Check the model number printed on the back of the controller, directly beneath the Nintendo logo: Nintendo says an official Nintendo Switch Pro Controller is marked HAC-013, regardless of its color or special edition. If the controller is advertised as the Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Edition, compare its design with Nintendo’s official product reference too. These checks can flag inconsistencies, but neither proves that a particular unit is genuine: Nintendo has identified counterfeit Switch Pro Controllers.
Where to find the model number
- Turn the controller over. Look on the back for the Nintendo logo.
- Read the marking directly below the logo. Nintendo’s published check for an official Switch Pro Controller is model number HAC-013.
- Compare the marking with the advertised product. A different model number does not match Nintendo’s stated model number for official Switch Pro Controllers. Treat that mismatch as a reason to investigate, rather than relying on the listing description.
Nintendo says HAC-013 applies regardless of a controller’s color or special edition. The same model number is therefore expected on an official Zelda-themed Pro Controller as on a standard one.
How to check the Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom edition
Nintendo officially released a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Edition. Nintendo’s US announcement gave the release date as May 12, 2023, and Nintendo’s product information identifies the same edition and date.
- Confirm what edition the seller claims it is. “Zelda Pro Controller” can describe an official edition, a fan-made design, or a listing using Zelda imagery without establishing that Nintendo made the controller.
- Compare the controller with Nintendo’s official product image. Look at the overall design and whether the pictured edition matches the Tears of the Kingdom reference.
- Use the comparison as a clue, not a verdict. Nintendo’s product image is a reference for the edition; it is not a complete forensic guide to detecting every counterfeit variation.
A controller can resemble the official design and still not be authenticated by that resemblance. Likewise, Zelda artwork alone does not establish that a controller is an official Nintendo edition.

What to do if a marking or design seems wrong
- Keep the purchase records. Save the listing, seller details, receipt, and return information while you resolve a concern.
- Ask the seller for clarification. Point to the specific discrepancy—for example, a model number other than HAC-013 or a design that does not match the claimed edition.
- Contact Nintendo if you need help with a specific unit. Nintendo’s support guidance covers the model-number check. If pairing remains unresolved, it directs users toward repair support.
A pairing problem by itself does not prove that a controller is counterfeit. The model-number check and the Zelda-design comparison address different questions; neither replaces getting help with an unresolved device problem.
Release date and original US price
Nintendo of America announced a $74.99 US suggested retail price for the Tears of the Kingdom edition in its March 28, 2023 announcement. That figure is the launch MSRP, not a current price or a reliable authenticity test. A listing price cannot establish whether the particular controller being sold is genuine.

Nintendo’s EU Declaration of Conformity identifies HAC-013 as the model of the main part and gives a revision date of May 8, 2025. That documentation supports the model designation; it does not provide a procedure for authenticating an individual used or newly purchased controller.

The practical verdict
For the first check, look for HAC-013 below the Nintendo logo on the back. If the seller claims the controller is the Tears of the Kingdom Edition, compare its design with Nintendo’s official product reference. Consider any mismatch a reason to investigate, but do not treat a matching mark, image, price, or pairing result as conclusive proof of authenticity.
