing the blades cuts a zigzag or sawtooth edge rather than the straight line made by ordinary fabric scissors. The resulting profile can slow edge fraying and gives seams, appliqué pieces, and craft projects a deliberate decorative finish.
Fiskars describes its Softgrip Pinking Shears as cutting “a zig-zag edge to reduce fabric fraying and unraveling” in its 2026 Creating catalogue. SINGER says its Gingher pinking shears leave a zigzag pattern that helps prevent fraying and keeps projects looking crisp and clean on the Gingher product page. Those are manufacturers’ descriptions of intended benefits, not measurements proving that every fabric will stop fraying.
What the zigzag edge can and cannot do
- It is useful when an exposed woven edge needs a quick finish, when a seam allowance needs less bulk than a turned hem, or when a decorative edge is part of the design.
- It does not replace a straight cut for pattern pieces, long grainline cuts, trimming bands, or accurate seam allowances.
- It is not a guarantee against fraying. Loosely woven, heavily handled, or washed fabrics may still shed threads and may need a serged, bound, turned, or otherwise secured edge.
- The teeth remove more material than a straight blade. Test placement on a scrap before cutting a finished piece, especially when the seam allowance is narrow.
Decide whether you need pinking shears or another fabric shear
Start with the edge you want, not with a brand name. Fiskars’ US scissors collection separates tools by job: dressmaker shears for long fabric cuts, thread snips for loose ends, and elevated tabletop shears intended to reduce fabric lift. Pinking shears occupy a different role in that system: they finish an edge with a zigzag.

| Task | More suitable tool | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Cut a pattern piece on a straight outline | Dressmaker or general fabric shears | A straight blade follows a line accurately without sacrificing material to teeth. |
| Reduce exposed woven-edge unraveling | Pinking shears | The zigzag edge is designed for this finishing purpose. |
| Trim a loose thread after stitching | Thread snips | Small pointed blades give better control near stitches. |
| Make long cuts while keeping fabric on a table | Long-blade or tabletop fabric shears | The geometry is intended for continuous cutting and, in some designs, less fabric lift. |
| Create a decorative sawtooth border | Pinking shears | The repeated teeth provide the finished shape directly. |
Most sewing rooms therefore need both straight fabric shears and pinking shears. Buying pinking shears as your only pair makes accurate cutting harder, while using straight shears for a zigzag finish cannot produce the same edge.
Features that matter when comparing pairs
Blade construction and finish
Construction details help you understand what a maker is offering, but they are not a substitute for comparative testing. Fiskars lists high-grade, precision-ground stainless-steel blades for Softgrip Pinking Shears, article 1070024, in the 2026 catalogue. SINGER describes Gingher blades as hand-finished forged steel with a double-plated chrome-over-nickel finish. Neither source supplies a controlled sharpness comparison, edge-retention interval, or durability ranking.
Look for a clearly identified blade material and finish, a model number, and a return policy. Avoid assuming that a particular steel label automatically means one pair cuts better than another; tooth geometry, alignment, maintenance, and the fabric being cut all affect the result.

Handle shape and cutting effort
Fiskars lists a contoured Softgrip handle on its Softgrip model. The company also describes spring-assisted opening on EasyAction lines. These features may be relevant if you cut repeatedly, have limited hand strength, or dislike a rigid grip, but the cited material does not measure fatigue, force, or strain reduction.
When possible, hold the closed scissors and check whether your fingers sit fully inside the rings without pressure points. A comfortable handle is more valuable than a feature you cannot use naturally. If you shop online, read the exact handle description for the specific model rather than assuming every pair in a product family has the same mechanism.
Length and hand fit
Longer shears can cover more edge per squeeze, while shorter shears can feel easier to control around curves and small pieces. The named KAI model is identified as 9 inches; the Gingher model is identified as 7-1/2 inches. Fiskars’ catalogue dimensions for article 1070024 are packaging measurements, so they should not be presented as blade length or usable cutting length.

