Choose an AI agent framework by the hardest thing your workflow must survive. For explicit branches, retries, approval pauses, and inspectable state, start with LangGraph. For role-based teams and task handoffs, consider CrewAI; for message-driven collaboration, AutoGen; for Google Cloud or a polyglot estate, Google ADK; and for a compact set of agent, handoff, and guardrail primitives, OpenAI Agents SDK. None of those choices alone guarantees that work survives a crash or eventually completes: durable storage, retry and idempotency rules, worker lifecycle, and recovery behavior are separate architecture decisions.
Which AI agent framework is best for long-running tasks?
There is no universally best framework for long-running work. Match the framework to how the workflow should be controlled and coordinated, then verify that the surrounding system can persist, resume, and safely complete work through failures and human pauses.
Long-running tasks make two questions easy to confuse: Can the framework save enough state to continue? and Will the whole system reliably finish the task after a failure? Checkpointing can help restore progress, but it is not by itself a completion guarantee. The answer depends on the storage, workers, retry policy, external side effects, and deployment around the framework as well as its own features.
Start with the hardest requirement
- Explicit control: Start with LangGraph if you need to define branches, loops, approval gates, retries, and state transitions clearly.
- Role-based work: Consider CrewAI when a workflow is naturally expressed as agents with roles, tasks, and handoffs.
- Conversation or events: Consider AutoGen when agents need to collaborate through messages or distributed, event-driven coordination.
- Cloud or language fit: Consider Google ADK for Google Cloud deployment or a team working across its documented language SDKs; consider Microsoft Agent Framework for a Microsoft-oriented estate.
- Compact primitives: Consider OpenAI Agents SDK when agents, tools, handoffs, guardrails, sessions, and run state are the main needs, without requiring a larger graph abstraction.
These are starting points, not performance rankings. The available comparisons describe capabilities and fit, not a shared benchmark of speed, cost, or accuracy. Select a short list, then test it against your workload and failure cases.

What should you evaluate before choosing?
Compare frameworks against execution control, durability, coordination, ecosystem fit, and operational visibility. These axes reveal whether a tool fits the shape of your workflow and expose decisions the framework cannot make for you.
Execution control
Ask who decides what happens next. In an explicit graph, you define state transitions and branches; in a conversational or role-based approach, more of the routing may be expressed through messages, tasks, or model-selected behavior. Explicit control can make a complex process easier to inspect and constrain, but it requires you to design the process. A more conversational approach may fit collaborative work better, but you still need clear rules for completion, escalation, and recovery.
Durability and restart behavior
Check what is saved, when it is saved, and how a resumed run decides what to repeat. A framework’s checkpoint or serialized state is only part of the answer. Determine where that state lives, whether it survives your expected outages and deployments, and what happens if a worker stops halfway through an external action.

Long-running work also needs explicit behavior for waiting. Find out whether a workflow can pause for approval, how that pause is represented, and how it resumes after a person responds. A saved state does not answer whether an in-flight operation may be duplicated or whether the system will retry indefinitely.
Coordination model
Choose the smallest coordination model that fits. A single agent with tools, a sequence of role-based tasks, a conversation among agents, and a distributed event-driven system are different shapes of work. More agents do not automatically make a workflow more reliable; each handoff adds state and failure boundaries that should be observable and recoverable.
Language and ecosystem
Check the languages and deployment environments your team can support, not just those a framework advertises. A framework may fit technically but add friction if its runtime, cloud tooling, or operational practices do not fit the estate. Confirm current support and release status directly before committing, particularly for fast-changing frameworks.
Operations and observability
For production work, inspect whether you can trace a run, see state transitions and tool activity, investigate failures, evaluate behavior, and manage human-in-the-loop controls. These capabilities affect how quickly a team can tell whether a run is waiting, failed, looping, or complete. Verify the exact integrations and deployment options needed in your environment rather than assuming that a documented feature is included in every hosting setup.

