To find out whether an AI agent or another app can access your bank account, sign in through your bank’s official app or website and look for a permissions or connected-apps list. Check the provider’s name, the accounts and data covered, whether it can request payments or make transactions, and how long the permission lasts. If you do not recognize a connection, use the bank’s controls to revoke it and contact the bank about activity you did not authorize.
The exact menu and the protections available depend on your bank and country. An AI label does not change the key questions: which provider or integration has access, what it is allowed to do, and whether you approved a limited connection or gave it your bank login details.
What does it mean for an app or AI agent to access a bank account?
“Access” can describe several different permissions. Some connections let a provider read selected account information, such as balances or transactions. A separate payment-initiation permission may let a provider request a payment. A formal authority granted to a person may allow transactions or withdrawals. These are not interchangeable, and seeing an app listed does not by itself mean it can move money.

Read the permission shown by your bank rather than relying on an app’s description of its service. Look for the specific accounts involved and whether the permission covers information, payment requests, or broader account activity. For example, the Commonwealth Bank of Australia distinguishes formal third-party account authorities from app connections that provide data feeds; its guidance explains viewing and removing access through NetBank: Third-party access to accounts.

An AI agent may connect through a separate app, financial-data provider, or integration. The AI label alone does not tell you whether it has an active bank authorization or what information it can see. Official guidance describes third-party providers generally, not a universal AI-agent permission screen. Identify the provider or integration named in your bank’s list and, if needed, in the AI service’s connected-account or privacy settings.
It can help to think of access as a set of permissions rather than a yes-or-no status. A provider could be authorized for one account but not another, or for information access without payment initiation. The permission record, not the provider’s marketing description, is the place to confirm the scope. If the wording is unclear, ask the bank to explain the specific entry before deciding whether to leave it active.
How do I check which apps can access my bank account?
Use your bank’s own app or website to find its connected-apps, data-sharing, or account-access controls. Menu labels vary, so search the bank’s settings or help pages and contact it through an official channel if the path is unclear.
- Open the bank directly. Use its official app or type its website address yourself. Do not use a link from a suspicious email, text, or message to check account security.
- Find the access or consent settings. Search settings and help for terms such as “connected apps,” “third-party access,” “Open Banking connections,” “data sharing,” “authorisations,” or “access and consent.” These are examples of labels, not a guaranteed menu path for every bank.
- Review each provider individually. Note its name, which accounts are selected, the information it can receive, any payment-initiation permission, and the authorization date or expiry if shown. Check whether the bank describes the item as a data-sharing consent or a formal account authority.
- Check the AI service as well. Look for connected accounts, linked services, integrations, or privacy controls in the service that you use. Match the provider or integration there to the name shown by the bank; a product’s brand name and the provider name in a consent screen may differ.
- Ask the bank if the list does not answer the question. Use the number or contact route on the bank’s official website or card. Tell the bank which provider or activity concerns you and ask what kind of access it represents.
Take time to review the whole list, not just a familiar app name. Check every account and permission attached to each provider; a connection may cover more than one account. If there is an authorization date, duration, or expiry, record it too. That information can help you distinguish an old connection from one you recently approved and follow up if the provider name is unfamiliar.
UK Open Banking’s published standard says customers should be able to review provider information, permissions, and duration. That is useful guidance for understanding what a consent record should show, but it is not a guarantee that every bank in every country uses the same controls. The standard is available from the Payment Systems Regulator as The Open Banking Standard: Full Report.
Some banks provide concrete, institution-specific routes. HSBC UK says customers can find “Open Banking Connections” in mobile or online banking. Griffin’s UK documentation describes a “Third party apps” list under Settings. CommBank describes viewing or removing formal account authorities through NetBank, while BNZ says customers can manage third-party connections in its app or Internet Banking. These examples show why searching the bank’s own help is more reliable than assuming a menu path will match across institutions.
How can I tell what kind of connection the provider uses?
The main distinction is whether you approved access through a bank-mediated consent flow or gave the third party your bank credentials. The first is designed to let you approve defined permissions without handing the provider your bank password; direct credential sharing is a different, riskier pattern.

|---|---|---|
| Bank-mediated, consent-based sharing | You are sent to your bank to sign in and approve a provider’s access. In this flow, the third party should not receive your bank password. | Confirm the provider, selected accounts, data permissions, any payment permission, and duration shown in the approval or bank settings. |
| Credential sharing | You give the third party your bank username and password, or enter them directly into its service. The provider may then use those credentials to access the account. | Do not assume the connection will appear in a bank’s consent list. If you shared credentials, change your bank password and contact the bank about concerns or suspicious activity. |
Open Banking Limited explains the consent-based model and customer controls in its Open Banking FAQs. ANZ’s Australian guidance advises customers not to share passwords, PINs, or one-time payment codes with third-party platforms: What you should know about linking third-party platforms to your bank account.