Compare the stated overall length with the size of your hand and the work surface you use. A nominal length alone does not tell you how much of the blade is toothed, how wide the handle openings are, or how much fabric each squeeze advances.

Confirm that the exact listing is made for your dominant hand. Fiskars says its left-handed scissors use reversed blades and handles designed for left-handed users on its US scissors collection. The cited Softgrip pinking-shear entry does not establish that a left-handed version exists, so do not infer one from the collection page.
A right-handed pair can obscure the cut line or feel awkward in a left hand because the blades and grip are oriented differently. If a listing does not state the hand orientation, ask the seller before ordering and retain the model number in your records.

Availability, seller, and identification
Stock and prices change. When accessed, SINGER’s Gingher listing displayed as sold out; that is a time-specific snapshot, not a permanent statement about availability. The KAI page for the N5350 returned a 503 error during the source review, so only its 9-inch model identification is established here. Verify the live product page, seller, return terms, exact model, hand orientation, and current stock before paying.

What each documented option tells you
Fiskars Softgrip Pinking Shears
Article 1070024 is the most fully specified example in the Fiskars 2026 catalogue. Its listed combination is precision-ground stainless steel, a contoured Softgrip handle, and a zigzag edge intended to reduce fraying and unraveling. Treat those as published specifications and intended use. The catalogue does not show how the pair performs against KAI or Gingher, how long the edge stays sharp, or how much force the handle requires.

