The key decision is the streaming route: the Android app must support the protocol you choose. “Wireless” here means network connectivity; it does not mean the camera is necessarily battery-powered or free of wired power and camera connections.
How the Raspberry Pi security camera system works
The system has three layers, and each has a separate job:
- Capture: A camera module connected to the Raspberry Pi captures video.
- Streaming: Software on the Pi sends the video directly over the network or passes it to a streaming server that can provide compatible outputs.
- Viewing: An Android client connects using a protocol it supports to show live video, and, if the chosen setup provides it, recordings.
Raspberry Pi’s current camera documentation describes capturing and streaming with rpicam-vid. It also explains how server software such as MediaMTX can use a Raspberry Pi camera as a native source and re-stream video to clients. Raspberry Pi Documentation summarizes the server approach: “All of these streaming servers can ingest Raspberry Pi camera streams created by rpicam-vid, and re-stream them to RTSP clients, or to web browsers using WebRTC, or using many other formats.” Read Raspberry Pi’s streaming documentation.
Choose a streaming route your Android viewer supports
Decide how the Android device will receive video before settling on the capture and server configuration. A stream that works on the Pi is not automatically playable in every Android app. Raspberry Pi’s documentation describes UDP streaming with rpicam-vid and recommends the libav backend for most applications in that documented context. For other client needs, a streaming server can ingest the camera video and make it available in formats such as RTSP or WebRTC.

Direct streaming with rpicam-vid
This route sends video from the Pi using a transport such as UDP. It can suit a simple setup when the intended Android viewer can receive the chosen stream. Raspberry Pi documents this method and recommends the libav backend for most applications in its guidance; that is not a guarantee that a particular Android app supports the stream or that it will perform well on a given network.
Streaming through a server
A server adds an intermediary between camera capture and viewers. Raspberry Pi documents MediaMTX, MistServer, and go2rtc among the available approaches. MediaMTX can take a Raspberry Pi camera as a native source using the source: rpiCamera configuration and can be set to acquire the camera only when a client requests the stream. Choose the server output based on the Android client rather than assuming one protocol is universally compatible. See the documented server options and configuration details.

WebRTC and the Pi Camera Android app
The Google Play listing for Pi Camera by Tzu Huan Tai describes WebRTC live monitoring and historical video playback. It also states that MQTT, STUN, and TURN servers are required. These requirements apply to that third-party app’s described setup, not to every Raspberry Pi camera stream or Android viewer. The listing was updated September 4, 2026; its feature descriptions and privacy disclosures are developer-provided, not independent test results or an audit. It is not an official Raspberry Pi application. Check the Pi Camera listing on Google Play.
Plan the build around the camera, Pi, storage, and power
Camera module
Raspberry Pi Camera Module 2 is a real Raspberry Pi camera product and a plausible component for this project. Confirm that the selected camera and board are compatible, including the connector and software requirements for that exact pairing, before buying. Raspberry Pi’s camera documentation describes supported camera use and software; product suitability is not universal across all boards and installations. Raspberry Pi board
The Pi runs the capture and streaming software, so choose a board only after deciding the target resolution, frame rate, and whether the system also needs to record or perform other processing. The available documentation does not establish one best board for every camera system.
Storage and power
A microSD card appears in the setup material in The Official Raspberry Pi Camera Guide, published circa 2019. That guide’s security-camera chapter uses historical motionEyeOS-era instructions, so do not treat its old Wi-Fi provisioning steps as current Raspberry Pi OS directions. For a current build, check the requirements for the specific board and estimate recording storage from your intended recording schedule before choosing a card or power supply. Decide where you will view video and whether to retain recordings
For each candidate setup, check these practical points before installing it:
- Viewing location: Determine whether you need viewing only on the local network or also from outside it. A working local stream does not by itself provide a safe remote-access design.
- Android compatibility: Verify that the selected app or browser accepts the protocol and stream format produced by the Pi or server.
- Latency and image settings: Set resolution and frame rate for your intended use, then check how the selected route behaves on your network. The cited documentation does not provide a measured comparison of latency or image quality among the options.
- Recording and retention: Decide whether you need live viewing only or saved footage. Confirm which component records, where files are stored, and how long they remain; a stream alone does not establish a recording or retention policy.
- Service dependencies: Account for any signaling or relay services required by your chosen client. For example, the Pi Camera listing specifies MQTT, STUN, and TURN for its described WebRTC setup.
Do not confuse a working stream with a secure camera
The streaming instructions establish ways to deliver camera video, not a complete security configuration for remote access, authentication, encryption, retention, or router exposure. Do not assume a configuration is secure simply because video works, and do not expose a camera service to the public internet through router port forwarding based on these streaming instructions alone. Security controls depend on the specific software and network design; the cited material does not establish a current checklist for this exact system.
