There is no universal parts list that costs exactly as much as a console and performs identically in every game. You can, however, make a defensible match by fixing one console model, one country, a complete PC budget, and the exact games, resolution, settings, and frame-rate target you care about. Then select compatible parts, price the entire system on the same date, and verify results with like-for-like benchmarks. This method prevents the most common mistake: treating a GPU name or a teraflop number as proof of console equivalence.
Start with a precise target
“Match a console” is too broad to build from. A base PlayStation 5, its Digital Edition, and the PlayStation 5 Pro have different prices and hardware. A PC that is competitive with one may be a poor comparison with another. Write down the target before opening a parts list.
Choose the console and market
Sony Interactive Entertainment announced revised recommended U.S. prices effective April 2, 2026: $649.99 for PS5, $599.99 for PS5 Digital Edition, and $899.99 for PS5 Pro. These are recommended prices, not a guarantee that every retailer charges them. Sony lists other prices for the United Kingdom, Europe, and Japan and directs buyers in other territories to local retailers or PlayStation Direct. Record your country, currency, tax treatment, shipping, and whether you are comparing new hardware with a sale or used item.

Define what “performance” means
Performance is a set of conditions, not a single specification. Select at least one game you intend to play and write down:
- Resolution or output target, such as 1080p or 4K.
- Graphics preset and important quality settings.
- Whether upscaling, dynamic resolution, ray tracing, or frame generation is enabled.
- Target frame rate and whether the console uses a quality or performance mode.
- Any locked frame-rate limit or variable-refresh display assumption.
A console may use a carefully tuned dynamic-resolution mode while a PC benchmark uses a fixed native resolution. Those are different workloads. State the conditions beside every result instead of declaring that one platform is simply “faster.”
Know what the console hardware does—and does not—tell you
PlayStation 5 platform details
The current PS5 manual describes an eight-core, 16-thread AMD Zen 2 CPU, an AMD RDNA-based graphics engine, 16 GB of GDDR6 memory, and a custom SSD. In that manual, the disc model has a 1 TB SSD and the Digital Edition has an 825 GB SSD. Sony notes that specifications can change, and revisions may differ. These are platform characteristics, not a shopping list of desktop parts.
The referenced manual gives the PS5 graphics engine as 10 TFLOPS. An older official specification used 10.3 TFLOPS, so do not mix those figures to imply model-level precision. A teraflop count also omits architecture, clocks, memory behavior, game optimization, and the console’s operating-system overhead.
Xbox Series X as a second reference point
Microsoft’s official Xbox Series X specification page lists a custom eight-core Zen 2 CPU, a 12-TFLOPS, 52-compute-unit RDNA 2 GPU, 16 GB of GDDR6 memory with different bandwidth regions, and NVMe SSD configurations. Microsoft describes 4K gaming and a performance target of up to 120 FPS. “Target” is not a promise that every title runs at 4K or 120 FPS, so use the same game-level discipline when this console is your baseline.

Why a desktop parts list cannot copy those numbers
Both consoles combine custom CPU and graphics designs, shared high-bandwidth memory, a fixed storage architecture, and software tuned for one platform. A desktop normally has a socketed CPU, a separate graphics card with its own memory, system RAM, a motherboard, a power supply, and a retail operating system. The parts may have similar names or theoretical compute figures while producing different frame times in the same game. Treat console specifications as context and benchmarks as the evidence for a PC comparison.
Build the complete budget, not just the tower
A fair price comparison includes everything required to play. List each item before shopping:

