To change the Windows screen size in VirtualBox, install Guest Additions in the Windows virtual machine, enable Auto-resize Guest Display, and then resize the VirtualBox window. Guest Additions provide the Windows display driver that lets the guest operating system respond to changes in the VM window.
You can also choose a fixed resolution from Windows settings, use full-screen mode, or use scaled mode when you only want the picture enlarged without changing Windows’ actual resolution.
Resize Windows automatically when you resize the VirtualBox window
This is usually the best option because Windows adjusts its resolution to match the available VM window.

- Start the Windows virtual machine and sign in.
- In the VirtualBox VM window, select Devices > Insert Guest Additions CD Image.
- Open the CD/DVD drive in Windows. If the installer does not start automatically, run
VBoxWindowsAdditions.exe. - Complete the Guest Additions installation and restart Windows when prompted.
- After Windows restarts, select View > Auto-resize Guest Display. Make sure the option is enabled.
- Drag a corner or edge of the VirtualBox window. The Windows desktop should change resolution to fit the new window size.
Guest Additions are essential for automatic resizing. Without them, enlarging the VM window may only expose more of the existing display, leave the guest centered, or add scroll bars.

Choose a specific Windows resolution
If you need a particular size rather than automatic resizing, set the resolution inside Windows.
Windows 11
- Right-click an empty area of the Windows desktop and select Display settings, or open Start > Settings > System > Display.
- Under Scale & layout, find Display resolution.
- Choose the required resolution, such as 1920 × 1080 or 1280 × 720.
- Select Keep changes if Windows asks you to confirm.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings > System > Display.
- Under Scale and layout, open Display resolution.
- Select a resolution from the list and confirm with Keep changes if prompted.
The resolutions available in Windows depend on the virtual graphics hardware, the VirtualBox display driver, and whether Guest Additions is installed correctly.
Use VirtualBox full-screen mode
Full-screen mode makes the VM use the available area of the physical monitor:

View > Full-screen Mode
The default keyboard shortcut is Host key + F. On most Windows and Linux hosts, the Host key is Right Ctrl. VirtualBox shows the configured Host key in the VM window, so use that value if the shortcut does not work.
Full-screen mode changes how the VM window is displayed. It does not replace Guest Additions. For Windows to change its actual resolution as the display area changes, Guest Additions and Auto-resize Guest Display are still required.
Scaled Mode versus changing the resolution
View > Scaled Mode enlarges or reduces the rendered Windows screen so it fits the VM window. It is useful when you want the whole guest display visible, but it does not necessarily change the resolution configured inside Windows.

The default shortcut for Scaled Mode is Host key + C. If you resize the window while holding Shift, VirtualBox can ignore the guest display’s aspect ratio. That may stretch the image, so use it only when distortion is acceptable.
Fix VirtualBox when Windows does not resize
Auto-resize Guest Display is disabled
Open the running VM’s menu and select View > Auto-resize Guest Display. Then resize the VM window again. This setting affects the running virtual machine, so changing the window size alone is not enough if the option is off.
Guest Additions are missing
Select Devices > Insert Guest Additions CD Image. If Windows does not launch the installer, open the mounted CD/DVD drive and run:

VBoxWindowsAdditions.exe
Restart Windows after the installation. The Extension Pack is not the component that provides normal guest screen resizing; Guest Additions are.
Guest Additions do not match VirtualBox
VirtualBox includes a Guest Additions version intended for the same VirtualBox release. If the host application was upgraded, reinstall or update the additions from the VM menu using Devices > Upgrade Guest Additions…, where that option is available. Restart the guest afterward.

You can mount the ISO manually:
- Open Devices > Optical Drives > Choose/Create a Disk Image.
- In Virtual Media Manager, select Add.
- Browse to
VBoxGuestAdditions.iso. On a Windows host, it is commonly inC:Program FilesOracleVirtualBox. - Add the ISO and attach it to the VM’s optical drive.
- In Windows, open the mounted disc and run
VBoxWindowsAdditions.exe. - Restart the virtual machine.
The resolution cannot exceed the host display
VirtualBox normally limits a Guest Additions-equipped guest to the host screen size in its graphical interface. If you need a larger virtual display, power off the VM and run one of these commands on the host:

VBoxManage setextradata global GUI/MaxGuestResolution 1920x1080

VBoxManage setextradata global GUI/MaxGuestResolution auto
The VBoxManage program is installed with VirtualBox. Run these commands while the virtual machine is powered off, not merely paused or running.

FAQ
Why does my Windows VM screen stay the same size when I enlarge the VirtualBox window?
Guest Additions may not be installed, or Auto-resize Guest Display may be disabled. Install Guest Additions from Devices > Insert Guest Additions CD Image, restart Windows, and enable View > Auto-resize Guest Display.
Do I need the VirtualBox Extension Pack to resize the Windows screen?
No. Normal guest screen resizing is provided by Guest Additions, not the Extension Pack.
Recommended Free Tools
What is the difference between full-screen mode and auto-resize?
Full-screen mode changes the VM window so it occupies the monitor. Auto-resize changes Windows’ guest display resolution to match the available VM window. They can be used together but perform different functions.
Why is the resolution I want missing from Windows Display settings?
The available choices depend on the VirtualBox graphics driver and Guest Additions. Install or update Guest Additions, restart the VM, and check the Display resolution list again.
The Bottom Line
For normal resizing, install Guest Additions, restart Windows, enable View > Auto-resize Guest Display, and drag the VirtualBox window. Use Windows’ Display settings when you need an exact resolution, and use Full-screen Mode or Scaled Mode for presentation rather than resolution changes.
