Choose an AI model for code analysis or reverse engineering by testing it on representative, authorized tasks from your own workflow—not by treating a vendor’s model tier, benchmark, or token price as a universal ranking. Compare whether it reaches correct conclusions, supports them with code-level evidence, uses tools well, handles your repository and inputs, and completes the task at an acceptable total cost and latency. As of October 26, 2026, the available provider guidance does not establish a neutral winner for this workload.
What should you optimize for when choosing a model?
Optimize for reliable completed work, not the most impressive answer or the lowest advertised input-token rate. Code analysis can mean explaining a function, tracing data across files, locating a vulnerability, interpreting disassembly, or checking whether a proposed patch changes behavior. A model that succeeds at one of those tasks may not succeed at another.
Start by defining what a successful result means for the work you actually do. For a behavior explanation, that could mean a correct account of control flow grounded in the relevant source. For a security finding, it may require identifying the triggering conditions, affected code, and a reproducible way to validate the issue. For reverse engineering, it must work on the inputs you are permitted to analyze—such as source code, disassembly, or decompiler output—rather than merely perform well on ordinary source-code questions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse provider recommendations to shortlist candidates, not to settle the decision. Anthropic’s September 22, 2026 Claude Code guidance recommends Sonnet for most coding, Opus for harder reasoning, and Haiku for quick or high-volume work. That is Anthropic’s guidance about its own models, not a matched comparison with other providers or a guarantee for reverse-engineering tasks.

How do you compare models fairly?
Run the same representative tasks with each candidate under the conditions you expect to use in practice. Record correctness, evidence, tool use, completion time, and full cost for the completed task; a token rate alone does not show which model is the better fit.
1. Define the work and its boundaries
Write down the programming languages, repository size, target outputs, and data sensitivity involved. Specify whether the work is static analysis, dynamic analysis, or both, and whether the model may search files, run approved tests, use a debugger, or inspect an executable. Keep the evaluation within systems and materials you are authorized to analyze.
Also decide where the model will run: an IDE or command-line coding agent, a repository-connected security workflow, an API integration, or a local deployment. The interface and its tools affect what the system can accomplish. Comparing model names while one candidate can inspect the repository and another only sees a pasted excerpt is not a fair test.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →2. Build a small task set with known checks
Choose tasks that resemble real work and have answers that can be checked against tests, known behavior, or an expert reviewer. A useful set might include:
- Trace a function’s inputs and outputs across multiple files.
- Explain a data flow or behavior and point to the code that establishes it.
- Identify a behavior from source and distinguish confirmed facts from assumptions.
- Analyze a binary or decompiled output, if that work is permitted and part of your workload.
- Produce a code-level finding with evidence that a reviewer can inspect.
Do not infer binary-analysis ability from a source-code task. Score results on the actual kinds of inputs you expect to provide.
3. Keep the comparison conditions consistent
Give each candidate the same task, repository material, instructions, and available tools. Use equivalent permissions and comparable context. If a platform’s tool setup differs, note that separately: the result measures the model-plus-workflow combination, not model quality in isolation.

Repeat representative cases where practical. A single correct answer does not establish reliability; repeated attempts can reveal inconsistent reasoning, false positives, and unsupported conclusions.

4. Score evidence as well as the final answer
Check whether each conclusion is grounded in actual code or reproducible output. Look for specific file-level support, accurate cross-file relationships, appropriate uncertainty when evidence is missing, and a clear separation between observed behavior and inference. An explanation that sounds plausible but invents a call path is not a successful analysis.
Record useful tool calls and whether the model reports their results accurately. A model may reach a correct answer without tools on a small example but fail when a task requires repository search, tests, debugging, or analysis tools. Conversely, tool activity is not valuable by itself if it does not improve the result.
5. Include time and failed runs in the cost
Track completion time and total spend for successful work, including failed or abandoned attempts. Compare cost per completed task rather than only input or output price per million tokens. For repeated repository work, measure whether prompt caching actually reduces cost and latency in your workflow instead of assuming that repeated context will be cached.
Anthropic’s cost-optimization documentation reports internal measurements in which rerunning low-effort failures at high effort achieved about 40% lower cost than running every attempt at high effort at the same pass rate. That is a vendor-reported internal result, not an independent benchmark or a promise that the same routing strategy will save money for your tasks.
Which comparison criteria matter most?
Use a scorecard that reflects the risks and outputs of your work. These criteria are a practical evaluation framework, not a published cross-provider benchmark.