- CPU.
- CPU cooler, if the selected processor does not include a suitable one.
- Motherboard with the correct socket, firmware support, and required expansion slots.
- Graphics card.
- System memory.
- Solid-state storage, with capacity compared on a usable basis.
- Power supply with adequate wattage, connectors, and safety certification.
- Case with room for the motherboard, graphics card, cooler, and airflow.
- Operating system, if you do not already have a transferable license.
- Display, keyboard, mouse, controller, headset, and other input devices that are included in the console purchase or required for your PC setup.
- Tax and shipping.
Consoles normally arrive as a ready-to-use appliance with a controller and an HDMI connection. A tower-only PC quote can therefore look cheaper while leaving necessary purchases outside the comparison. Decide whether the display is shared between systems; if it is, show that assumption explicitly.
Storage deserves special care. Compare usable space and the cost of expansion, not only a printed capacity. The PS5 manual’s 1 TB and 825 GB figures are nominal platform capacities; a PC SSD’s formatted free space will also be lower than its label.
Select parts in the order that protects gaming performance
1. Choose the graphics-card performance tier
The GPU is usually the most consequential shopping decision for a gaming-focused tower. Start with your chosen resolution, settings, and frame-rate target, then consult component-specific benchmarks under those conditions. Do not pick by the word “gaming,” memory size alone, or a teraflop comparison.

PC Gamer reported a $309.99 RTX 5050 deal on October 8, 2026 and described the card as a budget option, including comparisons with Intel Arc B570. That figure is a dated, article-reported deal rather than a stable manufacturer price. Check the current local listing, warranty, power connector, and benchmark results before using it in a build. The deal does not establish that the card matches a PS5, Xbox Series X, or any particular game mode.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For a 1080p target, prioritize consistent frame times and settings you will actually use. For 4K or heavy ray tracing, the required GPU tier can rise sharply. If your selected games support upscaling or a performance mode on console, decide whether you will allow the equivalent feature on PC; otherwise the comparison is not like for like.
2. Size the CPU for the target frame rate
Once the GPU tier is identified, choose a CPU that can feed it at the desired frame rate. A high-refresh 1080p target can expose CPU limits that a 4K target hides behind GPU load. Check minimum and average frame-rate results rather than relying only on core count.
A PC Gamer budget-build article names the Ryzen 5 5600X with an AM4/DDR4 platform as one lower-cost path. Treat it as a dated example, not a guaranteed 2026 recommendation. Verify the processor’s current price, motherboard firmware support, memory cost, upgrade path, and performance in your selected games. Do not place an AM4 CPU on a newer socket board or assume that any inexpensive board includes the firmware version required to boot.
3. Match the motherboard, memory, and storage
- Motherboard: Confirm CPU socket, chipset support, BIOS readiness, graphics-card slot, M.2 slot availability, rear I/O, networking, and case form factor.
- Memory: Buy a matched kit supported by the board and CPU. Check capacity, speed, and timings as a package; a bargain kit that runs at a fallback speed can erase expected gains.
- Storage: Use an SSD with enough free space for the operating system and your installed games. Check the board’s M.2 size and generation support, and budget for expansion if your library will exceed the initial capacity.
Do not copy the console’s shared-memory figure into a desktop specification. A PC’s system RAM and the graphics card’s dedicated VRAM serve different roles, so compare actual game benchmarks and stutter behavior.

4. Validate power, cooling, and physical fit
Use the graphics card and CPU manufacturer requirements to select a power supply with headroom, the required connectors, and appropriate protections. Confirm the card length and thickness against the case, cooler height against the side panel, radiator support if applicable, and airflow paths. A part list that boots but throttles under sustained load does not meet its performance target.
Use a reproducible comparison worksheet
Keep one worksheet for the console and one for the PC. The following axes prevent hidden assumptions:
| Axis | What to record |
|---|---|
| Total upfront price | Console model and price date; every PC part, tax, shipping, operating system, and required peripheral |
| Game performance | Same game, resolution, graphics preset, upscaling or frame-generation setting, and frame-rate mode |
| Included hardware | Console controller and display connection versus PC input devices and display assumptions |
| Storage | Usable capacity and expansion cost, not only nominal SSD size |
| Flexibility | Upgrade options, non-gaming use, game-library access, and any current paid online-service terms |
| Price confidence | Country, date checked, new or used condition, retailer availability, and whether a deal is temporary |
Fill the worksheet only with values you can verify. Current PC totals remain unresolved until you choose an exact parts list and check live local prices, so do not publish a single “console-equivalent PC cost” as if it were permanent.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Benchmark the build against the console
Keep the test conditions identical
- Choose the same game version or patch where possible.
- Set the same output resolution and rendering mode.
- Match the console’s quality or performance preset as closely as the PC version allows.
- Record upscaling, dynamic resolution, ray tracing, and frame-generation settings.
- Measure average frame rate and frame-time consistency, including demanding scenes rather than only an easy opening area.
- Record the display refresh rate and any frame cap.
Use reputable CPU, GPU, and SSD benchmark results for the chosen components. Tom’s Hardware’s 2026 guide organizes builds by price tiers and points readers to separate component benchmarks; that supports this method but does not prove a same-price console result. If no benchmark uses equivalent settings, say that the evidence is inconclusive instead of naming a winner.
Interpret results without overclaiming
A PC may deliver a higher average frame rate but worse shader-compilation stutter, or match a console’s average while requiring lower settings. A console may hold a carefully tuned 30 or 60 FPS mode with dynamic resolution that has no exact PC equivalent. Report those differences directly. Never convert 10 or 12 TFLOPS into a promised frame rate, and never infer equivalence from the GPU label alone.

