To change the default card on an iPhone, open Wallet, touch and hold the card you want to use, then drag it in front of your other payment cards. To turn off Apple Pay notifications, use either iPhone’s general Wallet notification settings or the notification controls for an individual card, depending on which alerts you want to change.
How do I change my default card on Apple Pay?
On iPhone, the first payment card you add to Wallet becomes the default for that device. To change it, reorder the cards in Wallet:
- Open the Wallet app.
- Touch and hold the card you want as the default.
- Drag it in front of your other payment cards.
Apple’s instructions for changing cards used with Apple Pay cover the available device-specific procedures. Menu names can vary by operating-system version.
Set the default on Apple Watch
On the iPhone paired with your watch, open the Apple Watch app and go to My Watch > Wallet & Apple Pay > Default Card. Select the card you want.

Set the default on Mac
On a Mac with Touch ID, open System Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay and select a card. On older macOS versions, the setting may be in System Preferences.
Set the default on iPad or Apple Vision Pro
Open Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay, then choose a card under Transaction Defaults.

Default card versus choosing a card for one payment
Changing the default sets which card appears first for future payments on that device. It does not prevent you from using another card at checkout. For an in-store payment, the default appears first; before authenticating, tap the cards shown at the bottom of the payment screen and select a different one for that transaction. Change general Wallet notifications on iPhone
Open Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay > Notifications and adjust the available notification settings. Apple’s iPhone settings guide labels this control “Notifications: Change notification settings.” See Change your Wallet & Apple Pay settings on iPhone.
Change notifications for a specific card
- Open Wallet and select the card.
- Tap More.
- Tap Notifications.
- Turn transaction history and notifications on or off as available.
Card-level options depend on the issuer; transaction features are not identical for every card. Apple describes these controls in its Apple Pay setup and card-notification guidance.

When a transaction notification shows the wrong amount
A recent Wallet transaction can show an authorization amount rather than the final charge. Apple gives a gas-station purchase as an example of a transaction whose initial amount may differ from the amount ultimately charged. Check your card issuer’s statement for the final charge and Apple Pay transactions; Apple explains this in its Apple Pay transaction history guidance.

If a card or setting is missing
- Confirm Apple Pay is available in your country or region using Apple’s Apple Pay participating countries and regions list.
- Check with your card issuer that the card is eligible for Apple Pay. Support depends on participating issuers.
- Make sure you are changing the setting on the device where you want that default. Apple provides separate procedures for iPhone, Apple Watch, Mac, iPad, and Vision Pro; do not assume changing one device changes the others.
- If the menu labels differ, check the instructions for your device’s operating-system version.
