Start the dashboard on a different port with hermes dashboard --port <number>. Hermes Agent uses port 9119 by default, so hermes dashboard --port 8080 starts it on 8080 for that run. In Docker, set HERMES_DASHBOARD_PORT and publish the same port from the host to the container. Changing the port does not disable authentication: current documentation says --insecure is a no-op, and any bind address other than 127.0.0.1 requires a password or OAuth provider.
Choose the method that matches your installation
Hermes Agent exposes its web dashboard in two common ways. A direct CLI launch uses a command-line flag; a Docker deployment uses an environment variable plus Docker port publishing. The setting is not interchangeable between those methods.

The current documentation identifies 9119 as the web-server default. A port number is only one part of reachability: the process must listen on that port, and Docker or another network layer must forward traffic to it.
Change the port when running Hermes Agent from the CLI
1. Stop the existing dashboard
If a dashboard is already running, stop that process before starting another one. Otherwise, you can mistake the old listener on 9119 for a failed port change, or receive an “address already in use” error if both launches target the same port.

2. Add the --port flag
Use the documented command form:
hermes dashboard --port <number>For example, to use port 8080:
hermes dashboard --port 8080Replace <number> with the numeric port you intend to use. The flag belongs on the dashboard subcommand; do not place it before hermes or substitute a Docker variable in a CLI launch.
3. Open the dashboard on the new port
Use the same host or address you normally use, but replace 9119 with the selected port. For a local dashboard, that means the URL whose port component is your new value rather than 9119. If you are accessing it through a reverse proxy or another forwarding layer, update that layer to target the new listener as well.
4. Confirm the listener before troubleshooting the browser
A successful launch should leave the Hermes web server listening on the requested port. If the browser cannot connect, first verify that the dashboard process is still running and that the URL contains the new number. Then check whether another service owns the port, whether a firewall or proxy still points at 9119, and whether you accidentally started a second dashboard with the default command.
What happens if port 9119 is already busy?
Port 9119 is the default, not a mandatory value. Choose another unused port and pass it explicitly. A third-party guide uses --port 9120 as an example for a busy 9119, but that number is not an official requirement or a universal replacement.

- Identify a port that is not occupied by another service in the environment where Hermes runs.
- Start Hermes with the chosen value, such as
hermes dashboard --port 9120. - Change the address used by your browser, proxy, firewall rule, or tunnel to the same value.
- If the port is still reported as busy, stop the process currently listening there or select a different unused value.
Do not infer that a successful process start means the dashboard is reachable from every network. Listening locally and being exposed publicly are separate decisions.
Change the port in Docker
Set HERMES_DASHBOARD_PORT
Docker deployments use the HERMES_DASHBOARD_PORT environment variable. The documented default is 9119. Set the variable to the port on which the Hermes dashboard should listen inside the container.
The container configuration must also publish that port. Documentation examples publish the default with:
-p 9119:9119When you change the dashboard port, change the published mapping to match the new value. Conceptually, a move to 8080 requires both the environment setting and a mapping equivalent to -p 8080:8080. Keep the host and container sides aligned for the Hermes configuration you selected.

Example Docker launch pattern
A complete launch contains three pieces: the image and normal Hermes arguments used by your deployment, the environment variable, and the port publication. The relevant fragments look like this:
HERMES_DASHBOARD_PORT=8080
-p 8080:8080Add those fragments using the syntax of your existing Docker command or Compose configuration. The exact image name, volumes, credentials, and other application options are deployment-specific and are not changed by the port setting.

If the container listens on 8080 but Docker still publishes 9119, requests sent to 9119 will not reach the newly configured listener in the way you expect. Conversely, publishing a host port without changing Hermes’ internal port leaves the application listening somewhere else. Check the environment value, the container’s listening port, and the host-to-container publication as one set.

A flag typed at launch is per-run. Current documentation does not establish a Hermes-specific configuration-file or systemd setting that permanently stores the port. If a service manager, script, or Compose file starts Hermes for you, edit that launcher so it supplies the same value on every restart; do not assume that one manual launch changes future launches.

