In Blender, select the mesh, open the 3D Print Toolbox in the 3D Viewport sidebar, and run its Solid check. A watertight mesh is closed everywhere: each edge should connect to exactly two faces. Use the highlighted results to find boundary or other non-manifold edges, repair only after preserving the original, then run the check again and inspect the model in your intended slicer. Passing this test checks closure; it does not guarantee that the model will print successfully.
What does “watertight” mean for a 3D model?
For slicing, watertight means the model’s surface is closed everywhere so it encloses a volume without open boundary edges. Blender’s 3D Print Toolbox describes this as a requirement for correctly slicing a mesh. The key practical test is topological: every mesh edge connects to exactly two faces.
An edge shared by only one face lies on an open boundary, which indicates a hole in the surface. An edge connected to more than two faces also fails the two-face condition. Both are non-manifold edges for this check, even though they arise from different configurations. “Non-manifold edges detected” is therefore a prompt to inspect the edge connections, not a diagnosis of just one kind of defect.
A closed shell can be made from many separate surfaces in a scene, but the object you export should be the intended mesh and should have a coherent closed surface. A visible seam, a tiny opening hidden inside a model, or an accidental face deletion can all create a boundary edge even when the outside of the object looks complete. The check is valuable because it examines the mesh relationships rather than relying on a visual guess.

Watertightness is about whether the surface is closed. It does not by itself tell you whether the walls are thick enough, whether surfaces intersect, whether faces or edges are degenerate, or whether the model has printable overhangs. Those are separate checks. A model can therefore be watertight and still require substantial design or slicing work.
Why the exactly-two-faces rule matters
Think of each edge as a seam between neighboring faces. On a closed shell, one face lies on each side of that seam, so the edge has two face connections. If there is only one connection, the seam is exposed at a boundary and the surface is open. If there are three or more, several surfaces are trying to occupy the same edge, creating a non-manifold junction that does not describe one ordinary enclosed shell.
This distinction helps you choose a repair. A one-face edge usually directs you toward an opening, but a multiple-face edge may indicate overlapping pieces, duplicated faces, or an unintended junction. Filling every highlighted location with a new face can conceal the symptom while leaving the underlying topology wrong. Inspect the surrounding faces and the design intent before changing anything.
“Closed” also should not be confused with “visually solid.” Internal faces, coincident surfaces, and intersecting components can make a viewport preview look filled while still producing ambiguous topology. The Solid check and its selected results give you a concrete place to investigate instead of relying only on shading.
How do I check a model in Blender?
Blender’s 3D Print Toolbox is an analysis utility for meshes intended for slicing. Its Solid check can identify non-manifold edges and bad contiguous edges, while other checks address additional geometry issues. The Blender Manual documents the toolbox for version 4.0; exact availability and labels can vary with the Blender version and extension setup. An Extensions listing showed version 1.5.0 compatible with Blender 4.2 LTS and newer at the time it was accessed, so confirm the add-on’s current compatibility in your installation rather than assuming every version has identical controls.
- Open and select the mesh. Load the model in Blender and select the mesh object you want to check. Make sure you are checking the intended object rather than an unrelated scene item. If your scene contains several objects, check the object or combined mesh that you actually intend to export.
- Open the toolbox. In the 3D Viewport, open the sidebar and find the 3D Print Toolbox. The documented location is the 3D Viewport sidebar. If the panel is not present, check whether the toolbox or extension is enabled for your Blender installation before drawing conclusions about the model.
- Run the Solid check. Use the toolbox’s Solid check to inspect the mesh for issues including non-manifold edges and bad contiguous edges. Let the check complete before editing so you have an initial record of the model’s condition.
- Inspect the selected results. Use the toolbox’s result selection to focus on the reported locations in the viewport. Look for open boundaries, edges with too many connected faces, and places where faces or edges may be incorrectly connected. Zoom in and orbit around a highlighted region; a problem that appears to be a hole from one angle may be an intersecting or duplicated surface from another.
- Run related checks. Inspect any reported intersections or degenerate faces and edges. Consider thin geometry and overhangs separately; a clean Solid result does not rule them out. The toolbox can select reported problem areas, which lets you examine each category without treating every result as the same defect.
- Record what you found. Before making repairs, note whether the results are boundary edges, multiple-face edges, bad contiguous edges, intersections, or degeneracies. This simple separation makes it easier to tell whether a later repair actually addressed the original problem or merely changed its appearance.
The toolbox reports geometry problems; it does not decide whether a shape change is acceptable for your design. Inspect each selected region in context before editing or repairing it. A highlighted opening might be intentional in a model that is not meant to be a closed solid, while an unnoticed opening in a part intended for slicing is a problem.

