The right Salesforce AI assistant is determined less by the chatbot’s demo and more by how you will pay for work, which records it may access, and where it must take action. In 2026, Salesforce packages Agentforce through free entry capabilities, per-conversation pricing, Flex Credits, add-on user licenses, and higher-tier editions. Start by measuring your expected conversations and actions, then verify Trust Layer behavior, permissions, data residency, and external-system connectivity in a sandbox. Native Salesforce work is usually simplest; ERP, finance, legacy, and on-premises actions often require an integration layer such as MuleSoft.
What should you compare before choosing a Salesforce AI assistant?
Compare four dimensions in this order: workload meter, audience, data controls, and integration reach. A customer-service agent handling unpredictable peaks has a different cost profile from an employee assistant used by a fixed group every day. Likewise, an agent that summarizes Salesforce records needs fewer safeguards than one that changes an order in an external system.
1. Define the work, not just the interface
- Information tasks: answer questions, summarize records, draft emails, or find policy documents.
- Transactional tasks: create cases, update fields, cancel orders, schedule work, or send messages.
- Channel tasks: serve customers on a website, WhatsApp, Messenger, voice, or Slack.
- Employee tasks: assist a known workforce, where access is usually tied to named users.
- Cross-system tasks: read or write to ERP, finance, service, legacy, or on-premises applications.
Write down the expected monthly conversations, agent actions per conversation, peak periods, number of employees, and systems of record. Those figures let you compare a predictable per-user bill with usage-based meters instead of comparing headline prices.

2. Separate a pilot from production
A pilot should prove answer quality, permission behavior, auditability, and integration safety with representative records. It should also capture usage so you can estimate the production meter; a small pilot with unusually short conversations can understate the eventual bill.

How much does Agentforce cost in 2026?
Salesforce lists several Agentforce pricing paths. Public prices are subject to change and final packaging depends on the Salesforce edition, add-ons, geography, contract, and use case, so request an edition-specific quote before signing.
| Pricing or package | Published price | Best fit | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Salesforce Foundations | $0 | Initial evaluation and entry capabilities | Listed as free; confirm included entitlements and limits for your org. |
| Flex Credits | $500 per 100,000 credits | Usage that varies with actions and demand | Salesforce says each Agentforce action uses 20 credits and each Agentforce Voice action uses 30 credits. |
| Conversations | $2 per conversation | Customer interactions where conversation volume is the clearest driver | Confirm what starts and ends a billable conversation in your order form. |
| Agentforce add-on | $125 per user/month | Organizations adding Agentforce capabilities to eligible users | Per-user pricing is easier to forecast when the audience is stable. |
| Industries add-on | $150 per user/month | Industry-specific deployments | Availability and included functions depend on the industry package. |
| Max Edition | From $550 per user/month | Organizations seeking a higher Salesforce edition with broad capabilities | “From” price; edition scope and contract terms determine the actual total. |
| Agentforce User License | $5 per user/month | Low-cost named-user entitlement where applicable | Check which Agentforce functions and permissions this license includes. |
| Agentforce Coworker | $50 per user/month | Digital-worker scenarios rather than a conventional employee seat | Validate audience, channels, and action entitlements in the quote. |
Salesforce describes Flex Credits as a unit of payment aligned to the value created by AI-agent actions. The practical implication is that a single “per user” comparison is misleading: two deployments with the same number of employees can consume very different credits or conversations.
Should you choose per-user, per-conversation, or Flex Credit pricing?
Choose the meter that follows the variable you can forecast most reliably. Per-user plans favor stable access; conversations favor a measurable interaction count; Flex Credits favor action-heavy or volatile workloads where consumption should track activity.
When per-user pricing is sensible
- Your employee audience is known and unlikely to change month to month.
- Most users need regular access, so a fixed entitlement avoids counting every interaction.
- Budget owners prefer a stable subscription line over a variable usage bill.
Per-user pricing can be wasteful if many licensed employees rarely invoke the assistant. Ask whether inactive users can be reassigned, what happens when contractors join, and whether different roles require separate licenses.
When conversation pricing is sensible
- The assistant is customer-facing and interaction volume is easier to forecast than users.
- Sessions have a consistent shape and you can define a conversation for billing purposes.
- You want costs to rise and fall with demand rather than with headcount.
Clarify whether automated follow-ups, handoffs, retries, voice sessions, and reopened sessions count as additional conversations. A low conversation price can become expensive if one customer issue is split into many billable sessions.
When Flex Credits are sensible
- The agent performs different actions with different business value.
- Usage is seasonal, event-driven, or difficult to express as a fixed user count.
- You need visibility into consumption and the ability to tune high-cost actions.
Salesforce states that each standard Agentforce action consumes 20 Flex Credits and each Agentforce Voice action consumes 30. Digital Wallet provides consumption visibility. Build a usage model that counts actions, not merely chats: one conversation that triggers five updates, searches, and notifications can consume substantially more than a simple answer.
A practical break-even worksheet
- Estimate monthly named users who will actively use the assistant.
- Estimate customer conversations per month and the percentage that include voice.
- Estimate actions per conversation, separating standard and voice actions.
- Multiply standard actions by 20 credits and voice actions by 30 credits.
- Convert credits into $500 blocks per 100,000 credits, then compare with the relevant per-user and per-conversation offers.
- Add implementation, integration, monitoring, and contingency costs; the license price is not the full program cost.
Use the calculation for planning, not as a guaranteed invoice. Salesforce can change packaging, and your contract may define entitlements differently from a public list price.