A service asking for a username, password, or one-time code outside the bank’s sign-in and approval flow is not the same as a limited consent. Treat that request cautiously. A bank’s list may cover only providers using its secure data-sharing method, so absence from the list does not prove that no access exists.
The practical difference is not merely how the connection was set up. In a consent-based flow, the bank presents a permission for you to approve, and the provider should not receive your bank password. In a credential-sharing arrangement, you have given the service credentials that may let it sign in as you. That can expose broader access than the particular data feed you intended, and it may make the connection harder to identify through a bank’s consent dashboard. The sources describe consent controls as more transparent and direct credential sharing as a riskier pattern; they do not establish that every provider uses the same technology.
If you cannot remember how you connected a service, look at its setup instructions or account-linking settings, then ask the bank what the record means. Avoid entering your credentials again merely to test or re-establish the connection. If you discover that you shared a password or one-time code, use the response steps below rather than treating a blank permissions screen as proof that nothing needs attention.

Do not approve another request from the provider merely to verify its identity. Use the bank’s own cancellation or revocation controls, then contact the bank if the provider or any related account activity remains unclear.
- Record the provider name and the permission or account details shown, without sharing sensitive account information with anyone who contacts you unexpectedly.
- Use the bank’s listed control to cancel or revoke the connection. If there is no clear control, contact the bank through its official website or the number on your card.
- Review recent account activity and contact the bank promptly about transactions or other activity you did not authorize.
- Check the provider’s own connected-account or privacy controls. If you want information it already received deleted, ask the provider directly; revoking future bank access may not erase an existing copy.
- If you gave the provider your bank login details or a one-time code, change your bank password, review multifactor authentication and account alerts, and contact your bank.
Bank of America says its data-sharing list covers providers using its secure data-sharing method. It also notes that a provider using shared login credentials may not appear there. If a connection is missing or unexplained, check the service and ask the bank rather than treating the list as exhaustive: Third Party App/Service Data Sharing.
When you contact the bank, describe the item as precisely as you can: the provider name, the account or accounts involved, and the permission displayed. Ask whether it is a data-sharing consent, a payment-related permission, or a formal authority, and whether the bank can identify a cancellation route. If you see activity you did not authorize, raise that with the bank promptly rather than waiting for the provider to explain its listing.
If the provider is unfamiliar but there is no suspicious account activity, the next steps are still to confirm the type and scope of access and revoke it if you do not want it. Do not assume that an unfamiliar name is harmless, but do not assume from the name alone that money has been moved. The bank can help explain what the authorization permits.

For example, HSBC UK says customers can cancel a relevant connection in “Open Banking Connections” in mobile or online banking, with immediate effect; it also says cancellation can be requested from the third party. Griffin’s UK documentation gives a different example: open the app, go to Settings, then Third party apps, review the list, and revoke a provider. These are institution-specific instructions, not universal paths. See HSBC UK Open Banking Frequently Asked Questions and Griffin’s Open Banking guide.
After revoking, check whether the bank shows the connection as cancelled or inactive. If the service still displays linked account data, that does not necessarily mean the bank connection remains active: information the service already received may still be stored there. Kiwibank advises customers to contact the data recipient about deletion where needed: Data sharing | Open banking.
Revocation is about stopping the connection going forward; it should not be treated as a request to erase information already held by the provider. If you want a stored copy deleted, contact the provider and ask about its deletion process. You may also want to disconnect the account in the service’s own controls, but confirm separately in the bank’s list that the bank authorization has been cancelled.

Some banks allow a removed connection to be restored, but that is not universal. BNZ says its customers can view, remove, or restore third-party connections in the app or Internet Banking. Do not rely on restoration being available elsewhere: if you later want to reconnect an app, follow the bank’s current approval flow and review the requested permissions again.
Why might a connection not appear in my bank’s list?
A permissions dashboard can be limited to a particular connection method or type of authorization. A provider that used credentials you supplied may not appear in a list designed for bank-mediated consent, and a formal authority may be recorded separately from a simple app data connection.
If you cannot match a service to a listed provider, check the service’s account-linking settings and ask your bank whether the access is an Open Banking consent, a formal authority, or another arrangement. Do not infer that an empty or incomplete list rules out access. Bank of America describes this limitation for providers outside its secure protocol, while CommBank separately documents formal authorities and app data feeds.
Provider names may also differ from the consumer-facing name of the app or AI service. Check the service’s connected-account or integration settings for a provider name, and ask the bank to clarify an entry you cannot identify. Neither step should require approving a new request or handing over a password. If the bank confirms that the connection is not in its consent list, ask what other access types or records you should check.
An account authority granted to a person is especially important to distinguish from an app connection. CommBank’s guidance treats these separately, and an authority may include transaction permissions. If you see an authority you do not recognize, use the bank’s instructions for that authority rather than assuming that removing an app feed will remove it too.

