Choose an AI model by the work it must complete, not by a universal “best model” ranking. Start with the least expensive, fastest model that can meet your quality bar, then test it on representative coding, writing, or support tasks. Compare factual accuracy, edge-case handling, tool use, latency, context behavior, and input/output cost with identical prompts. Use a stronger reasoning model for complex code changes, ambiguous or policy-sensitive support, and high-stakes content; reserve lightweight models for routine, high-volume work. A small benchmark made from your own tasks will produce a more reliable choice than a generic leaderboard, and a routing system can combine models instead of forcing one model to handle every request.

What should you compare when choosing an AI model?

Compare the dimensions that affect your actual workflow: capability, latency, price, context capacity, tool integration, structured-output reliability, data controls, and behavior when a task must be escalated. A model that writes elegant prose may be a poor coding agent, while a fast support model may fail when a customer’s request spans several policies.

Decision axis What to measure Why it matters
Task capability Correctness, factuality, code quality, instruction following Prevents a low price from masking unusable answers
Edge-case reliability Ambiguous prompts, conflicting requirements, unusual inputs, refusal behavior Most production failures occur outside the happy path
Latency Time to first token and total response time under your load Interactive coding and support need different response speeds
Price Input and output tokens, plus tool or retrieval overhead Long prompts and verbose answers can dominate the bill
Context window Prompt, history, files, retrieved passages, and tool output that fit together Long coding sessions can silently lose earlier context
Tool and format support Function calls, JSON-schema adherence, code execution, connectors Reliable automation needs machine-readable responses
Data and deployment Retention, regional processing, access controls, and hosting options Security and compliance may eliminate otherwise capable models
Escalation behavior Confidence signals, handoff quality, and recovery after failure Lets a cheaper model handle routine work safely

Keep speed, price, and reasoning effort as separate controls. A model may offer a faster setting, a deeper reasoning setting, or both; test the settings independently instead of assuming that a larger model is always slower or always better.

Which AI model is best for coding?

For coding, the best model is the least expensive one that can make correct changes in your repository, use your tools, and pass your tests. Vendor positioning is a useful starting point, but your languages, framework, build system, and review standards should decide the winner.

Match model strength to the coding task

  • Focused edits and high-volume tasks: use a fast model for syntax fixes, small refactors, documentation, test generation, and well-specified bug reports.
  • Everyday feature work: use a mid-tier model that can inspect several files, reason about dependencies, and produce a patch you can review.
  • Long-running agentic work: use a stronger reasoning model when the agent must plan across a large repository, run tools repeatedly, diagnose failing tests, or recover from an incorrect intermediate change.
  • Safety-critical or difficult changes: require human review, reproducible tests, and a second check regardless of model size.

Current coding-oriented model positioning

OpenAI positions GPT-6 Astra for the most demanding reasoning and coding, GPT-6.1 Sol for complex work at lower cost, and GPT-6 Luna for focused, high-volume tasks. Anthropic maps Claude Opus 5.5 to long-running agentic coding, Claude Sonnet 5.5 to everyday coding and enterprise workloads, and Claude Haiku 5.5 to high-volume, latency-sensitive processing. These are vendor descriptions, not a guarantee for your codebase; validate them with your own repository and tool chain.

What to include in a coding trial

  1. Select real tasks covering a small bug, a multi-file feature, a refactor, a failing test diagnosis, and documentation or migration work. Remove secrets and personal data according to your policy.
  2. Give every candidate the same repository snapshot, system instructions, tool permissions, and test commands.
  3. Score the resulting patch for functional correctness, test success, regressions, style, security issues, and the amount of human rework required.
  4. Measure tool-call success and recovery: note whether the model notices a failed command, reads the error, and adjusts instead of repeating it.
  5. Run a long-context case with the files and history an engineer normally supplies. Record what the model forgets or summarizes as the session grows.

Do not judge a coding model only by whether it produces compilable code. A patch that passes a narrow test but violates authorization rules, data validation, or project conventions is a production failure.

What is the best AI model for writing?

For writing, prioritize instruction following, preservation of source facts, tone control, and revision quality. A model that produces fluent first drafts but changes names, numbers, or qualifications is unsuitable for technical, legal, financial, or customer-facing work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose for the type of writing

  • Fine-grained editing: a fast model is often sufficient for grammar, clarity, shortening, and style-consistent rewrites when the source text is supplied.
  • Drafting with constraints: use a model that reliably follows audience, format, terminology, and length requirements while retaining the supplied facts.
  • Complex synthesis: use stronger reasoning when the model must reconcile several documents, identify contradictions, or explain uncertainty.
  • High-volume summaries: use a lower-cost model with strict citation or extraction checks, and route exceptions for review.