How do the main frameworks compare for long-running work?
The frameworks differ most in their control and coordination models, not in a proven universal ranking. Use this comparison to choose candidates, then validate the production behavior that matters for your workload.
| Requirement | Best starting point | Why it may fit | What to validate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Explicit branching, retries, approval pauses, and replay | LangGraph | Graph and state control are suited to workflows where transitions need to be explicit and inspectable. | Design effort and the storage, retry, and recovery layer beneath checkpointing. |
| Role-based research, content, or business process | CrewAI | Agents, crews, tasks, and flows support readable task-oriented pipelines; documented process styles include sequential, hierarchical, and hybrid. | Persistence and observability behavior at production scale. |
| Open-ended team conversation or distributed agents | AutoGen | AgentChat supports conversational single- and multi-agent work; Core is event-driven and designed for scalable multi-agent systems. | Deployment-specific persistence and recovery design. |
| Compact handoffs, tools, and guardrails | OpenAI Agents SDK | Documented primitives include agents, tools, handoffs, guardrails, sessions, serializable run state, human-in-the-loop, MCP, tracing, and testing. | Provider, storage, and long-run execution choices for your application. |
| Google Cloud or a team using several supported languages | Google ADK | Documentation lists Python, TypeScript, Go, Java, and Kotlin SDKs, graph and multi-agent workflows, resume and cancel operations, observability, and Cloud Run or GKE deployment paths. | Cloud fit and the current, changing ADK release surface. |
| Microsoft, .NET, or Azure-oriented estate | Microsoft Agent Framework | A LangChain comparison positions it as a successor to AutoGen and Semantic Kernel, with graph workflows, Python/.NET runtimes, and Azure AI Foundry guardrails. | Verify current release status, support, and feature availability. |
LangChain’s June 6, 2026 comparison covers seven frameworks: LangChain, CrewAI, Microsoft Agent Framework, LlamaIndex Workflows, Google ADK, OpenAI Agents SDK, and Mastra. That is the size of its comparison set, not a benchmark result or proof that these options are interchangeable. Its framing distinguishes LangGraph as a runtime for complex agents needing precision from Deep Agents as a harness for long-running workflows; it also pairs LangGraph with LangSmith for observability and evaluation.
When is LangGraph a good fit?
Start with LangGraph when the task needs explicit branches, loops, retries, approval gates, and state transitions you want to inspect. Its graph-oriented control makes the workflow structure visible, which is useful when you need to reason about what happens after a particular result or pause.
This control comes with design work: you must decide what state to track and what each transition does. LangGraph’s checkpoints can support restoring progress, but they do not, by themselves, settle how your system handles worker failure, durable storage, duplicate external actions, or eventual completion. Design those surrounding behaviors before treating a workflow as production-ready.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteLangChain’s June 6, 2026 comparison also distinguishes LangGraph from Deep Agents, describing the latter as a harness for long-running workflows. Treat that as a product-positioning distinction, not a substitute for checking which framework’s features and operating model suit your specific process.
When does CrewAI suit a task pipeline?
Consider CrewAI when people on your team can describe the process as agents with roles, tasks, and handoffs. Its documentation describes agents, crews, and flows; tasks can use sequential, hierarchical, or hybrid processes, and human-in-the-loop triggers are documented.
CrewAI’s flows are described as able to persist execution and resume long-running workflows. That makes it a relevant candidate for a role-based process that must pause or continue later. Still, verify how its persistence, monitoring, and recovery behave with your chosen deployment and workload; documentation of a capability is not a guarantee for every failure mode or production scale.

Is AutoGen still the right choice?
AutoGen is a reasonable candidate when the work is naturally message-driven, either as a conversation among agents or as distributed event-driven coordination. Microsoft’s documentation separates AgentChat, a conversational single- and multi-agent framework, from Core, an event-driven framework for scalable multi-agent systems and distributed agents.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →That separation matters: first choose whether the workflow is primarily a conversation or an event-driven system. Then verify persistence and recovery in your own deployment design. The framework description does not establish that a particular application will resume safely after a crash or finish a task under every failure condition.
When should you consider OpenAI Agents SDK or Google ADK?
These options can be compelling when their documented primitives or ecosystem fit your team better than a graph-first or role-first model. Compare their exact language, deployment, and run-state needs rather than selecting by feature count.
OpenAI Agents SDK for a compact agent toolkit
Consider OpenAI Agents SDK when you want a focused toolkit covering agents, tools, handoffs, and guardrails. Its official documentation also covers sessions, serializable run state, human-in-the-loop, MCP, tracing, and testing. Those primitives can be enough for a workflow that does not need a larger graph abstraction, but you still need to specify the persistent store and the rules for restarting long-running work.
Google ADK for Google Cloud and polyglot teams
Google ADK’s documentation lists SDKs for Python, TypeScript, Go, Java, and Kotlin, as well as graph workflows, multi-agent workflows, resume and cancel operations, and observability. It also documents deployment to Cloud Run or GKE. This makes it a strong candidate if those languages and deployment paths match your existing environment. Check the current feature and release details before relying on them; the framework’s surface is changing quickly.
What about Microsoft Agent Framework?
Consider Microsoft Agent Framework if your team is centered on Microsoft technologies and wants graph workflows, Python or .NET runtimes, and Azure-oriented tooling. A LangChain comparison positions it as the unified successor to AutoGen and Semantic Kernel and describes Azure AI Foundry guardrails.
Because support and release details can change, do not make a production decision from successor positioning alone. Verify current release status, supported features, deployment routes, and support commitments for the version your team would actually use.