Do protections and menu paths work the same in every country?
No. Bank interfaces, consent systems, regulator registers, and available revocation options depend on the country and institution. UK Open Banking guidance says regulated providers are enrolled in its directory and points customers to the FCA or relevant regulator registers; that UK framework should not be assumed to apply elsewhere.
For a connection associated with an Australian account, ANZ’s guidance addresses local considerations. For a New Zealand account, BNZ says customers can view, remove, or restore third-party connections in its app or Internet Banking: BNZ Open banking. Use the instructions from your own bank and the relevant local regulator rather than relying on a menu path or regulatory protection from another country.
When checking a provider’s status, use the directory or regulator register relevant to your jurisdiction. Open Banking Limited’s UK guidance points customers to its provider directory and to the FCA or relevant regulator registers. These checks can help explain whether a provider is part of the applicable framework, but they do not replace reviewing the permission in your bank account. Do not assume that a provider’s status in one country establishes its status or protections for an account held elsewhere.
What should I record when reviewing a permission?
A quick record helps you distinguish a familiar data feed from a permission you did not intend to grant. For each entry, note:
- The provider name shown by the bank and the app or service you believe it belongs to.
- Which accounts were selected, rather than assuming the consent covers only the account you use most.
- What data the provider can access and whether the permission includes payment initiation or another transaction-related authority.
- When the authorization began and any expiry or duration displayed.
- Whether the bank identifies the entry as a consent-based connection, an app data feed, or a formal account authority.
- Whether you still use the service and whether its own privacy controls offer a way to disconnect it or request deletion of stored information.
If a permission screen uses unfamiliar terms, ask the bank what each permission allows before approving or leaving it active. Do not infer transaction capability from the broad word “access”; use the specific scope the bank displays.
This record is also useful if you need to contact the bank or provider. Keep it limited to the details needed to identify the connection; do not send passwords, PINs, one-time codes, or other credentials. If you revoke access, note the date and the status the bank displays afterward. That can help you distinguish a cancelled bank connection from information still visible inside the third-party service.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an AI agent see my bank transactions?
It depends on whether the AI product or an integration it uses has an active authorization and what that permission covers. Check the named provider in your bank’s connected-app or consent settings and match it to the service’s connected-account settings. A data permission may include transactions, but the AI label alone does not establish what it can see.
Can a connected app move money from my account?
Not necessarily. Some connections read balances or transactions; a separate payment-initiation permission may let a provider request a payment, and a formal account authority may permit broader transactions. Check the exact permission shown by your bank rather than assuming every listed app can move money.

Can an app access my account if it is not listed by my bank?
Possibly. A bank’s list may show only providers using its secure, consent-based data-sharing method. A provider that received login credentials may not appear, and formal account authorities may be recorded separately. Check the service’s account-linking settings and ask your bank if the list does not explain a connection.
Does revoking access delete the data an app already received?
Not necessarily. Revoking a bank connection can stop future sharing, but information already received may remain with the provider. Contact the service directly to ask about deletion of its stored copy.
Can I cancel a connection through the app instead of my bank?
Some providers or banks offer a cancellation route through the service, but availability depends on the institution and authorization type. HSBC UK, for example, says a relevant Open Banking connection can be cancelled through its banking controls or requested from the third party. Confirm the final status with your bank.
Can I restore a bank connection after revoking it?
Some banks provide a way to restore a third-party connection. BNZ says customers can view, remove, or restore connections through its app or Internet Banking, but that option should not be assumed to exist at every bank.
Does deleting a banking app from my phone cancel its bank permission?
Removing an app from a device is not the same as using the bank’s revocation control. Confirm the connection’s status through your bank rather than relying on uninstalling the app.
Do Open Banking permissions always expire automatically?
The duration depends on the authorization and the rules that apply to your bank and country. Check the duration or expiry shown in the consent details, and ask the bank if none is displayed.
What should I do if I gave a third-party service my bank password or one-time code?
Change your bank password, review multifactor authentication and account alerts, and contact your bank about concerns or suspicious activity. ANZ advises against sharing passwords, PINs, and one-time payment codes, and Bank of America recommends changing the bank password when credentials were shared.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe Bottom Line
Check connected apps in your bank’s official settings, inspect each provider’s accounts and permissions, and revoke any connection you do not want. If you shared bank credentials or see activity you did not authorize, change your password and contact the bank. Remember that revoking access may stop future sharing without deleting information already held by the provider.
