Apple Maps does not have its own voice picker. The voice used for turn-by-turn directions comes from Siri, so you change it in Settings, not in the Maps app.
On current iPhone software, including iOS 26, you can also change the Maps guidance volume, mute behavior, and whether directions interrupt other audio from the Maps settings.
Change the Apple Maps voice
- Open Settings on your iPhone.
- Tap Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri. The wording depends on your iOS version.
- Tap Voice. Older iOS versions may call this option Siri Voice.
- Choose a language variety or voice.
- Tap the available voices to preview them, then leave the voice you want selected.
Start a new Apple Maps route after changing the setting. Maps should use the selected Siri voice for its spoken directions.
This setting applies to more than Maps. It also changes the voice Siri uses when answering questions and responding to commands. The available voices depend on your selected language, country, and region.

Change the language Apple Maps speaks
To make Apple Maps give directions in another language:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri.
- Tap Language.
- Select the language you want Siri and spoken Maps directions to use.
Changing the language can also change the available voice varieties. It changes Siri’s language throughout the iPhone, not just navigation.
Change the Maps voice volume or mute directions
You can control whether Maps speaks every turn while a route is active:

- Tap Go to start navigation.
- Tap the Audio Control button on the map. Its icon resembles a speaker.
- Choose the setting you need.

The labels can differ slightly between the iPhone Maps app and CarPlay, but the controls perform the same basic functions.

Set the default Apple Maps navigation volume
To change the default volume before you begin a route:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Tap Maps.
- Tap Spoken Directions.
- Under Voice Volume, select the volume you want.
This screen also contains several audio and display options:
- Directions Pause Spoken Audio: Temporarily pauses podcasts, audiobooks, and similar audio while Maps speaks.
- Directions Wake Device: Wakes the iPhone display when spoken directions arrive during driving or cycling navigation.
- Directions on Radio: Sends spoken directions through the vehicle’s radio in supported cars.
Use a different voice with Apple Maps in CarPlay
CarPlay uses the Siri voice settings from the connected iPhone. Change the voice on the iPhone using:

After selecting a voice, disconnect and reconnect CarPlay, or restart the CarPlay session if the old voice continues playing.
To change whether directions are spoken through CarPlay:
- Start a route in Maps on the CarPlay screen.
- Tap the Volume button.
- Choose Mute, Alerts Only, or the full-guidance option.
Why Apple Maps is not speaking
The route has not started
Spoken turn-by-turn directions begin only after you start navigation. If Maps shows Steps instead of Go, the route may have been planned from a location other than My Location. Start a route from your current location and tap Go.
Directions are muted or set to alerts only
During navigation, tap the Audio Control button and select Unmuted or All Directions. The Muted option suppresses every instruction, while Alerts Only does not announce every turn.

The navigation volume is too low
Check both volume controls:
- With a route actively speaking, press the iPhone’s volume-up button.
- Open the Maps Audio Control menu and choose Louder.
- Check Settings > Apps > Maps > Spoken Directions > Voice Volume.
The correct volume can depend on where the audio is being sent.
Directions are playing through another device
In a car, Maps may send audio through CarPlay, Bluetooth, or the vehicle’s radio instead of the iPhone speaker. If your car supports it, check Settings > Apps > Maps > Spoken Directions > Directions on Radio.
Location or internet access is unavailable
Apple’s turn-by-turn spoken directions require an active internet connection, Precise Location, and a supported country or region. Check these settings:

- Confirm that Location Services is enabled.
- Make sure Maps has permission to use your location.
- Enable Precise Location for Maps if that option is available.
Spoken turn-by-turn directions are not available in every country or region, and support can vary by travel mode, including driving, walking, cycling, and transit.

Common instructions that no longer match iPhone settings
- Settings > Maps > Navigation & Guidance is not the current iOS 26 path. Use Settings > Apps > Maps > Spoken Directions for Maps audio controls.
- There is no independent voice library inside Apple Maps. Select the voice under Settings > Siri or Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri.
- The Maps volume button changes loudness or muting; it does not select a different voice.
- A route preview is not necessarily spoken navigation. If the route starts somewhere other than My Location, Maps may show steps without providing spoken directions.
FAQ
Can I change the Apple Maps voice without changing Siri’s voice?
No. Apple Maps uses Siri’s voice settings, so changing the Maps voice also changes the voice Siri uses elsewhere on the iPhone.
Where is the Apple Maps voice setting?
Go to Settings, tap Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri, and then tap Voice. The Maps app does not contain a separate voice selector.

Why does Apple Maps show directions but not speak them?

Does changing the Siri voice change CarPlay directions?
