Godlike.Host offers hosted DayZ servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
Change a DayZ server’s map by editing the template value in the class Missions block of serverDZ.cfg. The value must exactly match a mission-folder name under the server’s mpmissions directory. Stop the server first, back up any save data you care about, then restart it after saving the configuration.
What actually selects the map
DayZ does not normally use a separate “map” switch in the server configuration. The mission template selects the terrain and mission data that load at startup. In the server root, serverDZ.cfg contains a class Missions section with a line similar to:

};The text between the quotation marks is the template name. DayZ looks for a matching mission folder in mpmissions. The match is exact: spelling, punctuation, capitalization and the presence of every character matter. A template that does not correspond to an available mission folder will not load the map you intended.
Bohemia’s documented naming pattern is <MissionName>.<TerrainName>. Stock examples use the dayzOffline mission name followed by a terrain identifier, such as dayzOffline.chernarusplus.

Before you edit the server
Stop the server cleanly
Use your host’s Stop control, service manager or shutdown procedure before opening the configuration. Editing while the process is running can result in the server writing its old settings back when it shuts down. Wait until the control panel reports that the process has stopped rather than merely disconnecting from the game.
Back up the configuration and saves
Download or copy serverDZ.cfg before changing it. Also back up the current save if the existing world matters to your community. A map change can result in a separate save state, and a mistake in the template or mission folder can make the server appear to have lost its world even when the old files still exist.

serverDZ.cfg.before-map-change. - Copy the relevant
mpmissionssave directory to storage outside the live server. - Record the old template value so you can roll back without guessing.
Confirm access to the server root
You need permission to edit the file that the running instance actually reads. Depending on the host, that may be an FTP/SFTP client, a web file manager, a mounted server directory or a local installation. Some providers keep templates or profiles in separate directories, so do not assume that a similarly named example file is active.
Step-by-step: switch to another stock map
- Stop the DayZ server. Confirm that the process has fully stopped.
- Back up the current save and configuration. Preserve the existing
serverDZ.cfgand the current mission data before proceeding. - Open
serverDZ.cfgin the server root. Use a plain-text editor or the host’s configuration editor. Avoid a word processor that can add formatting. - Find
class Missions. Inside that block, locate the line beginning withtemplate =. A valid line ends with a semicolon. - Replace only the quoted template value. For example, change
template = "dayzOffline.chernarusplus";totemplate = "dayzOffline.enoch";. Keep the quotation marks and semicolon. - Save the file in the same location. If you downloaded the file for editing, upload it back to the server root and confirm the upload completed.
- Start the server. Allow the startup process to finish, then join and verify the terrain before inviting players back.
If the old map loads after these steps, the most common explanation is that the edit was made to a copy of serverDZ.cfg that the service does not use. Check the startup configuration, the server root shown by the host and the file’s modification time.

Stock map template values
Use these values exactly as shown. They are mission-template names, not display names:

The installed server files must contain a corresponding mission folder under mpmissions. For example, a Livonia configuration normally requires an mpmissions/dayzOffline.enoch folder. The folder name and the configuration value must be identical.
Example: Chernarus+ to Livonia
With the server stopped, change the active line to:
template = "dayzOffline.enoch";Save, start the server and check the startup log for the mission it initializes. Players without the required Livonia DLC will not be able to join that server, even if the server itself starts correctly.

Example: Livonia back to Chernarus+
Restore the Chernarus template:
template = "dayzOffline.chernarusplus";Do not delete the Livonia data merely to switch back. Keeping a backup gives you a safer path to return to the previous world.
Changing to a custom or community map
Custom terrains generally require more than changing one line. The server must have the mission folder and any map-specific modifications installed, and clients usually need the corresponding Steam Workshop or other required mods.

