For an easy, versatile Astarion build, keep him as a Dexterity-focused Rogue and choose Sleight of Hand and Stealth for his core skills. At level 3, pick Arcane Trickster for spell utility, Thief for bonus-action flexibility, or Assassin for a stealth-opening focus. If you want a more specialized combat plan, a Patch 8-era guide recommends Gloom Stalker Ranger 5 / Assassin Rogue 7; it is an option, not a requirement.

The important decision is not finding one mathematically mandatory setup. It is deciding what you need Astarion to do in your party: scout ahead, open locks, disarm traps, lead conversations, notice hidden details, contribute spell utility, or start fights from concealment. Once that role is clear, his class, skills, subclass, level order, and equipment are much easier to choose.

What Astarion is by default—and what to build around

Astarion is a High Elf Rogue with the Charlatan background. His displayed ability scores before recruitment are Strength 8, Dexterity 17, Constitution 14, Intelligence 12, Wisdom 13, and Charisma 10. After recruitment, he returns to level 1 with standard Rogue ability scores, and his default level-3 subclass is Arcane Trickster. Those pre-recruitment numbers and his recruitable state are not the same thing, so do not treat the former as a fixed build that cannot be changed. BG3 Wiki’s Astarion reference lists his companion details.

This distinction matters when you are planning from a character preview or an early encounter. The numbers shown before he joins are not a promise that every later version of Astarion must use exactly that spread. Once he is a recruited companion, you are dealing with a level-1 Rogue that can be developed around your party and, if you choose, redirected into another class path. In other words, plan around his Rogue identity and Dexterity role, but do not assume his initial presentation removes your ability to make choices.

For a first playthrough, the simplest plan is to retain his Rogue class, make Dexterity the priority, and choose skills that solve problems your other party members cannot. Rogue’s primary ability is Dexterity, and the class’s weapon proficiencies include simple weapons, hand crossbows, longswords, rapiers, and shortswords, as well as light armor. The Rogue class reference covers its proficiencies and starting kit.

That class identity gives you a clear baseline. You do not need to multiclass merely because a specialized guide exists, and you do not need to replace his default subclass to make him useful. A single-class Rogue is the easiest route to understand while you learn the game, and its utility remains relevant whenever the party encounters a locked container, a trap, a suspicious hallway, or a stealth approach.

This build suits Astarion’s out-of-combat role as well as his combat role: Stealth helps him scout and approach unseen, while Sleight of Hand supports lock picking and trap handling. Your exact skill choices should reflect party coverage, not a supposed mandatory formula.

Start by deciding what you want Astarion to do

Before selecting a subclass or changing his class, identify the jobs you expect him to perform. This prevents a common mistake: choosing a build because it is popular, then discovering that it duplicates another companion or requires encounter setup you rarely use.

  • Scout and infiltrator: Stealth is the natural fit when you want Astarion to move ahead, inspect an area, and approach from concealment.
  • Lock and trap specialist: Sleight of Hand supports the practical tasks most players associate with a classic rogue.
  • Party speaker: Persuasion is worth considering when Astarion frequently leads dialogue. The cited Ranger / Rogue guide includes Persuasion in its own skill recommendations.
  • Lookout: Perception is a sensible alternative if the rest of the party lacks a character who notices things during exploration.
  • Investigator or deceiver: Investigation and Deception are available Rogue choices when they better match your party’s exploration or conversation plan.

These roles can overlap. Astarion can scout while also handling locks, or lead a conversation after sneaking into position. The point is to spend his proficiency choices where they add coverage. If another companion already handles every Dexterity-based exploration task, you may prefer a dialogue-oriented choice; if nobody can reliably deal with locks and traps, Sleight of Hand becomes more valuable.

Choose a build path that matches your playstyle

Build Best fit What to consider
Rogue 12, subclass to taste A straightforward companion build with Rogue utility throughout the campaign. Easy to understand and level. It does not follow the cited Ranger multiclass’s front-loaded martial attack progression. The sources do not provide a complete level-by-level Rogue 12 plan.
Gloom Stalker Ranger 5 / Assassin Rogue 7 A more specialized plan built around stealth openings, initiative, and reaching Extra Attack after Ranger 5. It asks you to manage multiclass progression and, where practical, begin encounters from stealth. Results depend on encounter setup, party composition, difficulty, and available items.
Arcane Trickster, Assassin, or Thief Arcane Trickster for spell utility; Assassin for a stealth-opening emphasis; Thief for bonus-action flexibility. Choose the feature set that fits how you play. The available sources do not establish one subclass as universally best.

