The right e-reader app is the one that keeps the specific things you rely on—your reading position, bookmarks, highlights, typed notes, or handwriting—available on the devices you actually use. Before choosing, check what syncs, where it syncs, what settings or internet access it requires, and whether you can get annotations out of the app.

Start with how you read

If you read on only one device, annotation tools and library access may matter more than sync. If you switch between a phone, tablet, and dedicated e-reader, test whether the app synchronizes your place and the kinds of marks you make across those devices. Treat each data type separately: an app may sync reading position and typed highlights but handle handwritten notes or exported documents differently.

Also identify where your books come from. The examples below describe workflows documented by the providers; they do not establish compatibility with every ebook, file format, sideloaded title, or third-party device.

Compare the sync behavior, not just the word “sync”

App or ecosystem What the cited support page says can sync or be accessed Important boundary
Kobo Books Reading progress automatically syncs between a Kobo eReader and the Kobo Books app. Kobo’s Android instructions also say syncing updates ebooks with bookmarks and annotations made on another device. The Android sync instructions require an internet connection and a tap on the sync icon. They do not establish annotation behavior for every book or unrelated device. Kobo’s Android sync instructions and Kobo’s eReader/app progress guidance.
Amazon Kindle After syncing, text-based notes and highlights are accessible across Kindle surfaces; sync also downloads pending books and backs up the furthest page read. Handwritten annotations are currently accessible only across Kindle Scribe devices, according to Amazon. Do not assume handwriting will appear in every Kindle app or device. Amazon Kindle sync guidance.
Google Play Books Supports bookmarks, highlights, and notes. With “Save notes, highlights and bookmarks” enabled, annotations are saved to a Google Drive document for that book. This is an optional, setting-dependent Drive copy, not merely in-app sync. Publisher copy restrictions may keep highlighted text out of the document. Editing the synced document and then adding annotations can delete those edits; make a copy first if you need to preserve independent changes. Google Play Books instructions.
Apple Books Can sync reading position, bookmarks, notes, and highlights through iCloud across Apple devices. Users need the same Apple Account and must enable Books in iCloud; library and collection syncing have separate settings. Some books may need downloading on the receiving device, and Books is unavailable in some countries or regions. Apple’s Books sync guidance.

Check which annotations matter to you

  • Reading position: Confirm that your last page or location carries over when you change devices. A synced place does not by itself mean your marks sync too.
  • Bookmarks: Check whether the app can save multiple locations and whether those bookmarks are available on your other devices.
  • Highlights and typed notes: Look for both cross-device access and a convenient way to browse them, such as a notes or contents view.
  • Handwriting: If you annotate with a stylus, check supported hardware specifically. Kindle’s documented boundary is a useful reminder that text annotations and handwriting may follow different rules.
  • Export or backup: Decide whether annotations must remain inside the reader or be available elsewhere. Google Play Books offers a Drive document option, but its copy limits and editing behavior matter if you intend to use that document as an independent notebook.

Verify device coverage and setup

“Across devices” can mean within one provider’s ecosystem, not across every operating system. Apple’s cited instructions describe Apple devices and iCloud; Kobo’s cited progress workflow pairs a Kobo eReader with the Kobo Books app. Before committing, check the provider’s current help for your exact phone, tablet, e-reader, and app version.

  1. Confirm account and network requirements. Find out whether the app needs a provider account, the same account on each device, an internet connection, or a manual sync action.
  2. Check cloud and save settings. Look for separate switches for reading data, library/collection sync, or annotation saving. In Google Play Books, the annotation-to-Drive feature is called “Save notes, highlights and bookmarks.” Apple Books requires Books in iCloud to be enabled for its described sync.
  3. Test with a book you actually read. Add a bookmark, a highlight, and a short note on one device, then open the same book elsewhere and verify each item. For handwriting, test on the specific devices you expect to use.
  4. Check the route back out. If you need notes outside the app, confirm whether export or a cloud document is available and whether it preserves the text you highlighted. Keep a separate copy before editing a provider-synced document.

Choose by ecosystem and workflow

  • Choose Kobo Books as a candidate if you use a Kobo eReader alongside the Kobo Books app and want progress to carry between them. For Android annotation updates, expect to use the app’s internet-connected sync action.
  • Choose Kindle as a candidate if you read across Kindle surfaces and rely on text notes and highlights. If handwriting is essential, make Kindle Scribe support a deciding device check rather than assuming parity with text annotations.
  • Choose Google Play Books as a candidate if bookmarks, highlights, and notes are enough in the reader, with the option of a book-specific Google Drive document. Consider publisher copy limits and the document’s edit behavior before relying on it as your archive.
  • Choose Apple Books as a candidate if your reading devices are Apple devices and you are comfortable using the same Apple Account and iCloud settings for continuity.

These are ecosystem examples, not a universal ranking. The best fit depends on the books you need to open, the devices you own, and whether you need annotations merely to reappear in the reader or to be portable elsewhere.
