Choose a book-style foldable only if you will regularly use its large inner display for reading, multitasking, video, documents or other tablet-like work. The format gives you a normal-ish phone when closed and a wider, tablet-sized workspace when open, but it costs more and remains more vulnerable to scratches, drops and hinge damage than a conventional phone. Compare both screen positions, the exact durability rating, battery, cameras, software, repair terms and local price before you buy. If the inner screen would be an occasional novelty, a conventional phone plus tablet, an older generation or a certified refurbished foldable may be better value.
What a book-style foldable phone is—and what it is not
A book-style foldable has two halves joined by a vertical hinge. Closed, it works as a phone with an outer cover screen. Open, it presents a much larger inner display, usually in a squarer aspect ratio than a conventional phone. That arrangement is intended to reduce the need to carry a separate small tablet for reading, email, split-screen work, maps or video.
Do not confuse this design with a clamshell foldable. A clamshell, or “Flip,” folds vertically and becomes shorter when closed; its priority is pocketability. A book-style “Fold” opens horizontally and prioritizes a larger working area. The two formats solve different problems, so a small closed size is not a reason to choose a book-style model.
Which? Mobile Phones expert Adam Speight describes the trade-off plainly: “Folding a device into your pocket is a brilliant luxury, but you pay a steep premium to get multiple screens, whether you want to squash a handset down or gain a wider inner display. The complex hinges and flexible glass also make them noticeably more fragile than traditional mobiles. Unless you desperately need to juggle apps on a larger screen or specifically want a pocket-sized square, you’d be wise to weigh one up carefully against a standard phone.”

Start with the use case: will the inner screen earn its premium?
Choose a Fold when the open display solves a recurring problem
- Reading and documents: PDFs, ebooks, spreadsheets and long web pages can be more comfortable on the wider panel, particularly when you would otherwise reach for a tablet.
- Multitasking: Two apps can be visible together, such as a browser beside notes, a calendar beside email or a map beside a message thread.
- Video and travel: The larger panel is useful for films, recipes, maps and hotel or flight information when you do not want to carry another screen.
- Frequent open-screen work: The strongest case is a routine that involves opening the phone several times a day, not an occasional demonstration to friends.
Choose a conventional phone instead when the Fold would stay closed
If your normal activities are messaging, calls, social feeds, quick photos and payments, a premium slab phone usually gives you a simpler, lighter and less fragile experience. A standard phone plus an inexpensive tablet can also provide a larger screen at a lower combined risk, especially if you already own a tablet.
Compare both screens, not just the unfolded specification
Cover-screen usability
Use the closed phone for a full day in a shop or during a return period if possible. Type a message, edit a calendar entry, authenticate to an app, read a notification and use navigation. A narrow cover screen may be excellent for one-handed checks but frustrating for long typing. Check whether the apps you use support the outer display properly and whether opening the phone continues the same task on the inner screen.
Inner-screen usefulness
Open the exact apps you rely on. Look for sensible two-pane layouts, drag-and-drop support, keyboard placement and reliable continuity between displays. Some apps simply stretch into a large phone layout, which may provide less benefit than the screen size suggests. Also inspect reflections, brightness at your normal viewing angle and the crease while scrolling or watching video.
Shape and size
Screen diagonal alone does not describe usable space. Aspect ratio determines how wide a document or split-screen pane feels. Compare the actual dimensions and proportions of each model, then hold it open and closed. A device that looks compact in a specification sheet may feel broad in a pocket, while a narrow cover screen may make typing slower.

The Samsung figure is a manufacturer page snapshot accessed in 2026 and excludes any trade-in effect; it is not a guaranteed transaction price. TechRadar’s $1,799 Pixel figure is likewise a US market snapshot. Taxes, promotions, storage tiers, carrier deals and regional warranty terms can change the amount you actually pay.
TechRadar’s roundup identifies the Pixel 10 Pro Fold as the only model among the premium foldables it compared with an IP68 rating, while most alternatives had lower ingress ratings. That does not make IP68 a promise of drop-proof or scratch-proof construction, and it does not remove the need to check your region’s exact specification.
Understand durability before you treat an IP rating as protection
Flexible screens have different risks
Which? reports that every foldable has some form of crease, although newer hinge designs can make it less noticeable. Its guide also says flexible inner screens are more susceptible to scratches than conventional phone screens and that its test laboratory found foldables less robust under repeated drops. A case can help with some external impacts, but it cannot eliminate risk to the inner panel or hinge.