The Gloom Stalker / Assassin progression is a specific build guide’s recommendation, not a general requirement for Astarion. It is framed for Patch 8 and beyond by PC Gamer’s Baldur’s Gate 3 build guide. No comparative damage testing is established here, so the table describes what each path emphasizes rather than ranking damage.

How to compare the paths

  1. How easy is it to level? Rogue 12 is the least complicated. You continue in one class and make the subclass decision once. The Ranger / Rogue plan asks you to follow a deliberate order so its key break point arrives at Ranger 5.
  2. How much out-of-combat utility do you want? Any Rogue-based plan can support scouting, locks, and traps through Dexterity skills. Arcane Trickster adds a spell-utility angle, while multiclassing changes the balance of your progression.
  3. How often can you begin from stealth? Assassin and Gloom Stalker are most aligned with a stealth-opening plan. If your group usually walks directly into combat or cannot control engagement distance, that emphasis may be less convenient.
  4. Do you want a different attack cadence? The cited multiclass reaches Extra Attack after Ranger 5. A single-class Rogue is a simpler thematic route, but the sources do not provide a complete level-by-level comparison of its attacks.
  5. Does the party need another Dexterity specialist? If nobody else can cover locks, traps, scouting, or perception checks, keeping Astarion as a Rogue gives the party dependable coverage. If those jobs are already covered, choose skills and a subclass that add something distinct.

Pick skills for the party you actually have

Rogues choose four skill proficiencies from a list that includes Sleight of Hand, Stealth, Perception, Deception, Investigation, and Persuasion. For Astarion, a useful starting pair is Sleight of Hand and Stealth: one supports locks and traps, the other scouting and infiltration. These recommendations are practical role choices, not a claim that only one combination works. The Rogue reference lists the available skills.

  • Take Persuasion if Astarion often leads conversations and you want his skill choices to support that party role. The cited Ranger / Rogue guide also recommends Persuasion alongside Sleight of Hand.
  • Take Perception if your group needs another character to notice things while exploring.
  • Consider Deception or Investigation if those better match your party’s dialogue or exploration needs.

Rogue offers four choices, so the pair above does not fill every proficiency slot. Make the remaining selections based on what your other companions can cover and which checks you want Astarion to handle. Skill proficiency is a party-planning choice, not a substitute for Dexterity as his core ability.

A useful way to make the choice is to list your party’s existing proficiencies before you commit. If another character is already your designated speaker, Persuasion may be less urgent. If another character is your scout but cannot handle locks, keep Sleight of Hand. If the party repeatedly misses things while exploring, Perception may contribute more than a second dialogue skill. None of these choices changes the fact that Dexterity remains the Rogue’s primary ability.

Choose a Rogue subclass at level 3

Astarion defaults to Arcane Trickster at level 3. That is a reasonable choice if you want spell utility in addition to Rogue abilities. If you prefer a more direct specialization, consider the alternatives below; the right fit depends on whether you value magic, flexible bonus actions, or a stealth-focused opening.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Arcane Trickster: retain the default

Choose Arcane Trickster if you want Astarion’s Rogue progression to include spell utility. It keeps the build close to his default and avoids multiclass planning. The sources establish his default subclass, but do not provide a spell-by-spell setup; choose spells in light of what your party already does rather than assuming a fixed list is required.

This route is particularly approachable when you want Astarion to remain recognizable as a Rogue while giving him another way to contribute. It also avoids asking you to plan around a particular encounter opener. You can still use Stealth and Sleight of Hand as his core skills, then let the rest of the party determine which kinds of spell utility are most useful.

Thief: prioritize bonus-action flexibility

Thief is a plausible option when you want bonus-action flexibility. It preserves the straightforward Rogue approach while changing the feel of the subclass. The available build sources do not establish a universal performance advantage over Arcane Trickster or Assassin.

Select Thief when you value adaptable turns and do not want the build to depend on spell selection or a carefully staged opening. It is the simplest alternative to Arcane Trickster for a player who wants to stay single-classed while emphasizing a different kind of flexibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assassin: emphasize stealth openings

Assassin suits a plan focused on opening from stealth. It is also the Rogue subclass used in the cited Gloom Stalker multiclass. This emphasis is most relevant when you can choose how to approach an encounter; it should not be read as a guarantee that every fight will begin on your terms.