| Criterion | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Code comprehension | Correct control flow, data flow, API use, and relationships across files | A convincing summary can still miss a dependency or describe behavior the code does not implement. |
| Evidence quality | Claims tied to specific source locations or reproducible output; uncertainty stated when evidence is missing | Reviewers need to verify conclusions rather than trust unsupported explanations. |
| Reverse-engineering fit | Performance on the permitted input types you actually use, including disassembly or decompiler output where relevant | Results on source code do not establish performance on binaries. |
| Tool use | Effective search, file inspection, approved tests, debugging, or analysis tools—and accurate reporting of results | Repository work often depends on more than a model’s answer to a pasted snippet. |
| Reliability | Correctness across repeated representative cases, including false positives and unsupported conclusions | One good run may not predict how the system behaves on the next task. |
| Context handling | Whether relevant repository material remains available and salient during long sessions; context limits and compaction behavior | Large or extended investigations can lose important details or require repeated context. |
| Speed and cost | Latency and total spend for successful work, counting failed or abandoned runs | The lowest token price may not produce the lowest cost per completed task. |
| Governance | Data handling, deployment geography, account access, plan eligibility, and authorization for the work | A technically capable model is not a fit if its access or operating terms do not suit the project. |
| Workflow fit | IDE or CLI access, API integration, repository connection, sandboxing, review process, and human approval | Model capability alone does not provide repository access, safe execution, or review controls. |
How should you interpret current provider guidance?
Provider recommendations can help narrow the shortlist, but they describe vendor-specific options and are not independent evidence that one provider is better for your workload.
Anthropic: use tier guidance as a starting point
Anthropic’s Claude Code support article, dated September 22, 2026, calls Sonnet the right choice for the large majority of coding work, describing it as fast, capable, and cost-efficient. It positions Opus for deeper reasoning, such as large cross-cutting refactors, difficult debugging, and architectural decisions; Haiku is presented as the fastest and cheapest option for quick lookups, simple edits, and high-volume scripted work. Those recommendations may inform a first test, but your evaluation should determine whether each tier meets your quality bar.
The same support guidance says model names, versions, and availability can change, and that /model reflects availability for the signed-in account. Check what is available in the account and environment you intend to use rather than assuming that a model name or tier is accessible everywhere.

Google: a specialized defensive-cyber option has access limits
Google’s Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform documentation describes Gemini 4 Argon Cyber Permissive for defensive cybersecurity applications that include vulnerability discovery, reverse engineering, exploit verification, and patch generation. The documentation says access is allowlist-based; having access to an earlier cyber model does not automatically confer access to this variant. Treat it as a candidate only if your defensive use case, approval, region, and applicable terms fit.
OpenAI: distinguish model pricing from security workflow features
OpenAI’s API pricing page publishes model-specific input, output, and cached-input rates, with modifiers for some processing modes and regional endpoints. The page checked October 26, 2026 states a 10% uplift for specified regional-processing endpoints on eligible models released on or after March 5, 2026. Because the rate table and eligibility can change, check the chosen model and endpoint before estimating a project budget.
OpenAI describes Codex Security as a research preview that connects to GitHub repositories, builds a codebase-specific threat model, investigates vulnerabilities, tries to validate potential findings in an isolated environment, and proposes patches for human review. Access depends on eligible plans and workspace settings. This describes a defensive security workflow; it is not proof that a general-purpose model is the best option for reverse engineering.