What IP ratings do and do not cover
Ingress Protection ratings describe specified water and dust tests. They are not a general durability score. Samsung lists IP48 for the US Galaxy Z Fold7, while TechRadar lists the Pixel 10 Pro Fold as IP68-rated; those labels are not interchangeable and should be checked for the exact model and market.
Samsung’s Canada guidance says its current water resistance is not permanent and advises against beach or pool use. Treat that as a manufacturer-specific caution, not a rule that every foldable has identical protection. Ask how liquid damage, hinge contamination, screen scratches and accidental drops are handled under the local warranty.
Questions to ask about repairs
- Is there an authorized repair location near you, or must the phone be shipped?
- What is covered for the inner screen, hinge and protective layer?
- Does opening the phone with a damaged screen create a safety or warranty issue?
- How much is the deductible or out-of-warranty replacement cost?
- Is the return period long enough to inspect the crease, hinge and both displays?
Battery, performance and cameras: evaluate the open-screen workload
Battery capacity is only a starting point
Ask how long the phone lasts with your actual combination of cover-screen checks, open-screen reading, camera use, navigation and cellular data. The larger display and multitasking can consume more power than a conventional phone, while a smaller battery may be used to keep the Fold thin. Look for charging speed and charging accessories as well as capacity.

Performance for multitasking
A processor that feels fast on the cover screen may still slow down with two demanding apps, a browser full of tabs and a video call. Test app switching, split-screen resizing, copy-and-paste between apps and sustained use while charging. Check how much memory and storage the configuration sold in your country includes; those details can vary by market.
Camera compromises
Compare camera output rather than counting lenses. Check indoor photos, moving subjects, zoom, skin tones and video stabilization, then try the rear camera with the phone partly folded and the preview on the cover screen. A foldable’s thinness and hinge can force different camera hardware from a similarly priced conventional flagship, so decide whether the larger display or camera performance is your priority.

- Start closed. Make a call, type a short message, open your password manager and scroll a website. Note whether the cover screen feels like a complete phone or merely a launcher for the inner display.
- Open it repeatedly. Open and close the hinge several times at different angles. Watch for unwanted movement, grinding, uneven resistance or a hinge that will not hold the positions you use.
- Continue an active task. Start an email or map on the cover screen, open the device and confirm that the task transfers cleanly. Repeat in the other direction if the software supports it.
- Run your real apps. Use the browser, messaging app, office tool, streaming service and authenticator you depend on. Check whether split-screen layouts are useful rather than simply enlarged.
- Inspect the inner panel. View white and dark backgrounds at normal brightness. Look for the crease, reflections, dead pixels, touch inconsistencies and the feel of the protective surface.
- Check reach and weight. Read one-handed for several minutes, type with both hands and put the closed phone in the pocket or bag you normally use.
- Verify ownership details. Photograph or record the exact model number, storage tier, IP rating, included charger policy, return window and local repair terms before leaving.
Choose a budget strategy instead of assuming new is best
New flagship
Buy new when you need the current processor, longest remaining software support, a full manufacturer warranty and the latest hinge or screen design. Compare the direct price with carrier financing and trade-in terms, but calculate the total paid rather than focusing on a monthly figure.

An earlier Fold can make sense when its cover screen, inner-screen size and software features meet your needs. Confirm how many operating-system and security updates remain, whether the battery has degraded and whether official parts are still available.

Certified refurbished
Refurbished can reduce the premium, but only if the seller states the battery condition, screen and hinge inspection, warranty length, return process and parts policy. Test both displays immediately; cosmetic grading alone does not establish hinge or inner-screen health.
Conventional phone plus tablet
This combination is often the rational alternative when you need a large screen at home or work but prefer a lighter, simpler phone outdoors. Compare the combined purchase price, charging routine and whether carrying two devices is genuinely inconvenient for you.
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
- Choosing from the unfolded photo: Spend equal time with the cover screen, because that is the state you use for quick tasks.
- Assuming every app becomes tablet-friendly: Test your own apps and check continuity before buying.
- Reading an IP number as drop protection: Ingress testing does not certify resistance to drops, scratches or hinge damage.
- Ignoring repair economics: Obtain a written local repair estimate or protection-plan terms before the return window closes.
- Buying a case without checking the variant: Verify the exact model, hinge clearance and whether the case covers the areas you need; no case guarantees inner-screen protection.
- Comparing prices without matching storage and region: Keep country, taxes, storage, promotions and trade-in assumptions in the same comparison.
- Expecting slab-phone camera results: Compare real photos and video, not just lens counts or marketing labels.
- Treating a lab battery number as your result: Editorial tests use a defined method; your open-screen time, network and brightness determine your experience.
A simple decision rule
Buy a book-style foldable when all three statements are true: you will open it frequently, the cover screen is comfortable enough that you can live with it closed, and the price and repair risk fit your budget. If any one of those fails, compare a conventional phone, a tablet, an older generation or a refurbished device before committing. In every case, test the exact model in both positions and verify the local warranty, rating and price rather than relying on a global specification sheet.