How to test writing quality

Create paired tests: a source-preservation task with deliberately similar names and numbers, a tone conversion, a fact-dense summary, and a revision after editorial feedback. Score omitted facts, invented claims, unwanted tone changes, formatting errors, and how well the second draft addresses feedback. OpenAI guidance describes Luna as suited to fine-grained edits and scoped problem solving and Astra as suited to concise writing that preserves facts and nuance. Anthropic recommends measuring accuracy, response quality, and edge cases with actual prompts and data.

Keep a “must not change” list in the prompt for regulated or technical copy. Require the model to mark uncertainty rather than fill gaps, and have a person approve claims that affect safety, money, legal rights, or reputation.

Which model should you use for customer support?

Support is usually strongest as a routing problem: let a fast, inexpensive model resolve routine intents from approved knowledge, and escalate ambiguous, low-confidence, policy-sensitive, or multi-step cases to a stronger model or a human agent.

Separate routine from ambiguous intents

  • Routine: order-status questions, password instructions, known troubleshooting steps, and FAQ-style answers grounded in current documentation.
  • Ambiguous: messages with missing account details, several possible causes, unclear intent, or conflicting information.
  • Policy-sensitive: refunds outside standard rules, identity or payment issues, safety complaints, harassment, or requests that require an exception.
  • Multi-step: cases requiring several authenticated tool calls, cross-system checks, or a follow-up commitment.

How model options map to support workloads

Microsoft describes Copilot Studio Auto as suitable for mixed workloads that include helpdesk and tier-0 customer support. Its General option targets speed and cost for drafting, rewriting, summarizing, translation, FAQ-style grounded answers, and simple automation. Anthropic positions Haiku 5.5 for high-volume, latency-sensitive tasks. Treat these descriptions as starting points and test on your own tickets, policies, and integrations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Design a safe escalation path

  1. Classify the incoming message and attach the minimum customer and policy context needed to answer it.
  2. Send routine, well-grounded intents to the fast model with tools limited to the actions it is allowed to perform.
  3. Require a confidence or evidence check: the response must cite the retrieved policy section internally or indicate that required information is missing.
  4. Escalate low-confidence, contradictory, high-impact, or multi-step cases to a stronger model or a trained agent.
  5. Preserve the conversation, tool results, and reason for escalation so the next responder does not restart the investigation.

Measure containment and customer satisfaction together. A high automation rate is not a success if it increases transfers, repeat contacts, refunds, or incorrect commitments.

How much do leading models cost, and what context do they provide?

The following list records prices published for 2026. Prices are per 1 million tokens; input and output are billed separately, and Anthropic’s Haiku figure is stated as a starting price. Confirm the price at implementation because vendors can change rates, caching rules, or regional terms.

Vendor and model Input price / 1M tokens Output price / 1M tokens Context window Maximum output
OpenAI GPT-6 Astra $10 $50 1.05 million tokens 128K tokens
OpenAI GPT-6.1 Sol $2 $10 1.05 million tokens 128K tokens
OpenAI GPT-6 Luna $0.10 $0.50 1.05 million tokens 128K tokens
Anthropic Claude Fable 5.1 $10 $50 1 million tokens 128K tokens
Anthropic Claude Opus 5.5 $4 $20 1 million tokens 128K tokens
Anthropic Claude Sonnet 5.5 $2 $10 1 million tokens 128K tokens
Anthropic Claude Haiku 5.5 From $0.10 From $0.50 1 million tokens 128K tokens

For a rough request cost, multiply input tokens by the input rate and output tokens by the output rate, divide each by 1,000,000, and add the results. Include repeated system prompts, retrieved documents, conversation history, and tool output: they all consume context and may be billable input.

Why context limits matter

A context window includes the system prompt, custom instructions, conversation history, file contents, tool outputs, and the current message. When it fills, older material may be summarized or dropped, so a model can appear to “forget” a decision made earlier. Long coding and support workflows need explicit context management rather than an assumption that a large advertised window will remain fully usable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Keep a compact, current task summary outside the raw transcript.
  • Remove duplicate logs, stale files, and already-resolved messages.
  • Retrieve only the policy or code passages needed for the current step.
  • Persist important decisions, IDs, and test results in a structured state store.
  • Start a new conversation when the active context becomes noisy, carrying over the verified summary.

How do you balance quality, speed, and cost?

Use a quality floor and an escalation budget, not a single average score. First identify the minimum accuracy and safety level the task requires; then choose the fastest model that clears that floor on representative tests.

A practical selection sequence

  1. Define the outcome and failure cost. A typo in an internal draft is different from an incorrect payment instruction or a destructive code change.
  2. Choose two or more candidate models at different capability and price levels.
  3. Run the same prompts, files, tools, and output constraints on every candidate.
  4. Record correctness, factuality, style, edge-case handling, tool success, latency, and token usage.
  5. Calculate cost per successful task, not merely cost per request. Include human review and rework time where possible.
  6. Set an escalation rule, such as a failed validation, missing evidence, low confidence, or a policy trigger.
  7. Re-run the suite whenever models, prices, prompts, retrieval data, or tools change.