Verify the mission folder first
- Open the server’s
mpmissionsdirectory. - Identify the exact folder name supplied by the map’s installation instructions.
- Use that exact name as the quoted
templatevalue. - Check that the folder contains the mission files expected by the map author before starting the server.
Community reports describe copying the stock dayzOffline.chernarusplus folder, renaming the copy to a new mission name and pointing template at it. This is a community practice rather than a universally verified installation method; use the map author’s current instructions when they differ. Renaming a folder alone does not install a terrain, its configuration or its required mods.
Install dependencies on both sides
A custom map may require server-side mods, client-side mods, or both. Install the server versions in the host’s mod directory, add the appropriate startup mod parameters if the map documentation requires them, and ensure every player has the same required client content. A missing dependency can produce a startup error, an invisible terrain, a kicked client or a server that stops during mission initialization.

Test with a controlled change
Make the first launch with the server password-protected or otherwise restricted. Confirm that the map loads, spawn points work, objects appear and the server log reports no missing addons. Only then announce the map publicly or restore normal access.
When serverDZ.cfg is missing
Some server downloads do not include serverDZ.cfg. A forum report indicates that the file may need to be created manually in that situation. Before creating one, check the host’s documentation and file manager for an example configuration or a generated copy, because the service may expect a particular path or launch argument.

A syntactically incomplete file can prevent the server from starting. Preserve a copy of the generated file so a host update does not force you to reconstruct it.
Using the -mission= launch parameter
Bohemia’s wiki also documents a -mission= launch parameter that defines the mission. The template line in serverDZ.cfg is the usual approach for a normal installation, but a host or custom startup script may explicitly set -mission=. If the server ignores a correct template value, inspect the launch command or control-panel startup settings for a mission parameter that points somewhere else.

Do not configure conflicting values casually. Establish which setting your host uses, then keep the mission folder and the selected value consistent. After changing a launch parameter, restart the service completely; a control-panel refresh without a process restart will not apply it.

Backups are important because map switching changes which mission data the server opens. Treat each map as a potentially distinct world until you have verified how your host stores it. Do not wipe the old save as a troubleshooting step unless you have a confirmed backup and intend to reset that world.
A search summary has claimed that each map keeps persistence under a path such as mpmissions/<template>/storage_1/, which would allow different maps to retain separate saves. That behavior was not confirmed on a primary documentation page, so do not promise players that switching maps will always preserve or isolate their progress. Check the actual directories and your host’s backup policy, and test with a disposable server if preserving progression is critical.
Troubleshooting a map change
The old map still loads
- Reopen the active file and confirm the new value is inside
class Missions. - Check for a second
serverDZ.cfgin another directory and verify which path the service starts with. - Look for a host control-panel map selector that rewrites the file at startup.
- Inspect the launch command for
-mission=overriding the configuration. - Stop the server, save the file again and perform a full restart rather than a soft reload.
The server fails to start
- Confirm that the edited line includes quotation marks around the template and a trailing semicolon.
- Check that the referenced mission folder exists directly under
mpmissions. - Compare every character in the folder name and template value, including capitalization and periods.
- Restore the backed-up configuration to determine whether the problem is syntax, a missing folder or a dependency.
- Read the startup log for a mission-loading or addon error before making another change.
Players cannot join after the switch
Check DLC ownership first. Livonia requires the Livonia DLC, and Sakhal requires Frostline. For a community map, verify that players have every required mod and that the server is advertising the same mod set it is loading. A server can start successfully while a client lacking paid DLC or a required mod is refused.
The world appears reset
Stop further testing and compare the active mission path with your backup. A different template can open a different save state, making the map look new without deleting the previous files. Restore the original template only after confirming that you have preserved the new files, then ask the host which directories are included in automatic backups.
Host control panels versus manual editing
Hosts expose map changes in different ways. The underlying requirement remains the same: the selected mission must exist and the value must match its folder.

A panel’s friendly map label may not reveal the actual template name. If the panel offers a custom field, enter the mission-folder name rather than the map’s marketing name. If it does not support custom mission folders or mods, manual access or a different hosting arrangement may be necessary.
