Choose a remote code editor by deciding where your code, language tools, and development processes should run—and by checking what your SSH host and network allow. VS Code Remote – SSH runs commands and most workspace extensions on the remote machine; JetBrains connects a local client to a remote IDE backend; Zed pairs a local interface with a remote headless server. None is a universal winner: test your actual project over your actual connection.

Start with the execution model

“Remote development” can mean different things. In one setup, the editor UI is local while terminals, language services, extensions, and builds run remotely. In another, a remote IDE backend does most of the work and a local client displays it. That distinction affects host requirements, network access, plugin support, and whether local applications can work directly with remote files.

Before choosing, identify where each part of your workflow needs to run: source files, language servers, extensions or plugins, terminals, debuggers, and build tools. Also decide whether you need local applications to open or manipulate the remote project as ordinary local files; remote editing and remote filesystem access are not the same thing.

Compare the documented SSH workflows

Editor Architecture Important setup checks
VS Code Remote – SSH Local VS Code UI connects to a remote machine; commands and most workspace extensions run there. SSH server and configuration, remote host resources, extension compatibility, and whether local tools need direct file access.
JetBrains remote development Local JetBrains client connects to a headless IDE backend on the remote host. Connection method and host OS, edition eligibility, and remote access to JetBrains download endpoints or an alternate installer source.
Zed remote development Local Zed UI communicates over SSH with a remote headless server. Local SSH configuration and key setup, remote download or manual-upload path, proxy settings, and forwarding or reconnect needs.

VS Code Remote – SSH: extensions and tools run on the host

Microsoft describes Remote – SSH as a way to open a folder on a remote machine, VM, or container that has an SSH server. The local VS Code window connects to the host, but commands and most workspace extensions run remotely. Microsoft notes that “No source code needs to be on your local machine to gain these benefits since the extension runs commands and other extensions directly on the remote machine.” See Microsoft’s Remote – SSH documentation.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Once connected, the integrated terminal runs on the remote host, and the debugger can launch and debug an application there. Remote – SSH also supports SSH configuration entries, including custom SSH commands and identity files, as well as port forwarding.

This is a good fit when the project’s runtime and tooling belong on the server and the extensions you need work in the remote environment. It does not directly synchronize the source code or make remote-host content available to local tools as ordinary local files. Microsoft documents SSHFS and rsync as workarounds; SSHFS can be significantly slower for bulk file operations. If local software must operate on project files directly, include that limitation in your decision rather than assuming a remote editor provides filesystem mounting.

JetBrains: a local client connects to a remote IDE backend

JetBrains describes a remote server that hosts the source and runs a headless IDE backend, with a local machine providing a thin client. JetBrains Gateway connects the two; JetBrains also documents starting remote development from IntelliJ IDEA and the Toolbox App.

Host support depends on how you connect. JetBrains’ FAQ says Gateway remote backends support Linux servers, while Toolbox connections additionally support Windows and macOS servers. The FAQ also lists network access to JetBrains URLs required for client and runtime downloads. If the server cannot reach those endpoints, the setup guide describes using an internal installer source or uploading an installer. Check the requirements for the exact connection method before provisioning a host.

JetBrains states that Remote Development or Gateway in IntelliJ IDEA is available in the Ultimate edition only. Confirm the current edition and organizational access requirements before adopting the workflow. The FAQ describes the editor protocol as making typing feel instant; that is JetBrains’ characterization, not an independent comparison of responsiveness. See the JetBrains remote development FAQ and JetBrains setup guide.

Zed: a local interface with an SSH-launched remote server

Zed documents a local UI communicating over SSH with a remote headless server. Setup uses the local ssh binary, reads SSH configuration, and downloads or installs a matching server on the remote host. If the remote cannot download the server directly, Zed documents uploading the binary over SSH instead. Its setup details can change by version, so verify current requirements for the version you plan to use. See Zed’s remote development documentation.

Zed recommends key-based authentication for repeated connections; passwords are not supported in settings files. The remote server has its own proxy configuration and does not inherit the local machine’s proxy settings, which matters on networks where downloads must pass through a proxy or approved mirror.

Zed supports forwarding remote services to local ports and uses SSH control multiplexing. Its documentation also describes reconnection behavior and local persistence and restoration of unsaved changes after connection trouble. If you rely on these behaviors, verify that they match your installed version and recovery expectations.

Check the constraints that can rule out an editor

Do these checks with the actual SSH host and project in mind:

  • Host operating system and architecture: Confirm support for the precise remote connection method, then check that the project’s language tools and runtime also support the host.
  • Permissions and capacity: Determine whether you can install or launch the remote components and whether the host has enough CPU, memory, and storage for the IDE backend, language services, builds, and tests.
  • Network policy: Check that SSH is permitted and whether the remote host can reach vendor download endpoints. If it cannot, find out whether an internal source or manual upload is allowed.
  • SSH configuration and credentials: Validate the host alias, identity file or key-agent arrangement, custom SSH command, and any proxy or jump-host settings your environment requires.
  • Project tooling and plugins: Test the languages, extensions or plugins, build tools, containers, and debugger your project actually uses in the location where each editor runs them.
  • Local integration: Identify whether local applications need filesystem-level access to the remote project. A remote editor session alone may not provide it.
  • Forwarding and recovery: Check whether local access to remote services, reconnect behavior, and handling of unsaved work meet your workflow’s needs.
  • Edition and access rules: Confirm applicable licensing, subscription, and organization policies rather than assuming all remote features are included.

Test responsiveness and reliability on your own network

Documentation establishes the intended architecture and supported workflows, but it does not provide a controlled head-to-head benchmark of latency or reliability for VS Code Remote – SSH, JetBrains, and Zed. Vendor descriptions are not a substitute for measurements on your route to the host.

Try each viable option with the same representative project, host, and network conditions. Check the interactions that matter to you—typing, code navigation, diagnostics, terminal commands, debugging, builds, and reconnecting after a connection interruption. Your result depends on the network and host as well as the editor, so a test on a different connection may not predict your experience.

When direct SSH is not the right model

If you do not want to maintain an SSH host, a managed cloud development environment is a different option: the provider supplies the hosted workspace rather than you connecting to your own machine. Microsoft’s overview distinguishes Remote – SSH from Dev Containers, WSL, and Remote – Tunnels, and describes GitHub Codespaces as a managed cloud-hosted development environment. Compare that operating model with self-managed SSH before choosing; it is not simply another SSH editor. See Microsoft’s remote development overview.