Before choosing Assassin, consider your actual habits. If you routinely separate Astarion from the party, scout ahead, and decide when combat starts, the subclass aligns with that behavior. If you prefer to run the whole party together and react after enemies engage, Arcane Trickster or Thief may feel less demanding.

How to level the Gloom Stalker / Assassin route

If you want the specialized route, the cited guide reaches Ranger 5 before adding Rogue levels. That sequence is intended to obtain Extra Attack at Ranger 5 before finishing with Assassin Rogue. It is more involved than staying Rogue, so follow the order rather than taking scattered levels based only on the eventual class split.

  1. Take Ranger levels 1 and 2. Start the Ranger progression and continue until you can make the level-3 subclass choice.
  2. Choose Gloom Stalker at Ranger 3. This is the Ranger subclass specified by the build guide.
  3. Continue Ranger through level 5. The proposed route takes Ranger to level 5 before switching to Rogue, where it reaches Extra Attack.
  4. Choose Assassin at Rogue 3. After beginning Rogue levels, select Assassin when the subclass choice arrives.
  5. At the relevant level-4 feat choices, follow the guide’s plan or adjust to your needs. It lists +2 Dexterity and Alert or Savage Attacker at the Rogue 4 point. Treat those as that guide’s recommendations, not mandatory picks.
  6. Finish at Rogue 7. The complete split is Ranger 5 / Rogue 7.

The same guide recommends Sleight of Hand and Persuasion for this build and advises beginning encounters from stealth when feasible. If your group frequently enters combat without a stealth approach, the build’s central opening emphasis may be harder to use. This is a reason to choose the simpler Rogue path if you do not want to manage encounter setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What the level order means in practice

The order is important because multiclass characters do not receive every feature at the same point as a single-class character. Reaching Ranger 5 first is the guide’s way of obtaining Extra Attack before investing in Rogue. Switching back and forth earlier would change when those benefits arrive and would no longer match the cited progression.

The route also has a clear play pattern: use Stealth to choose a favorable approach when the area allows it, take advantage of the Gloom Stalker / Assassin emphasis on the opening, and continue the build until the Ranger 5 / Rogue 7 split is complete. It is a plan for players who enjoy preparation and positioning, not a compulsory replacement for the default companion class.

Gear to look for as the campaign progresses

Astarion’s listed Rogue starting kit includes a shortsword, leather armor, leather boots, thieves’ tools, and two grease bottles. These are starting equipment, not a claim that every item remains the best choice for the entire campaign. Gear should fit the path you chose and what you actually find.

Campaign stage Named examples in the Gloom Stalker / Assassin guide How to use the list
Act 1 Knife of the Undermountain King; Caustic Band; Auntie Ethel’s Hair as a stat-boost example Optional examples for that build, not guaranteed drops or requirements.
Act 2 Yuan-Ti Scale Mail An item listed by the guide for its route; do not treat it as mandatory for every Rogue.
Act 3 Elegant Studded Leather; Legacy of the Masters; Armour of Agility; Bloodthirst; Crimson Mischief Later-campaign examples from the specialized guide, subject to availability and your build.

PC Gamer’s Patch 8-and-beyond build guide supplies these gear examples for its Gloom Stalker / Assassin route. The names are in-game options, not a required shopping list. Because item availability and usefulness depend on campaign progress and build choices, keep suitable equipment you already have rather than delaying progression for a specific named item.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to use the gear list without turning it into a checklist

Start with the role, then evaluate each item you encounter. A stealth-oriented multiclass may make different choices from a spell-utility Arcane Trickster, and an item available in one campaign route may not appear in another. The guide’s Act 1, Act 2, and Act 3 examples show how the equipment plan can change over time; they do not establish a single mandatory loadout.

