There are two reliable ways to change a Minecraft server’s difficulty. Run /difficulty peaceful, /difficulty easy, /difficulty normal, or /difficulty hard as an operator (or use the server console) for an immediate change. To make the setting persist when the server starts, edit the difficulty= line in server.properties, then restart the server or apply the file with /reload where supported.

Modern servers use the four names rather than numeric values. A command changes the running world now, while the property file is the startup setting that can restore a different value after a restart.

Choose the right method first

Use the command when you need the change to take effect immediately and you have operator or console access. Use server.properties when the setting must survive restarts, automated server updates, or a hosting-panel reboot. Many administrators use both: issue the command to change the live server, then write the same value to the property file so the next restart does not undo it.

Method When it takes effect What access you need Will it persist after a restart?
/difficulty command Immediately in the running server Operator status (commonly permission level 2) or console access Not necessarily; the startup value can be read again from server.properties
server.properties On the next server start; /reload may apply it without a full restart Filesystem, hosting-panel, or container access to the server files Yes, as long as the file remains unchanged

Difficulty values you can use

The current names are:

Value Meaning in the setting Modern command example
peaceful Peaceful difficulty /difficulty peaceful
easy Easy difficulty /difficulty easy
normal Normal difficulty /difficulty normal
hard Hard difficulty /difficulty hard

The Minecraft Wiki’s server.properties reference lists difficulty=easy as the default. Older tutorials sometimes show numbers: 0 for peaceful, 1 for easy, 2 for normal, and 3 for hard. Those numbers are legacy guidance. For a current server, use the names exactly as shown above. One hosting guide reports that a legacy number can be converted to its name, but relying on that behavior can make a version migration harder to diagnose.

Method 1: Change difficulty with the command

Run it from in-game chat

  1. Join the server with an account that has operator privileges.
  2. Open chat and enter one of the four commands, including the leading slash. For example, type /difficulty hard.
  3. Submit the command and wait for the server’s confirmation or error message.
  4. Check the live setting with /difficulty if your server version accepts the command without a value, or use the server’s command feedback to confirm the value you entered.

The command requires administrative permission. One guide specifies permission level 2; other documentation describes the requirement more generally as being an operator. If a regular player receives an unknown-command or permission error, ask an existing operator to grant the required status or use the console instead.

Run it from the server console

  1. Open the console supplied by your host, control panel, terminal wrapper, or server process.
  2. Enter the command without the slash: difficulty hard.
  3. Submit it and read the console response.
  4. Have a player reconnect or check the server’s command feedback if you need to confirm that the live world accepted the change.

The slash is chat notation. In a console, difficulty hard is the appropriate form; entering /difficulty hard may be rejected by some console interfaces.

What the command changes

/difficulty changes the difficulty of the running server immediately. It is useful for a temporary event, a test session, or a quick response when players are already online. It does not edit the text in server.properties for you. If the server reads a different value from that file during a later start, the live change can be lost.

Method 2: Change server.properties

Find the file

server.properties is in the server’s main data directory, alongside the files used to launch and store the world. On a hosted server, open the file manager or configuration editor provided by the panel. On a self-managed server, open the file in a text editor on the machine that runs the server. Make a backup copy before editing so you can restore the previous configuration if another setting is accidentally changed.

Edit the difficulty line

  1. Stop the server if your host’s editor requires the server to be offline, or follow the panel’s documented configuration-editing workflow.
  2. Open server.properties as plain text.
  3. Locate the line that begins with difficulty=.
  4. Replace the value with one modern name, such as difficulty=normal or difficulty=hard.
  5. Save the file without changing the key name.
  6. Start or restart the server so it reads the new startup value.

Do not write a command into the property file. The file needs the key-value form difficulty=hard; the chat form /difficulty hard belongs in chat or the command console.

Apply the edit with a restart

A restart is the clearest way to apply a property-file change. Stop the server cleanly, allow the process to finish writing its data, and start it again. Once players can connect, verify the setting rather than assuming that a successful boot means every edited line was accepted. If the server starts with a syntax or configuration error, stop it, restore the backup, and reapply only the difficulty change.

Apply the edit with /reload

The Minecraft Wiki reference describes /reload as an option for applying server.properties changes without a full restart. Availability and behavior can vary by release and server implementation, so treat it as a convenience rather than a guarantee. Run the reload from an authorized in-game account or the console, watch for errors, and verify the resulting difficulty. If the value does not change, perform a complete restart.