OpenAI advises treating its recommendations as a starting point, experimenting with models and reasoning settings, and keeping the lightest setting that meets the quality bar. Anthropic calls a use-case-specific benchmark the most important step and likewise recommends testing actual prompts and data before upgrading or switching models.

When a cheaper model wins

A lightweight model is the better choice when the task is tightly scoped, the answer can be validated automatically, the context is small, and failures are cheap to detect. Examples include classifying a support intent, extracting fields into a schema, applying a known copy edit, or generating boilerplate tests that a suite will verify.

When to pay for more reasoning

Pay for stronger reasoning when requirements conflict, evidence is incomplete, the model must plan several tool calls, or a wrong answer has material consequences. The extra price is justified only if it reduces failed tasks, escalation volume, or human correction enough to lower total cost.

How should you build a model benchmark?

A useful benchmark is small enough to run regularly and realistic enough to expose production failures. It should represent the distribution of tasks rather than showcase unusually easy prompts.

Build the test set

  1. Sample coding, writing, or support tasks from production, and remove sensitive information as required by your policy.
  2. Label the expected outcome, acceptable alternatives, prohibited behavior, and severity of failure.
  3. Include normal cases, ambiguous cases, adversarial wording, long-context cases, and cases that should be escalated.
  4. Freeze the prompt template, tools, retrieval corpus, model settings, and scoring rubric for each comparison.

Score and interpret results

  • Correctness: did the answer or action solve the task?
  • Factuality: are claims supported by the supplied source or approved knowledge?
  • Constraint adherence: did it follow format, tone, permissions, and policy?
  • Robustness: does a minor wording change produce a safe, consistent result?
  • Operations: what are latency, token usage, tool-call failures, and retry rates?
  • Human effort: how long does review, correction, or escalation take?

Keep separate scores for routine and difficult cases. An average can hide a model that is excellent on FAQs but unsafe on the small number of refund exceptions that matter most.

What common mistakes make model selection fail?

Most poor choices come from evaluating the wrong thing or ignoring operational constraints.

  • Picking a leaderboard winner: generic benchmark performance may not predict success in your language, repository, brand voice, or policy set.
  • Changing prompts between models: different instructions make the comparison invalid. Hold prompts and tools constant first; optimize later.
  • Ignoring output tokens: a low input rate can be outweighed by long answers, retries, or verbose tool traces.
  • Testing only first responses: production workflows include corrections, tool errors, follow-up questions, and context growth.
  • Sending everything to the strongest model: this raises cost and latency without improving routine tasks.
  • Routing only by topic: a “billing” message can be routine or highly sensitive. Include confidence, policy, and required actions in the routing decision.
  • Failing to define a stop condition: agents can loop on tools. Set maximum turns, time, spend, and escalation triggers.
  • Treating a large context window as memory: preserve critical state explicitly and test what remains available near the limit.

What is a practical default strategy?

Start with a two-tier design: a fast, low-cost model for validated routine work and a stronger model for exceptions. Use the same benchmark to decide which tasks belong in each tier, enforce tool and data permissions independently of the model, and monitor quality after launch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Default by workload

Workload Starting choice Escalate when
Focused coding edits, extraction, simple classification Fast, lower-cost model Validation fails, files conflict, or the task expands
Feature coding and ordinary revisions Mid-tier reasoning model Multi-file planning, repeated test failures, or security-sensitive logic appears
Long-running coding agents and complex synthesis Strong reasoning model Human review is required regardless of output
FAQ and routine support Fast model grounded in approved content Evidence is missing, confidence is low, or policy is unclear
Ambiguous, high-impact, or multi-step support Stronger model or trained agent Identity, safety, payment, or exception handling requires a person

This approach keeps model choice tied to measurable outcomes. Revisit the assignment when your prompts, tools, traffic mix, knowledge base, or vendor prices change.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many examples do I need before choosing a model?

There is no universal sample size. Begin with a balanced set that covers your highest-volume tasks and your most expensive failures, then add cases whenever production monitoring reveals a new failure mode. The set becomes more valuable through coverage and consistent labels than through sheer volume.

Should I use one provider for every workload?

Not necessarily. A single provider can simplify procurement, authentication, and monitoring, while multiple providers may improve resilience or give you a better fit for distinct workloads. Make the decision after comparing data policies, tool compatibility, operational overhead, and measured task performance.

How can I protect confidential data during model tests?

Redact secrets and direct identifiers, minimize the fields sent to the model, and use synthetic or masked records where they preserve the test’s meaning. Confirm retention, access, regional-processing, and contractual controls before using production data, and log which data classes each workflow transmits.
