To change a running Nitrox server from another mode to Creative, join as an administrator, press Y to open chat, and run /changeservergamemode creative. If you manage the server through a hosting panel instead, stop the server, set Game Mode to Creative in Startup or the main configuration editor, save, and start the server again.
Choose the method that matches your access
Nitrox offers two practical ways to change the server mode. The in-game command is the quickest option when you already have administrator privileges on the server. The hosting-panel method is appropriate when you control the server through a provider dashboard or cannot use an administrator account in-game.

Do not use both methods at the same time. If you change the value in a panel while the server is running, the active process may continue using its previous configuration. Stop it first, edit the value, and start it again.
What Creative mode does on Nitrox
The documented description of Creative mode is building and exploration without resource limitations. This is useful for construction projects, map tours, testing bases, or a server where gathering materials is not part of the experience. It changes the rules for the server rather than only changing one player’s personal setting, so agree on the change with anyone who shares the world.

Nitrox documentation also identifies three other accepted mode values:

Use the lowercase values exactly as shown when entering the command. The panel normally presents names such as Creative in a selector, so you do not need to type the value there.

Change the mode from in-game chat
This route changes the server while you are connected. It requires administrator access; an ordinary player should not be able to apply a server-wide mode change.
1. Connect with an administrator account
Start Nitrox, connect to the relevant server, and make sure the account or player identity you are using has administrator permission. If you can join but do not have that permission, the command may be rejected even though chat itself works.
2. Open the Nitrox chat window
Press Y. This opens the Nitrox chat interface where server commands can be entered. Click or focus the chat input if necessary so that your keystrokes are entered as text rather than affecting the game.

3. Enter the Creative command
Type the following command, including the leading slash and the space between the command name and the mode value:
/changeservergamemode creative
Submit the message. Do not add quotation marks, a hyphen, or a second mode name.
4. Check the result
Look for the server’s response or test a rule that distinguishes Creative from Survival, such as beginning a build that would normally require gathered resources. The cited command instructions document the administrator context and syntax, but they do not establish a universal reconnect requirement. Have players reconnect or verify the new rules if the server does not immediately reflect the change for everyone.
5. Tell connected players what changed
Because this is a server-wide rule change, let players know before they continue building or gathering. A player who is still seeing old behavior may need to leave and rejoin, or the server may need to be restarted through its panel, depending on the Nitrox version and hosting setup.
Change the mode in a hosting control panel
Panel labels vary. One provider’s instructions place the setting under Startup; other documented panels use Configuration Files followed by the main configuration editor. The important sequence is the same: stop, edit, save, start.

1. Sign in to the server panel
Open the control panel for the Nitrox instance and sign in with an account that can stop the server and edit its startup or configuration settings. A player account inside Nitrox is not enough for this route.
2. Stop the server completely
Use the panel’s Stop control and wait until the status shows that the process has ended. Do not edit the game-mode value while the server is still running. Stopping first prevents the active process from continuing with an old value and gives the panel a clean point at which to write the configuration.
3. Open the relevant configuration area
Use the path that your provider exposes:
- Startup: some panels place the game settings directly on the startup page.
- Configuration Files: other panels require you to open this section and then choose the main configuration editor.
If you see several files, use the main server configuration editor rather than an unrelated log, backup, or player-data file. The documented workflows identify the setting by the label Game Mode.
4. Set Game Mode to Creative
Find Game Mode under the game settings. Select Creative from the available choices. Do not confuse this with a per-player option or a graphical setting in the game client; it is the server’s game-mode value.
5. Save the configuration
Click the panel’s Save, Apply, or equivalent control and wait for the confirmation. Leaving the page without saving will discard the change, even if the selector still displays Creative temporarily.

6. Start the server again
Use Start and wait for the server to finish coming online. Players should connect only after the server reports that it is running. If the panel has a console or status view, check that startup completed without a configuration error.
7. Verify from a client
Join the server and test the Creative behavior. If the old rules remain, stop the server and inspect the saved Game Mode value again. A running instance can retain the previous setting until it is restarted, which is why the stop-edit-save-start sequence matters for panel changes.
How to change back to another mode
The same in-game command accepts the other documented values. An administrator can replace creative with one of the following:

For a panel-managed server, stop the instance, choose the corresponding mode from Game Mode, save, and start it again. Tell players which rules will apply before they reconnect. The command documentation lists the accepted values, but it does not describe additional custom mode names; do not assume that an arbitrary word will work.

The command is rejected
First check administrator permission. The command route is documented for an administrator, so being able to enter chat does not prove that your account can change server settings. Next, confirm the spelling, slash, spaces, and lowercase value:

/changeservergamemode creative
Use the server’s /help output to see which commands your current version exposes. Nitrox syntax and permission behavior can change between releases, and the available documentation does not provide a current, version-pinned official command reference.
The command appears to run, but the rules do not change
Verify that you changed the intended server and that the response came from that server rather than a local chat message. Ask a player to reconnect or test again after leaving and rejoining. If the behavior still does not change, use the hosting-panel route: stop the server, set Game Mode to Creative, save, and start it.
The panel still shows the old value
Make sure the server was stopped before editing and that you clicked the panel’s save or apply control. Some interfaces display unsaved changes until you leave the page, which can make it appear that the value was stored when it was not. Reopen the configuration editor after saving to confirm that Creative is still selected.
The server will not start after saving
Stop any repeated restart attempts and reopen the main configuration editor. Check that the mode is selected from the panel’s list rather than entered with extra punctuation or spaces. If the panel provides a startup console, read the first configuration error shown there. Restore the previously working mode if necessary, save, and start once to confirm that the server itself is healthy before trying Creative again.
Players report different behavior
Ask every player to confirm the server address and reconnect to the same instance. A player connected to a different server, an old session, or a server that has not restarted can experience different rules. The command documentation does not require a universal reconnect, so treat reconnecting as a verification step rather than an unconditional rule.
The Game Mode field is missing
Check both documented panel locations: Startup, and Configuration Files followed by the main configuration editor. If neither location contains the field, the provider may use a different interface or a different Nitrox package. Use the panel’s help or support documentation for that installation, and use the in-game command only if you have administrator permission.

Version and permission cautions
Nitrox is an open-source multiplayer modification for Subnautica with a documentation ecosystem that can change as releases evolve. The command syntax and permission behavior described here are documented, but there is no current, version-pinned official command reference in the available material. After a Nitrox update, run /help in the server chat and confirm that changeservergamemode is available before relying on an older procedure.
Keep the distinction between access types clear:
- Administrator access: lets you attempt the in-game command while connected.
- Hosting-panel access: lets you stop, edit, save, and start the server even when you cannot use an in-game administrator account.
- Ordinary player access: lets you play, but does not establish permission to change a server-wide mode.
If neither administrator permission nor panel access is available, you cannot reliably change the server mode yourself. Ask the server owner or operator to perform one of the two procedures.