How do you design recovery for an agent that must run for hours or days?
Define recovery as part of the system architecture, not as an assumption attached to a framework feature. Vercel’s August 3, 2026 comparison highlights the distinction between saving state and the underlying layer’s responsibility for failure detection, resumption, and guaranteed completion. The practical work is to specify and test that underlying layer.
Write down the run’s durable state
Identify the minimum information required to continue: current workflow position, inputs and outputs needed by later steps, approval status, and references to any external work already initiated. Decide which component stores each item and when it is committed. A checkpoint that omits a relevant result or pause status can leave a resumed run unable to tell what has already happened.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Set retry and idempotency rules
For each operation that can have an external effect, decide what a retry means. If a worker stops after sending a request but before recording success, a retry may repeat the action. Define how your application detects or safely handles that possibility, and distinguish retryable failures from errors that require a person or a permanent stop.
Specify worker and approval behavior
Document how work is claimed, what happens when a worker disappears, and how a replacement resumes it. For approval pauses, define where the waiting state is stored, how the approval is associated with the right run, and what happens if approval arrives after a deployment or worker restart. These details are application and execution-layer decisions, not just a user-interface feature.
Test recovery, not only the happy path
Run a representative workflow and deliberately interrupt it at points where state or an external action might be in flight. Check that the system can identify what completed, resume from the intended point, avoid unsafe duplicate effects, surface failures to operators, and handle a delayed approval. A demo that resumes one simple run is not evidence that all of these cases work.
Do you need a separate durable workflow engine? Consider one when your system needs explicit orchestration of worker lifecycles, retries, pauses, and completion guarantees beyond what the agent framework and your existing infrastructure provide. The framework and execution layer solve related but distinct problems; choose and test the boundary between them rather than assuming one replaces the other.

- Describe the workflow: Map its steps, branches, loops, tool calls, handoffs, approvals, expected duration, and completion conditions.
- Choose candidates by fit: Select frameworks that match the workflow’s control and coordination model, plus your language and deployment constraints.
- Define pass conditions: Specify what counts as correct state after a pause, a restart, a tool failure, or a delayed human response.
- Exercise failure paths: Interrupt workers and test retries around operations that may have external side effects. Observe whether a run resumes as intended and whether operators can diagnose it.
- Assess operations: Check whether your team can trace runs, inspect transitions, evaluate behavior, and investigate failures in its intended environment.
- Compare the trade-offs: Record the implementation and operational work required to meet the same requirements; do not use the number of advertised features as a proxy for reliability.
Keep the workload, test inputs, and pass criteria consistent. The available framework comparisons are capability and fit descriptions, not common tests of throughput, cost, or accuracy, so a workload-specific evaluation is needed for those questions.
What are the most common selection mistakes?
Most avoidable mistakes come from treating framework capability as an end-to-end guarantee or selecting a coordination model before understanding the workflow.
- Equating checkpointing with durable completion: A saved state can help resume, but does not alone establish failure detection, safe retries, or guaranteed completion.
- Ignoring external side effects: A repeated tool call may matter more than a repeated model step. Define retry behavior around the action, not just the agent run.
- Choosing multi-agent coordination by default: Add agents or handoffs only when the task benefits from that coordination model; account for the additional state and operational boundaries.
- Assuming a feature description guarantees your deployment: Validate storage, recovery, observability, and human pauses in the hosting environment you intend to use.
- Choosing from rankings without a shared test: Published comparisons do not establish a universal speed, cost, or accuracy winner. Test with the same workload and failure conditions.
- Relying on stale support details: Release status, support windows, and hosting options are volatile. Re-check them before adoption.
How should you make the final choice?
Choose the framework whose control and coordination model most naturally expresses the work, then treat persistence and completion as explicit system requirements. For branch-heavy processes, prototype LangGraph; for role-based pipelines, evaluate CrewAI; for message-driven teams, evaluate AutoGen; for a compact agent toolkit, evaluate OpenAI Agents SDK; and for Google Cloud or polyglot needs, evaluate Google ADK. Microsoft-oriented teams can also assess Microsoft Agent Framework after confirming its current release and support details.
Before committing, make one question decisive: can your complete system recover from the failures your task is likely to encounter, without losing important state or repeating consequential work unsafely? Answer that with a tested design for storage, retries, workers, approval pauses, and recovery—not a framework label.
Frequently Asked Questions
How can I tell whether an agent run is waiting for approval or stuck?
Define an explicit run status and expose the last completed transition, pending approval, and time of the last progress update in your operational view. Without those signals, a paused workflow and a stalled worker can look alike.
Should I use the same framework for every agent workflow in my company?
Not necessarily. Standardize where shared tooling and team skills help, but a message-driven collaboration task and a tightly controlled approval workflow may have different best-fit models. Keep the storage, identity, and operational requirements consistent even if framework choices differ.
Can a framework comparison tell me which option will cost less?
Not from capability descriptions alone. Cost depends on the workload and deployment choices, so compare candidates using the same representative tasks and account for the surrounding execution and operations layers.
What should I document before handing a long-running agent workflow to operations?
Record its completion conditions, persisted state, retry boundaries, approval path, expected operator signals, and recovery procedure. Include who owns decisions when a retry is unsafe or a run cannot be resumed automatically.