Is Agentforce secure, and does it train on Salesforce data?
Salesforce says Agentforce is integrated with the Einstein Trust Layer, respects standard Salesforce access controls, and uses zero data retention by third-party large language models. Under that stated policy, third-party models do not store or use the data for model training. This is a platform-level description; your org configuration and contract still determine the effective controls.
What the Trust Layer statement covers
- Access enforcement: agents should operate within the user and org permissions applied to Salesforce data.
- Third-party retention: Salesforce states that third-party LLMs do not retain prompts or responses under its zero-data-retention policy.
- Model-training use: Salesforce says data sent through that layer is not used by third-party LLMs for training.
- Controlled grounding: agent responses can be grounded in permitted Salesforce data and configured knowledge sources.
Salesforce’s Agents and Data Usage documentation distinguishes Agentforce platform and agent actions from other Einstein features. Some other features may use aggregated, anonymous global models; those global models do not apply to Agentforce actions unless you add another feature that has its own data-use terms.
What you still need to verify
- Salesforce edition, Agentforce package, and exact license entitlements.
- Object, field, record, sharing-rule, and permission-set behavior for every agent action.
- Grounding sources, indexing boundaries, and how deleted or changed records are reflected.
- Retention, audit-log, export, and legal-hold requirements.
- Subprocessors, encryption, regional processing, and data-residency commitments.
- Whether prompts, traces, analytics, or support diagnostics have different retention terms.
Run negative tests in a sandbox: ask the agent for a record the test user cannot see, attempt an unauthorized update, and inspect the resulting audit trail. A successful answer in a demo does not prove that production sharing rules are correctly enforced.
How do Salesforce permissions affect an AI assistant?
Permissions are the boundary between a useful assistant and an accidental data-disclosure or write-access channel. Map every action to the identity under which it runs, the objects and fields it reads, and the systems it can change.

Build an action-permission matrix
| Action type | Questions to answer | Test evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Read Salesforce record | Which user, role, sharing rule, and field permissions apply? | Prompt and response captured for allowed and denied records. |
| Update Salesforce field | Can the agent modify the field, and are validation rules honored? | Before/after values, error handling, and audit entry. |
| Invoke Flow or Apex | Does the automation run with user or elevated privileges? | Execution logs and a denied-permission test. |
| Call an external API | What credential, scope, and network path are used? | API gateway log, token scope, timeout, and retry behavior. |
| Send a message | Can the agent contact customers or employees without approval? | Recipient restrictions, templates, approval and opt-out tests. |
Require confirmation for irreversible actions such as cancelling an order, changing payment data, deleting records, or sending a legally significant notice. Make the agent explain which records and rules it used so reviewers can diagnose mistakes.
Can Agentforce connect to Slack, WhatsApp, websites, and CRM channels?
Yes. Salesforce positions Agentforce as native to Salesforce Platform and lists CRM, Slack, WhatsApp, Messenger, and websites as interaction or context surfaces. The correct choice depends on where users already work and whether the channel supports the authentication, consent, and audit requirements of the task.
Channel selection guide
| Channel | Useful for | Design concerns |
|---|---|---|
| Salesforce CRM | Internal sellers, service teams, and record-centric work | Preserve page context and enforce the logged-in user’s permissions. |
| Slack | Employee questions, notifications, and collaborative workflows | Control channel membership, message visibility, and action approvals. |
| Customer conversations on a familiar mobile channel | Verify identity, consent, regional messaging rules, and transcript retention. | |
| Messenger | Social-channel support and lead interactions | Plan identity matching and handoff to a human agent. |
| Website chat | Public self-service and lead qualification | Use rate limits, abuse controls, authentication for private data, and escalation paths. |
| Voice | Hands-free service and employee assistance | Voice actions consume 30 Flex Credits each according to Salesforce; test transcription and escalation. |
Do not assume that a channel connector grants access to every Salesforce object. Channel identity, Salesforce permissions, data classification, and action policy remain separate controls.