Do not confuse named examples with guaranteed rewards. Knife of the Undermountain King and Caustic Band are Act 1 examples, Yuan-Ti Scale Mail is listed for Act 2, and Elegant Studded Leather, Legacy of the Masters, Armour of Agility, Bloodthirst, and Crimson Mischief are later examples. Auntie Ethel’s Hair appears as an Act 1 stat-boost example. The safest practical rule is to use gear that supports your current class and encounter plan, and to treat these names as targets only if they fit the route you are actually playing.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Treating the pre-recruitment ability scores as immutable: Astarion returns to level 1 on recruitment, so separate the previewed state from the buildable companion state.
  • Assuming Arcane Trickster is mandatory: It is his default level-3 subclass, not the only valid choice.
  • Multiclassing without following the order: The cited Gloom Stalker route reaches Ranger 5 before Rogue specifically to obtain Extra Attack at that point.
  • Picking skills in isolation: Sleight of Hand and Stealth are natural, but Persuasion, Perception, Deception, and Investigation may better fill gaps in your party.
  • Building entirely around stealth while ignoring encounter habits: Assassin and Gloom Stalker are most aligned with opening from concealment, which is not always how a fight begins.
  • Waiting for one named item: The listed gear is optional and route-dependent. Delaying your progression for a specific item can leave Astarion under-equipped in the meantime.
  • Expecting a universal damage ranking: The cited material does not establish comparative damage testing for these setups, so choose by role, complexity, and encounter plan.

Which route should you take?

  • Choose Rogue 12 if you want Astarion to remain a reliable scout and utility character without planning a multiclass sequence.
  • Choose Arcane Trickster if you prefer his default subclass and want spell utility.
  • Choose Thief if bonus-action flexibility is the feature you want to build around.
  • Choose Assassin if you deliberately set up stealth openings and want that emphasis to shape the build.
  • Choose Gloom Stalker Ranger 5 / Assassin Rogue 7 if you are comfortable following a specific level order to reach Extra Attack at Ranger 5 and build around stealth-first encounters.

There is no universal best choice across every party and difficulty. Astarion’s skills can cover Dexterity-focused exploration needs, while the subclass and multiclass decision should follow how often you use stealth, whether the party needs spell utility, and how much leveling complexity you want.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the easiest Astarion build in Baldur’s Gate 3?

Keep him as a Dexterity-focused Rogue, use Sleight of Hand and Stealth as core skills, and continue with Rogue levels. At level 3, Arcane Trickster is the default and adds spell utility without requiring multiclass planning.

Should Astarion stay a Rogue?

For most first playthroughs, yes. Rogue 12 is the simplest route and preserves his scouting, lock-picking, trap-handling, and infiltration role. Gloom Stalker Ranger 5 / Assassin Rogue 7 is a specialized alternative, not a requirement.

Which skills should Astarion take?

Sleight of Hand and Stealth are the natural classic-rogue pair. Add Persuasion if he often leads dialogue, Perception if your party needs another lookout, or Deception and Investigation when those better cover your group’s needs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is Astarion’s default subclass?

He defaults to Arcane Trickster at level 3. Thief is a reasonable choice for bonus-action flexibility, while Assassin emphasizes stealth openings.

What is the Gloom Stalker / Assassin level order?

The cited Patch 8-era plan takes Ranger to level 5, chooses Gloom Stalker at Ranger 3, then adds Rogue levels, chooses Assassin at Rogue 3, and finishes at Ranger 5 / Rogue 7. It lists +2 Dexterity and Alert or Savage Attacker at the Rogue 4 point.

Does the multiclass build require starting every fight from stealth?

The guide recommends beginning encounters from stealth when feasible, because the route is built around stealth openings. If you usually enter combat openly, a straightforward Rogue path may be more comfortable.

What gear should Astarion use in each Act?

The specialized guide lists Knife of the Undermountain King, Caustic Band, and Auntie Ethel’s Hair as Act 1 examples; Yuan-Ti Scale Mail in Act 2; and Elegant Studded Leather, Legacy of the Masters, Armour of Agility, Bloodthirst, and Crimson Mischief in Act 3. These are optional, route-dependent examples rather than guaranteed requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When was Patch 8 released?

Larian dated Patch 8’s rollout to April 15, 2025 and described it as the final major update. Hotfixes, mods, and platform differences can still affect mechanics.

The Bottom Line

For a dependable Astarion, prioritize Dexterity and keep Rogue utility at the center. Sleight of Hand plus Stealth covers the classic scout and lockpicker role; Persuasion or Perception can fill party gaps. Arcane Trickster, Thief, and Assassin each change the emphasis, while Gloom Stalker Ranger 5 / Assassin Rogue 7 is a more demanding stealth-opening route that reaches Extra Attack after Ranger 5. Treat the named Act-by-Act gear as optional examples, not mandatory purchases.