How do you estimate the real cost of a coding or analysis task?
For API use, estimate input and output separately, then include retries, tool calls, repeated context, and any applicable caching or endpoint modifiers. The figures below are the Anthropic API prices shown on its pricing page as checked October 26, 2026, for prompts up to 100,000 tokens where specified; they are not a complete quote for every plan or platform.
| Model listed by Anthropic | Input per million tokens | Output per million tokens | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Opus 5.5 | $4 | $20 | API rates shown on the page checked October 26, 2026. |
| Claude Sonnet 5.5 | $2 | $10 | API rates shown on the page checked October 26, 2026. |
| Claude Haiku 5.5 | $0.10 | $0.50 | These rates apply to prompts up to 100,000 tokens; the page lists a higher rate above that threshold. |
The same Anthropic page lists Claude 4.6 and later, with stated exceptions, as having a 1 million-token context window at standard pricing. That statement is specific to the models and exceptions described on that page; do not assume every model, account, or service offers the same context limit.
To see why token price is only one input, consider a purely illustrative calculation using those listed rates: 100,000 input tokens and 20,000 output tokens would cost $0.80 at Opus 5.5 rates, $0.40 at Sonnet 5.5 rates, or $0.02 at Haiku 5.5 rates if the Haiku prompt meets the stated threshold. This arithmetic excludes retries, tools, caching effects, and other charges; it does not predict how many tokens a real analysis will use or whether a model will complete it successfully.
Long repository sessions accumulate conversation and project context, so measure a representative end-to-end task rather than extrapolating from one short prompt. OpenAI’s prompt-caching documentation says cache reuse depends on matching prompt prefixes and recommends monitoring cached-token usage, cache writes, latency, and realized cost. A repeated context does not guarantee a cache hit, and caching does not remove the need to include relevant context.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do you choose between a fast model and a stronger reasoning model?
Use a lower-cost or faster tier for routine work only when it meets the quality bar you set in your evaluation. Route harder cases to a stronger reasoning model when the additional cost is justified by better results on those cases, rather than sending every task to the most expensive tier by default.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →A practical routing policy can be based on task difficulty and review signals. For example, a routine lookup may stay with the faster tier if it cites the right code, while a cross-file analysis with uncertain behavior can be escalated if the first result lacks evidence or fails a test. Define those escalation conditions in advance and measure the resulting success rate and total cost. Anthropic’s tiering guidance and internal cost figures can suggest what to test, but they do not establish that a particular routing rule will work for another team.

Do not treat an escalation as verification. A second model can offer another analysis, but consequential conclusions still need to be checked against source, tests, reproducible output, or qualified human review.
How can you validate findings and handle untrusted code?
Use evaluation and verification tools to make model conclusions checkable, especially when the code is unfamiliar or the outcome affects security. The UK AI Security Institute’s Inspect project describes reusable datasets, agents, tools, and scorers for coding and agentic evaluations, along with sandboxing options for untrusted model code. It is one possible evaluation framework, not a prerequisite for comparing models.
For a potential vulnerability, check whether the alleged behavior is reachable and reproducible in an appropriate isolated environment before treating it as confirmed. OpenAI describes Codex Security as trying to validate potential findings in isolation and proposing fixes for human review. That product description illustrates a validation-and-review workflow; neither it nor a model-generated explanation makes an unverified finding true. Keep human approval in the loop for consequential findings and patches.

What is a practical decision rule?
Choose the least costly and operationally suitable candidate that repeatedly clears your correctness and evidence requirements on the tasks you actually need done. If no candidate clears those requirements, change the workflow, context, or tools and evaluate again; do not resolve a quality failure by trusting a more confident answer.
- Shortlist: use provider guidance to identify plausible tiers or specialized options, while checking access and eligibility.
- Test: compare candidates on the same authorized tasks, inputs, tools, and review criteria.
- Measure: record correctness, evidence quality, false positives, useful tool calls, latency, and total cost, including failures.
- Deploy carefully: confirm data-handling and workflow requirements, then retain appropriate verification and human review.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use AI to analyze code I do not own?
Only proceed when you have permission to analyze the code and the deployment terms allow the intended use. Authorization to inspect a repository does not automatically settle whether you may upload its contents to an external service; check your organization’s rules and the provider’s current data-handling terms.
Should I choose the model with the biggest context window?
Not automatically. A larger available context can help with repository-scale work, but it does not show that the model will retain or correctly use every relevant detail; test whether the context you need stays salient in your actual workflow.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallWhat should I do if two models give different explanations of the same code?
Treat the disagreement as a signal to inspect the relevant code paths and run an appropriate test or reproduction. Prefer the explanation supported by observable evidence, not the one that sounds more certain.
Does prompt caching make repository analysis free or avoid sending context?
No. Caching may reduce the cost of repeated matching prompt prefixes, but it does not remove the need to include relevant context or guarantee a cache hit. Check cached-token usage and realized cost in the chosen provider’s workflow.
