Yes—LEGO Pokémon sets use the LEGO System in Play, so you can build with them alongside your existing LEGO-system bricks. The separate question is whether a set has the SMART Play components needed for interactive features: a set labelled SMART Play Compatible does not include a SMART Brick, while an All-in-One set does. LEGO’s guidance does not establish that third-party bricks are compatible.

First decide what kind of compatibility you mean

“Compatible” can mean either that bricks can be used together to build a model, or that a set contains the electronics needed for SMART Play interactions. Those are different checks. A LEGO Pokémon model remains a LEGO build whether or not it has interactive SMART Play features.

The LEGO Group announced the Pokémon range with The Pokémon Company International on June 2, 2026. In that announcement, Julia Goldin, the LEGO Group’s Chief Marketing and Product Officer, described LEGO SMART Play as “an expansion of our existing LEGO System-in-Play” being integrated into the latest LEGO Pokémon sets. This places the range within LEGO’s own building system; it is not a blanket test result for every piece shape or every possible construction.

Check a set in three steps

  1. Identify the bricks you want to use. If they are standard LEGO-system pieces, the available official guidance supports using LEGO Pokémon bricks alongside them. If they are from another brand, do not assume fit: the guidance here does not verify third-party compatibility.
  2. Separate construction from interaction. Decide whether you only want to build or modify the model, or whether you also want SMART Play features. The build uses LEGO-system bricks; the interactive system depends on SMART components.
  3. Read the set category and included components. Look for whether the product is described as SMART Play All-in-One or SMART Play Compatible, then check the component list. The category tells you whether a SMART Brick is included.

What the SMART Play labels mean

Set category Components described by LEGO What that means for you
SMART Play All-in-One SMART Brick, SMART Tags, and charger The set includes a SMART Brick as well as the listed SMART Play components.
SMART Play Compatible SMART Tags, but no SMART Brick The set can participate in the SMART Play system, but you need a SMART Brick from an All-in-One set to activate those features.

LEGO says SMART Bricks, SMART Minifigures, and SMART Tags can be combined with any LEGO sets. “Compatible” in a set label therefore describes the set’s relationship to the interactive system; it does not mean that the box contains every component required for SMART Play. Check the specific product’s current component description rather than inferring contents from the label alone.

What if your bricks are LEGO DUPLO?

LEGO’s published guidance gives a specific stud-count rule for fitting LEGO pieces with DUPLO bricks: pieces with an even number of studs fit. LEGO’s examples are a 2×2 or 2×4 brick, which fit, and a 1×2 or 2×3 brick, which do not. This is a limited fit rule, not a claim that every LEGO Pokémon piece will connect directly to every DUPLO piece. For a particular connection, count the studs on the LEGO piece and test the intended arrangement.

How to interpret a mismatch

  • The bricks do not connect as expected: confirm that both pieces are LEGO-system pieces, and check whether DUPLO is involved. For DUPLO connections, apply LEGO’s even-stud rule. The available guidance does not certify every shape or building configuration.
  • The model builds, but SMART Play does not work: check whether the set is Compatible rather than All-in-One. A Compatible set has Tags but no SMART Brick; the required Brick must come from an All-in-One set.
  • You are mixing in another brand’s bricks: treat fit as unverified. LEGO’s statements about combining pieces and SMART Play components apply to LEGO sets, not to unrelated brick brands.
  • You are shopping in a different market or at a later date: confirm the local listing and current package contents. Availability and product descriptions can vary by market and over time.

What the compatibility guidance does—and does not—establish

LEGO’s official materials establish that LEGO Pokémon belongs to its LEGO building system and that SMART Play elements are designed to combine with LEGO sets. They also distinguish All-in-One and Compatible set contents and specify a DUPLO stud-count exception. They do not establish that every piece is interchangeable in every build, certify non-LEGO bricks, or mean that every Pokémon set includes a SMART Brick. Use the system and component checks above rather than treating the word “compatible” as a universal guarantee.