Do you need MuleSoft to connect Agentforce to an ERP or other external system?
Not necessarily for every integration, but MuleSoft becomes important when the assistant must securely read from or write to ERP, finance, service, legacy, or on-premises systems. Salesforce describes MuleSoft for Agentforce as using APIs and connectors to unlock external data, execute actions in systems of record, and govern interactions through protected APIs.

When native Salesforce tools may be enough
- The required data already resides in Salesforce.
- A Salesforce Flow, prompt template, Apex method, or existing API can perform the action.
- The integration is simple, low-risk, and does not need broad reuse by other applications.
Reusing existing flows, prompt templates, Apex, and APIs can shorten implementation because the business rules already live in the platform.
When an integration layer is justified
- The source is an ERP, finance platform, data warehouse, legacy application, or on-premises system.
- Multiple agents and applications need the same governed API.
- You need centralized authentication, rate limits, transformation, monitoring, retries, and versioning.
- The action must be coordinated across systems of record with clear failure handling.
Ask for an explicit system-of-record design. The agent should not silently create conflicting customer, order, inventory, or payment data in two systems. Define idempotency keys, timeout behavior, partial-failure recovery, and human approval before production.
Other integration patterns Salesforce highlights
Salesforce describes Data 360 as a way to unify structured and unstructured data and support retrieval-augmented generation and vector retrieval. Its platform materials also identify MuleSoft Agent Fabric, Flow, MCP, and A2A as ways to connect applications, APIs, agents, and workflows with governance and observability. These are architectural options, not automatic guarantees that every connector is included in your edition.
What can developers build beyond a chat widget?
The Agentforce developer surface includes Agent API, Custom Connections, Agentforce Mobile SDK, Enhanced Chat, Agentforce DX, Agentforce Python SDK, testing APIs, and session-trace export. This supports embedded assistants, mobile experiences, automated testing, and operational diagnostics rather than a single scripted chat box.

Development checks
- Version agent definitions and prompts alongside application code.
- Use test APIs to cover allowed, denied, ambiguous, and failure scenarios.
- Export session traces to investigate incorrect tool selection or grounding.
- Load-test external APIs and enforce quotas before opening a public channel.
- Keep mobile and web clients from embedding credentials or bypassing server-side authorization.
Should you use AgentExchange or build every action yourself?
Use a marketplace solution when a vetted packaged action or industry workflow is faster and cheaper than building and maintaining one. Build internally when the process is highly proprietary, the required controls are unusual, or the listing cannot meet your data, support, and version requirements.