Making a live change permanent

If you use the command first, also update the property file. For example, after running /difficulty peaceful, set the file line to difficulty=peaceful. Otherwise, a restart can load the old value from server.properties. Conversely, editing only the file does not necessarily alter a currently running world until the server is restarted or successfully reloaded.

  1. Decide on the final value: peaceful, easy, normal, or hard.
  2. Set that value with /difficulty value if players need the change immediately.
  3. Set the identical value after difficulty= in server.properties.
  4. Reload or restart and verify once more.

Troubleshooting a difficulty change

“You do not have permission” or the command does nothing

Use an operator account or the console. The documented threshold is commonly permission level 2, although guides also describe the requirement simply as operator access. A player who can build or use ordinary commands is not automatically authorized to change server difficulty. If the command works in the console but not in chat, the issue is the player’s permission level rather than the difficulty value.

“Unknown command” or an invalid-value error

Use one of the four modern names and check the spelling: peaceful, easy, normal, or hard. In chat, include the slash; in the console, omit it. Replace old numeric examples with names when following a current guide. If a number appears to work on one installation, do not assume another server release will accept it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The setting changes, then reverts after a reboot

This is the expected symptom when the live command changed the running server but the property file still contains the previous value. Open server.properties, make the value match the desired difficulty, save it, and restart or reload. Also check that you edited the active server’s file rather than a similarly named backup or an unused panel configuration.

The file edit is not taking effect

  • Confirm the line is exactly a valid key-value entry such as difficulty=hard.
  • Confirm the file was saved in the server directory that is actually launched.
  • Restart the server; a normal file save alone does not change a running process.
  • If you used /reload, inspect the console for an error and fall back to a full restart if the value remains unchanged.
  • After startup, verify the live setting with the command or server feedback.

A difficulty lock appears to block the command

Documentation conflicts about difficulty-locked=true. One hosting knowledgebase says this key disables in-game /difficulty. Another error guide says the lock does not prevent the command and describes the lock as a per-world flag stored in level.dat, rather than a normal server.properties key. The official wiki reference does not settle the conflict. Treat the lock behavior as version-dependent: check the documentation for the exact server release, inspect the startup log and configuration, and test on a copy of the world before changing a production server. Do not add or remove a lock key solely because an older tutorial mentions it.

You are following an old numeric tutorial

Translate the documented legacy mapping—0 peaceful, 1 easy, 2 normal, 3 hard—to the modern name before editing. Name-based values are the clearest choice for current releases and make the configuration self-explanatory. If a hosting panel automatically converts a number, confirm the resulting text in server.properties after saving.

Recommended procedure for a hosted server

Hosting panels differ, but the underlying sequence is the same. Use the panel’s console for an immediate change and its file manager for persistence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Record the current value and make a configuration backup.
  2. Open the panel console and enter, for example, difficulty normal.
  3. Open the configuration editor and locate difficulty=.
  4. Set it to difficulty=normal and save.
  5. Use the panel’s restart control, or run reload if the server and release support applying the file without a restart.
  6. Check the console and verify the live difficulty after the server is online.

If the panel labels the file as a “server configuration” rather than showing the filename, look for the setting whose key is difficulty. Do not confuse a world-management option or a game-rule editor with the server property itself.

Recommended procedure for a self-hosted server

  1. Identify the directory from which the server process is launched; that is normally where its active configuration is read.
  2. Back up server.properties.
  3. Use the console command difficulty hard for an immediate change, if required.
  4. Open the active server.properties and set difficulty=hard.
  5. Restart the server cleanly, or test reload and verify its result.
  6. Keep the edited file with the server backup so a restore does not silently reintroduce a different difficulty.

Operational checklist

  • Use a current name: peaceful, easy, normal, or hard.
  • Use a leading slash only in in-game chat.
  • Use operator access or the console for the command.
  • Remember that a command is immediate but may not persist.
  • Set difficulty= in server.properties for the startup value.
  • Restart, or use /reload/reload only when supported and then verify.
  • Back up the file before editing.
  • Treat difficulty-locked=true behavior as unverified until confirmed for the target version.

Which option should you use?

Choose the command when speed matters

Use /difficulty when players are online and the change must happen now. It avoids opening files and is easy to reverse by issuing another valid value. Plan a matching file edit if the change is intended to last.

Choose server.properties when consistency matters

Use the property file when the difficulty is part of the server’s normal configuration. It provides a visible startup value for administrators and prevents a restart from restoring an unintended setting. A restart or successful reload is still required before a running process uses the edit.

Use both for planned changes

For a scheduled event or migration, set the live value with the command, update server.properties, and verify after the next restart. This sequence gives players immediate feedback while preserving the intended configuration.