What do the check results mean?
Read each finding as a separate kind of geometry issue. A boundary edge directly indicates an opening in the surface; other findings may signal a different problem that affects slicing or printability.

|---|---|---|
| Edge connected to one face | An open boundary, which indicates a hole in the surface. | Inspect the opening and determine whether the mesh should be closed there. Check the perimeter and nearby faces rather than adding a face blindly. |
| Edge connected to more than two faces | The edge does not meet the exactly-two-faces condition. | Inspect how the surrounding faces meet; do not assume that simply filling a hole is the right fix. Look for overlapping or duplicated surfaces and unintended junctions. |
| Bad contiguous edges | A separate reported geometry issue that can point to inconsistent face normals. | Inspect the affected faces and their orientation. Confirm the repair has not introduced a new boundary or changed the intended surface. |
| Intersecting surfaces | Surfaces cross or overlap; this is not the same as an open boundary edge. | Check the area in the model and confirm how the intended slicer handles it. Decide whether the intersection is intentional and whether separate parts should be joined cleanly. |
| Degenerate faces or edges | Geometry that is not well-formed; these are separate from the watertight edge test. | Inspect and correct the affected geometry, then rerun checks. Do not treat a passing closure result as proof that degenerate elements are harmless. |
| Thin geometry or overhangs | Potential printability concerns, not proof that the surface is open. | Assess them as separate design and slicing concerns. A closed shell can still contain walls or features that your process cannot reproduce reliably. |
Blender’s Solid check is useful for determining whether the mesh is closed, but its findings should not be collapsed into one generic “hole” diagnosis. The exact location and type of each result determine what needs attention. For example, closing a boundary does nothing to resolve a three-face edge, and correcting a normal does not add missing geometry.
How can I locate a hidden hole?
Start with the toolbox’s selection of reported results, then isolate one area at a time. Frame the selected edges, inspect both the exterior and interior sides, and follow the edge loop until it joins known-good topology. A boundary edge that disappears behind another surface may belong to an internal cavity or a second shell. The useful question is not only “where is the red highlight?” but also “which surfaces are supposed to meet here?”
Compare the highlighted region with the original design or a preserved copy. If a hole is intentional, document that it belongs to an open-surface object rather than a closed printable solid. If it is accidental, determine whether the surrounding faces are missing, duplicated, or simply disconnected. This diagnosis prevents an automated operation from sealing an opening that was meant to remain accessible.
After any local edit, rerun the Solid check instead of assuming that one repaired region represents the entire object. A mesh may contain several independent boundary loops, and a fix in one location can expose another issue that was previously difficult to see.
How can I repair a non-watertight mesh safely?
Blender’s Make Manifold operation attempts to correct several defects, including bad normals and holes. It is an attempted repair, not a guarantee that the resulting geometry matches your intent or is ready to print. The operation can also remove empty edges or faces. Because those changes may affect topology or details, treat the command as a controlled experiment on a copy.

- Preserve the original. Save a separate copy of the file or duplicate the mesh before applying an automated repair. Keep the untouched version available if a hole was intentional or if the repair changes important geometry.
- Use Make Manifold on the copy. The operation can attempt to repair issues such as holes and bad normals, and remove empty edges or faces. Apply it only after you understand which object is active and which results you are trying to address.
- Rerun the checks. Run the Solid check and inspect related reported issues again. A repair should not be treated as verified until you have checked the resulting mesh. Confirm that boundary and other non-manifold results have been resolved or understand why a deliberate open surface remains.
- Inspect the shape. Examine repaired regions in the viewport to confirm that closing holes or correcting geometry did not alter intended openings, details, or boundaries. Compare against the original copy, especially around thin features and transitions.
- Check the other categories. Make Manifold is not a substitute for checking intersections, degenerate faces or edges, thin geometry, or overhangs. Run the relevant toolbox checks and review their selected results after the repair.
- Validate in the target slicer. Import the repaired model into the slicer you plan to use and inspect the sliced layers before printing. The slicer view is a separate practical test of how the repaired mesh is interpreted.
If an automatic repair produces an unexpected result, return to the preserved original and inspect the affected region manually rather than assuming another automatic pass will improve it. Repeated automated repairs can make it harder to identify which operation changed the design.
Does a watertight result mean the model is ready to print?
No. A watertight result addresses closure, not every condition that affects a print. Intersections, degenerate geometry, thin walls, and overhangs are separate concerns, and a mesh can pass the closed-surface test while still having one of them.
For example, two surfaces can intersect while every edge still has two face connections. Likewise, a very thin but closed wall may be difficult for a particular process, and a closed shape can contain an overhang that needs support or a different orientation. These are design and slicing questions, not alternate definitions of watertightness.

That tolerance is not a universal guarantee. One slicer may interpret an intersection acceptably while another produces unexpected regions. Import the model into the slicer you will actually use, inspect the sliced layers for the intended model, and treat the slicer’s result as a separate validation step.
Look through the layer preview rather than stopping at a successful import. Confirm that internal cavities, walls, openings, and intended separate features appear in the expected layers. If the preview differs from the design, return to the mesh and investigate even if the Solid check passed.
Autodesk’s 2019 Netfabb documentation makes the general point that additive-manufacturing preparation benefits from a mesh in a known, well-defined state. That is useful context for careful validation, but it does not establish a current slicer-specific workflow or mean that a Blender check alone certifies print success.