Salesforce’s June 17, 2026 help material describes AgentExchange as combining AppExchange, Slack Marketplace, and the Agentforce ecosystem, with more than 13,000 solutions and discovery inside Agentforce Builder and Slack. It also cites connectivity to more than 6,000 MCP-connected AgentX apps. Those counts can change, so treat them as a dated marketplace snapshot.
A March 4, 2025 Salesforce launch announcement reported more than 200 partners, including Google Cloud, DocuSign, and Box, and described packaged actions such as creating a case, cancelling an order, updating a Slack canvas, searching Slack, and sending direct messages.
Marketplace due diligence
- Confirm security-review status, data scopes, permissions, and subprocessors.
- Check supported Salesforce editions, API versions, channels, and Agentforce releases.
- Read support, incident-response, upgrade, and end-of-life commitments.
- Identify where prompts, logs, embeddings, and conversation transcripts are stored.
- Review commercial terms separately from Salesforce licensing.
- Run the package with least-privilege permissions before granting production access.
How should you run a safe Agentforce pilot?
A four-stage pilot gives decision-makers evidence on cost, quality, security, and integration instead of relying on a scripted demonstration.
- Select representative work. Include common requests, long-tail questions, multilingual or channel-specific cases, and high-risk actions.
- Prepare a sandbox. Copy realistic data shapes with sensitive values masked, configure production-like sharing rules, and connect only test endpoints.
- Measure quality and usage. Track grounded-answer rate, escalation rate, action success, unauthorized-attempt blocks, latency, conversations, standard actions, and voice actions.
- Test failure paths. Disable an API, remove a permission, create conflicting records, exceed a rate limit, and provide ambiguous instructions.
- Review with process owners. Have service, security, legal, data, and integration owners approve the action matrix and retention plan.
- Price production. Apply measured usage to per-user, conversation, and Flex Credit models, then add integration and operating costs.
- Roll out gradually. Start with read-only assistance, add reversible updates, and introduce irreversible actions only after approval and audit controls work.
What common mistakes make a Salesforce AI assistant expensive or unsafe?
Buying the cheapest headline price
A $0 entry capability or low per-user entitlement may not cover the channels, actions, data sources, or volume you need. Map every required function to an entitlement before comparing totals.
Counting chats instead of actions
Usage-based cost can rise when one conversation triggers many searches, updates, notifications, or voice actions. Instrument action counts and set alerts in Digital Wallet.
Assuming “zero retention” covers every feature
The Trust Layer statement concerns third-party LLM handling for Agentforce. Other Einstein features, analytics, support tooling, or custom integrations may have separate terms.
Granting broad permissions to simplify setup
Over-permissioned agents can expose records or perform changes a user could not make. Prove least privilege with denied tests and review logs after every permission change.

Connecting an external system without an ownership model
Without a defined system of record, retries and partial failures can duplicate orders or create contradictory balances. Design idempotency, reconciliation, and human escalation before enabling writes.
Treating marketplace counts as a quality guarantee
A large catalog does not prove that a particular package meets your security, support, or version requirements. Evaluate the listing and its vendor on your deployment’s terms.
What should be in the final procurement checklist?
- Chosen pricing meter with a documented monthly-volume assumption.
- Edition, add-on, license, channel, voice, and sandbox entitlements in writing.
- Flex Credit or conversation definitions, overage terms, and usage-alert ownership.
- Object, field, record, and action permissions tested for each persona.
- Trust Layer, retention, subprocessors, encryption, residency, and audit commitments reviewed by legal and security.
- Grounding sources, refresh schedule, deletion behavior, and citation or explanation requirements.
- External systems, API scopes, MuleSoft or other integration components, retries, and system-of-record rules.
- Human handoff, approval gates, incident response, rollback, and business-continuity procedures.
- Quality metrics and acceptance thresholds based on representative sandbox cases.
- Named owners for prompts, flows, APIs, permissions, usage monitoring, and quarterly access reviews.
Which Salesforce AI assistant approach is the best fit?
Choose the simplest architecture that meets the workload and control requirements. Start with Salesforce Foundations for a limited evaluation when its entitlements are sufficient. Prefer a per-user package for a stable employee audience, conversations for predictable customer-session volume, and Flex Credits when action volume and business demand vary. Use native flows, Apex, CRM, Data 360, and supported channels when work already lives in Salesforce; introduce MuleSoft or another governed integration layer when the assistant must operate across external or on-premises systems. Approve production only after permission, retention, usage, and failure-path tests pass.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Can I change Agentforce pricing models after launch?
That depends on the order form and Salesforce commercial terms. Ask whether unused credits, conversation commitments, or named-user licenses can be converted, reassigned, or resized at renewal, and model seasonal peaks before committing.
How can I stop an AI agent from taking a risky action?
Remove the underlying permission or action from the agent, then add an approval gate for irreversible operations. Keep a tested emergency disable procedure that administrators can execute without editing production prompts.
What latency should we expect from an external-system action?
There is no single latency figure that applies to every channel or connector. Measure end-to-end time in your sandbox, including authentication, API calls, retries, and human handoff, and set a timeout that produces a clear fallback message.
Do Salesforce AI assistants work with custom objects?
They can use custom objects when the relevant edition, permissions, grounding configuration, and action definitions support them. Test field-level security, relationship traversal, and validation-rule failures rather than assuming standard-object behavior carries over.