Authentication and network exposure after a port change
Changing the port does not turn security off
Older third-party instructions may tell you to add --insecure when the dashboard is not bound to localhost. Current official documentation says that --insecure is a no-op and does not disable authentication. Do not add it merely because you changed the port or because the dashboard is reachable on another interface.
Localhost versus a public bind
The security boundary is the bind address, not the port number. A service bound to 127.0.0.1 is limited to the local machine. A public bind means any bind address other than 127.0.0.1; current documentation requires an authentication provider for that case. Configure a password or OAuth provider before exposing the dashboard beyond localhost.
- Local-only use: keep the dashboard on a localhost bind and connect from the same machine.
- Remote use: arrange the required password or OAuth authentication, then expose the selected port through only the network path you intend.
- Port change: update firewall, proxy, tunnel, and access-control rules to the new port without weakening authentication.
The June 2026 hardening guidance is why advice that treats --insecure as mandatory is outdated. A different port is not a substitute for authentication, encryption, or network restriction.
How to diagnose a failed port change
The command rejects the option
Check that you used the current spelling, --port, after hermes dashboard. Do not use a similarly named option copied from an older guide. Verify the installed Hermes version’s help output and current documentation if the command still reports an unknown option, because documentation and the software can change.

The launch says the address is already in use
Another process is listening on the selected number, or an earlier Hermes instance is still running. Stop the conflicting process if it is yours, or choose another unused port. The documented CLI form remains the same; 9120 is only an example, not a guaranteed free port.
The browser still opens the old dashboard
You may be connecting to a process that is still listening on 9119. Stop the old instance, confirm the new command actually started, and replace the port in the browser address. In Docker, inspect the published mapping rather than relying only on the environment variable.

- Confirm
HERMES_DASHBOARD_PORTcontains the intended number. - Confirm the container was recreated or restarted with that environment value; editing a file without recreating the container does not alter an already running process.
- Confirm Docker publishes the same host and container port, such as the equivalent of
-p 8080:8080for an 8080 configuration. - Use the published host port in the browser, not an internal-only container port.
Remote access fails while local access works
That symptom points to binding, authentication, or network policy rather than the numeric port alone. Check whether Hermes is bound to 127.0.0.1, whether your proxy or firewall forwards the new port, and whether the required password or OAuth provider is configured for a non-local bind. Do not try to solve an authentication failure with --insecure; current documentation says it has no effect.
A restart returns to 9119
The port flag is per-run, and the Docker variable applies to the container configuration that includes it. Find the command, service definition, script, or Compose configuration that performs the restart and add the same setting there. Hermes’ current documentation does not verify a separate configuration-file or systemd persistence mechanism, so avoid assuming that an undocumented file will be read.
Safe change procedure
- Record the current deployment: determine whether Hermes is launched directly or in Docker, and note the current bind address and any proxy or firewall in front of it.
- Select an unused port: retain 9119 if it is available, or choose another number such as the 9120 example when you have confirmed it is free.
- Apply the correct setting: use
hermes dashboard --port <number>for CLI, or setHERMES_DASHBOARD_PORTand matching Docker publication for a container. - Restart the actual launcher: stop the old process or recreate the container so only the intended listener remains.
- Update access paths: change the browser URL and any proxy, firewall, tunnel, health check, or documentation that still names 9119.
- Test locally first: confirm the dashboard responds on the new port from the machine running Hermes.
- Test remote access only when needed: verify the bind and authentication requirements before allowing connections from other hosts.
- Make the setting repeatable: place the flag or environment variable in the launcher that performs future starts, while recognizing that the official documentation does not specify a universal persistence file.
Port-change checklist
- The CLI uses
--port, not a different option name. - 9119 is the documented default.
- Docker uses
HERMES_DASHBOARD_PORT. - Docker’s published host and container ports match the selected Hermes port in the documented pattern.
- The browser, proxy, firewall, and tunnel all use the new externally reachable port.
- No older Hermes process is still serving the default port.
- A non-
127.0.0.1bind has a password or OAuth provider configured. --insecurehas not been added on the assumption that it disables authentication; current docs describe it as a no-op.- The recurring launcher contains the setting, because a one-time CLI flag does not automatically persist.
What the port setting does—and does not—change
The setting chooses the TCP port where the Hermes web server listens. It does not, by itself, change the bind address, create authentication credentials, configure TLS, open a firewall, update a reverse proxy, or make a Docker container reachable from the host. Those layers must be configured separately according to your deployment.
For a local CLI session, the smallest change is therefore one flag: hermes dashboard --port 8080. For Docker, the smallest reliable change is a coordinated pair: set HERMES_DASHBOARD_PORT and publish the corresponding port. In both cases, keep authentication enabled whenever the dashboard is exposed beyond localhost.