Before ordering, match the article number to the live listing and confirm that the dimensions shown are not being mistaken for blade length. If you are left-handed, look for explicit left-hand labeling rather than assuming the Softgrip model is reversible.
KAI N5350
KAI’s result identifies the N5350 as 9-inch Pinking Shears. That is enough to include it in a size-based search, but not enough to claim a particular steel, handle, tooth pitch, warranty, or availability. Open the official listing or contact an authorized seller before relying on any additional specification.
Gingher 7-1/2in Pinking Shears
The SINGER page gives a more detailed construction description: hand-finished forged steel with a double-plated chrome-over-nickel finish and sawtooth blades that leave a zigzag pattern. Those details can help you compare materials and finish, but they do not establish that the Gingher pair is sharper or more durable than another model. Check the page’s current stock indicator because it showed sold out at the time of access.
A step-by-step buying process
- Define the edge. Write down whether you need fray-conscious finishing, a decorative border, or both. If your main job is straight pattern cutting, keep a proper straight fabric shear as the primary purchase.
- Measure your use. Occasional craft projects may not justify a spring-assisted or highly contoured handle. Frequent quilting, garment sewing, or repeated seam finishing makes grip shape and hand fatigue more important.
- Set a size preference. Use the documented 7-1/2-inch Gingher and 9-inch KAI examples as reference points, then compare the exact overall length and tooth geometry listed for the pair you are considering.
- Check the dominant hand. Confirm right- or left-handed orientation in the model description. Do not rely on a store filter alone; verify the manufacturer’s wording and model number.
- Read the blade specification. Record whether the listing identifies stainless steel, forged steel, plating, or another construction. Treat this as a specification, not proof of superior cutting.
- Verify the complete listing. Confirm exact model, seller, current price, stock status, returns, and included accessories. A search result or old catalogue can describe a model without proving that it is currently sold.
- Compare like with like. If one listing gives packaging dimensions and another gives overall length, do not place those numbers in a ranking. Label what each measurement actually represents.
- Plan a backup edge finish. For fabrics that continue to unravel, decide whether you will overcast, serge, bind, turn, or otherwise secure the edge. Pinking is one finishing method, not a universal solution.
How to use pinking shears accurately
- Prepare the fabric. Press the piece flat and place it on a stable cutting surface. Align the edge you intend to finish so the teeth will remove only the planned amount.
- Test a scrap. Make several cuts in the same fabric, then flex and handle the edge. This reveals whether the zigzag is deep enough for the look you want and whether the material still sheds threads.
- Mark the cutting line. For a seam allowance or applique outline, mark the final boundary before cutting. Remember that the teeth create a repeating pattern and remove more fabric than a straight blade.
- Keep the blades moving forward. Open the handles fully, place the fabric deep enough between the teeth, close in a controlled squeeze, then advance without twisting. Overlapping partial bites can create an uneven pattern.
- Check corners and curves. Slow down at changes of direction. On tight curves, shorter controlled advances generally make it easier to keep the edge consistent than trying to force a long continuous bite.
- Inspect the result. Look for missed sections, crushed fibers, or excessive fraying. If the edge needs stronger protection, add the appropriate sewn or bound finish rather than repeatedly cutting away more fabric.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Using pinking shears for every cut: Switch to straight fabric shears for pattern outlines, long seams, and grain-sensitive cuts; reserve the teeth for finishing or decoration.
- Assuming “pinking” means fray-proof: Test the actual fabric. The maker claims are about reducing or helping prevent fraying, not eliminating it in every weave.
- Ignoring hand orientation: If the cut line is hidden or the grip feels strained, stop and verify whether the pair is designed for your dominant hand.
- Comparing packaging measurements with blade length: Re-label the numbers before making a size decision. Fiskars’ catalogue measurements for article 1070024 are packaging dimensions.
- Buying from an unverified listing: Match the product name and model/article number, then check seller, returns, stock, and current price. This is especially important when a manufacturer page is temporarily unavailable or shows sold out.
- Expecting a decorative edge to fix a structural problem: Pinking can change the appearance and behavior of an edge, but it cannot replace a seam finish chosen for the fabric’s stress, washing, or unraveling tendency.
- Forcing dull or misaligned teeth: Stop cutting when the fabric is pulled, crushed, or skipped. Confirm the seller’s care and sharpening policy; do not assume a generic sharpener is suitable for a toothed blade.
Build pinking shears into a complete sewing toolkit
| Tool | Primary job | Why it complements pinking shears |
|---|---|---|
| Straight dressmaker shears | Long, accurate fabric cuts and pattern cutting | Preserves material and line accuracy where a zigzag is unwanted. |
| Pinking shears | Zigzag edge finishing and decorative borders | Provides the characteristic edge that straight shears cannot make. |
| Thread snips | Removing loose threads close to stitching | Offers precision without bringing large shears near the seam. |
| Tabletop or elevated shears | Cutting with the fabric supported on a surface | Fiskars identifies this category as intended to reduce fabric lift in some designs. |
| Rotary cutter or other specialized cutter | Repeated straight cuts with a ruler or template | Can speed accurately guided cuts while leaving pinking shears for edge treatment. |
How to make a responsible choice when evidence is limited
A product page can establish what a manufacturer says a tool is made from and intended to do. It cannot, by itself, establish which pair is sharpest, lasts longest, creates the least hand fatigue, or performs best on every fabric. No named, dated performance statistic or independent comparison is available for the models above.
Use a priority-based decision instead of a universal ranking. Choose the Fiskars example when its documented Softgrip handle and stainless-steel specification match your needs; investigate the KAI N5350 when a 9-inch format is your starting requirement; consider the Gingher model when its forged-steel and plated-blade description matters and live stock is confirmed; and verify the Prym 9-inch listing if you want another serrated option with current documentation. In every case, confirm the exact model and hand orientation before purchase.
Quick Recap
Quick decision guide
- You mainly need a zigzag finish: Buy pinking shears, but retain straight shears for all primary cutting.
- You cut for long sessions: Give handle contour, opening size, and any spring-assisted design more weight than a small difference in nominal length.
- You prefer a longer format: Start with documented 9-inch models, then verify usable blade details rather than relying on packaging dimensions.
- You are left-handed: Select an explicitly left-handed model; do not infer compatibility from a general collection page.
- You need a specific construction: Compare the listed stainless-steel or forged-steel and plating specifications, while treating them as descriptions rather than performance proof.
- The listing is sold out or unclear: Wait for a verified listing or contact the seller instead of substituting an unidentified model.