Which checks should I complete before exporting?
Use this short sequence to separate mesh closure from the other checks that can matter to a print:
- Confirm the intended object: Select the mesh or combined object that will actually be exported, not a hidden duplicate or unrelated scene element.
- Closure: Run the Solid check and investigate boundary and other non-manifold edges. Remember that one-face edges indicate holes and more-than-two-face edges violate the same rule for a different reason.
- Normals and related geometry: Review bad contiguous edges, intersections, and degenerate faces or edges if reported. Follow the selected results to their actual geometry.
- Design printability: Consider thin geometry and overhangs separately from watertightness. A closed surface is necessary for the stated slicing requirement but is not a print-success guarantee.
- Repair verification: If you used Make Manifold, run the checks again and inspect changed areas against the preserved original.
- Slicer validation: Check the actual sliced layers in the target slicer before printing. Account for the fact that slicers differ in how much untidy geometry or intersections they tolerate.
Do not export immediately after a repair merely because the error count changed. The useful completion condition is a clean second check plus a visual inspection that the model still expresses the intended design. Keep the original file and the repaired version distinguishable so you can reproduce or undo the decision later.
The Blender Manual’s 3D Print Toolbox documentation is versioned for Blender 4.0. An Extensions listing reported version 1.5.0 compatibility with Blender 4.2 LTS and newer at the time it was accessed; verify current version details in your installation. Autodesk’s cited Netfabb documentation is from 2019 and supports only the general preparation point above; it should not be read as a current set of slicer instructions.

- Equating “no visible hole” with watertight: Hidden or internal boundary edges can remain even when the exterior looks complete. Use the Solid check.
- Treating every non-manifold result as the same: One-face and more-than-two-face edges require different inspection. The label identifies a failed condition, not a single repair.
- Repairing the only copy: Make Manifold is an attempt and may change geometry. Preserve the original first.
- Stopping after Make Manifold: Run the checks again and inspect the shape. An operation that completes without an obvious error is not proof of correctness.
- Confusing closure with printability: Intersections, degeneracies, thin geometry, and overhangs need their own review.
- Skipping the slicer preview: Blender’s result is not a universal certification. Inspect layers in the slicer you intend to use.
- Assuming version details are permanent: Toolbox availability and labels depend on Blender and extension versions. Use the documentation and installation relevant to your setup.
Is special hardware or paid software required?
No physical tool is necessary for this workflow. The 3D Print Toolbox performs the analysis in Blender’s 3D Viewport, and Make Manifold provides an in-application repair attempt. A printer is not required to perform the mesh checks, although the eventual slicer preview remains important before committing to a print.
If you compare other mesh utilities, use practical criteria rather than a generic feature list: does the tool report boundary and non-manifold edges, does it only diagnose or also repair, do repairs preserve the intended geometry, what platforms and file formats does it support, and can you verify the result in the target slicer? Those questions matter more than whether a program simply advertises a “repair” button.

What does “non-manifold edges detected” mean in Blender?
It means one or more edges fail the Solid check’s requirement to connect to exactly two faces. An edge joined to one face marks an open boundary; one joined to more than two faces is also non-manifold, but is a different configuration.

How do I know whether the reported edge is a hole?
An edge connected to exactly one face is a boundary edge and indicates a hole in the surface. An edge connected to more than two faces also fails the check, but it may reflect overlapping or incorrectly joined surfaces rather than a simple opening.
Where is the watertight check in Blender?
Select the mesh, open the 3D Viewport sidebar, and find the 3D Print Toolbox. Run its Solid check, then use the reported-result selection to inspect the highlighted geometry. Exact labels can vary with Blender or extension versions.
Can I use Make Manifold without checking the result?
No. Blender documents Make Manifold as an attempt to repair defects, not a guarantee that the mesh is correct. Keep an untouched copy, rerun the checks, and inspect the repaired shape.

The operation attempts to address several defects, including holes and bad normals, and can remove empty edges or faces. Its result still needs verification, and it may not preserve every design detail exactly as intended.
Can a model be watertight but still have a printing problem?
Yes. Closure does not resolve issues such as thin geometry, overhangs, intersections, or degenerate faces and edges. Those require separate inspection and validation in the intended slicing workflow.
Should I fix intersections even when the slicer imports the file?
Inspect them and confirm how the intended slicer handles them. Blender’s manual notes that some slicers may tolerate certain intersections, but that behavior is not universal. Review the actual sliced layers rather than relying on import success.
Do I need a physical tool to check whether a mesh is watertight?
No physical tool is needed for the Blender workflow: the 3D Print Toolbox analyzes the mesh in the 3D Viewport. The check is software-based, though a passing result is not a guarantee of successful printing.
What should I do if the toolbox reports no boundary edges but the slicer preview looks wrong?
Treat the preview as a separate validation signal. Recheck intersections, degenerate geometry, thin features, and overhangs, inspect the affected layers, and compare the slicer result with the intended design.
The Bottom Line
Run Blender’s 3D Print Toolbox Solid check, investigate every boundary or other non-manifold edge, and preserve the original before using Make Manifold. Rerun all checks, inspect the repaired shape, and verify the sliced layers in the slicer you will use. Watertight means closed; it is necessary for reliable slicing but is not the same as print-ready.
