To capture an entire web page, use the browser’s built-in full-page command rather than taking several viewport screenshots. Chrome and Firefox can save a full-page image from Developer Tools, Edge has a Capture full page command, Safari on iPhone offers Full Page, and Android 12 or later provides a scrolling-capture control on most scrollable screens.
Let the page finish loading first, especially images and embedded content. Then check the result for sticky headers, chat bubbles, animations, and nested scroll areas: these are the common reasons a “full-page” image is incomplete or overlapped.
What a scrolling screenshot actually captures
A normal screenshot records only the pixels currently visible in the viewport. A scrolling, full-page screenshot captures the document beyond that viewport and joins it into one image (or, on some phones, a PDF).
The distinction matters on modern sites. A page can contain a long document, a fixed navigation bar, a chat widget, and a separate panel with its own scrollbar. Browser full-page tools usually capture the document itself; they do not automatically expand every nested scroll container. If a table, dashboard, or modal has its own scrollbar, you may need to capture that element separately or use a viewport image after scrolling it into view.

Capture a full page in Chrome on Windows, Linux, or macOS
- Open the page and wait for the initial layout, images, and embeds to finish loading. Scroll through important sections once if the site loads content only when it enters view.
- Open Developer Tools with F12, or use the browser menu’s More tools → Developer tools.
- Open the DevTools command menu. Use Ctrl + Shift + P on Windows or Linux, or Command + Shift + P on macOS.
- Type Capture full size screenshot and select that command. Chrome captures the whole document, including content outside the visible viewport.
- Open the downloaded PNG and inspect the top, middle, and bottom. If a fixed header appears repeatedly or a chat panel covers text, recapture after hiding that element or use a narrower element/viewport capture.
Chrome’s command menu also exposes narrower capture modes. Use an element capture when the useful content is a card, article, or table rather than the entire document.

Capture an entire page in Firefox
Use the screenshot button
- Open Developer Tools.
- Open Developer Tools Settings and find Available Toolbox Buttons.
- Enable Take a screenshot of the entire page.
- Click the new screenshot button in the toolbox. Firefox saves the full-page image to your Downloads folder.
Use the Web Console command
- Open the Web Console from Developer Tools.
- Run
screenshot page.png --fullpageand press Enter. - Locate
page.pngin the download location and verify that lazy content and the page footer are present.
The command is useful when you want a predictable filename or a repeatable manual workflow. Firefox also provides viewport and selected-element screenshot modes for pages whose full document contains an unusable overlay or an independently scrolling panel.
Capture a full page in Microsoft Edge
- Open the target webpage and wait for content to settle.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + S.
- Choose Capture full page.
- Review the resulting long image, then save it or copy it from the capture controls.
Edge’s command captures areas that would normally require scrolling in one operation. If the page uses a sticky toolbar, inspect the joins before sharing the image.
Take a scrolling screenshot on iPhone in Safari
- Open the webpage in Safari.
- Take a normal screenshot: press the Side button and Volume Up on Face ID models, or the Side button and Home button on models with a Home button.
- Tap the screenshot preview that appears in the lower-left corner.
- Select Full Page at the top of the editor.
- Review the long capture and crop it if necessary. Choose Save to Photos for an image, or Save PDF to Files for a document-style copy.
PDF is often easier to read, print, or send when the page is extremely tall. An image is more convenient when you need to place the capture in a design, issue, or chat.

- Open the scrollable screen or webpage.
- Take a normal screenshot using your device’s hardware shortcut.
- When the screenshot toolbar appears, tap the scrolling-capture control (the label and icon vary by manufacturer).
- Continue until the required content is included, then stop and save.
Google documents this workflow for Android 12 and later on most screens that allow scrolling. Android manufacturers can change the button name, position, maximum height, and file format, so a missing scrolling control usually means that the current screen or device firmware does not support it.

Prepare the page before capturing
Finish lazy loading
Many pages request images, charts, and video posters only as they approach the viewport. Scroll through the important sections once, wait for placeholders to resolve, and then return to the top before starting a full-page capture. A screenshot taken too early can contain blank cards even though the page eventually loads them.
Stop movement
Pause carousels, animated charts, and video where possible. A capture can otherwise join different animation frames, producing a jump or a half-rendered component. If a page offers a reduced-motion setting, enable it temporarily.
Account for fixed elements
Sticky headers, cookie notices, floating support buttons, and chat widgets may be painted over every segment of a long image. Dismiss or hide them before capture. If you cannot remove one, capture the article or content element instead of the entire document.

Dashboards, code editors, comment lists, and product tables often scroll inside a fixed-height box. A document-level capture may include only the box’s visible rows. Scroll that container separately and capture the element or viewport, or export the data from the application when an exact record is required.

When a full-page result is wrong
Overlapping or duplicated headers
A fixed header can be repeated at every stitched segment. Hide the header with the site’s own control, temporarily disable it in DevTools, or use an element capture that excludes the fixed layer.
Blank images or missing embeds
Reload, wait for network activity to stop, and scroll through the page to trigger lazy loading. Some cross-origin embeds, protected video players, and bot checks do not render in a screenshot context; capture the surrounding content or use the service’s export feature instead.
Very tall pages
A huge image is difficult to open, review, and send. Crop to the relevant section, divide the page into logical captures, or choose Safari’s PDF export when the reader needs a document rather than a single bitmap.

Responsive breakpoints can change when DevTools is docked or when a phone is rotated. Set the intended viewport first, then capture. Compare the saved width with the width you want readers to see.

Can I capture a page that requires a login?
A browser can capture content available in its current authenticated session. For automated work, pass authorized cookies, headers, or an Authorization value through a service that supports them, and never expose those credentials in a public URL or client-side script.
How do I preserve the exact mobile layout in a desktop workflow?
Set the capture viewport or device preset to the target mobile dimensions before loading the page, then wait for responsive content and lazy images to settle. A desktop-width capture cannot reliably represent a mobile breakpoint.
What should I verify before using a long screenshot as evidence?
Check that the URL, page state, timestamp-sensitive content, top and bottom sections, and any independently scrolling panels are visible and readable. Keep the original file so later cropping does not remove context.