Assembly and first-boot checklist
- Install the CPU and memory on the motherboard according to the board manual.
- Mount the CPU cooler with the supplied hardware and apply thermal material as directed.
- Install the M.2 SSD and secure it with the correct standoff.
- Fit the motherboard into the case, then connect the front-panel, USB, audio, and fan headers.
- Install the power supply and route the CPU, motherboard, storage, and graphics-card cables without obstructing fans.
- Seat the graphics card in the primary full-length slot and attach every required power connector.
- Before closing the case, check that all fans spin freely and that no cable is touching a blade.
- Enter firmware setup, confirm that the CPU, memory, and SSD are detected, and apply only settings supported by the component manuals.
- Install the operating system, motherboard and graphics drivers, and game updates.
- Run a short stability check, monitor temperatures and clocks, and then benchmark the selected games using the recorded settings.
Common failure modes and fixes
The total exceeds the console price
Recheck whether the PC quote omitted the operating system, display, controller, storage expansion, tax, or shipping. If every item is included and the total is still higher, that is a valid result: a flexible desktop may require a larger upfront budget than the appliance baseline. You can compare a lower-cost GPU or a used component only if you label its condition, warranty, and expected performance.
The PC matches average FPS but feels less smooth
Inspect frame-time graphs, background processes, shader-compilation behavior, memory configuration, temperatures, and frame caps. Update drivers and game patches, then retest with the same settings. Do not hide a frame-time problem behind a higher average.
The system will not boot
Check the motherboard’s CPU-support list and BIOS version, reseat memory, verify the 24-pin and CPU power connectors, and confirm that the monitor cable is connected to the graphics card when a discrete GPU is installed. A socket or firmware mismatch is more likely than a defective game setting.
Performance is below the benchmark
Confirm that the graphics card is in the primary slot, memory is running as a matched kit, the correct driver is installed, and the CPU and GPU are not thermally throttling. Compare clocks and power behavior during the same scene used by the published benchmark. Different patches, presets, and upscaling modes can invalidate an otherwise careful comparison.
Decide whether the PC premium is worthwhile
Choose the console when simplicity is the priority
A console gives you a fixed hardware target, a controller-centered setup, and software tuned to that platform. If your budget is strict, you want predictable setup, and your games run acceptably in the available modes, the console can be the clearer value even when a PC offers theoretical upgrade benefits.
Choose the PC when flexibility has real value
A desktop can serve non-gaming work, accept future component upgrades, support a wider range of settings and input devices, and use PC storefronts and mods where available. Those advantages are part of the value calculation, but they do not make a higher-priced tower a same-price match. Count them separately from measured game performance.
A publication-ready decision rule
Call a build a match only when all of these statements are true:
- The console model, country, currency, and price date are named.
- The PC total includes the tower, operating system, required peripherals, tax, and shipping—or the exclusions are explicit.
- At least one shared game is tested at the same resolution, settings, reconstruction mode, and frame-rate target.
- The parts are compatible, adequately powered, and thermally sustainable.
- The benchmark source and test conditions are identified.
- Any difference between a temporary deal and a regular price is labeled.
If one condition is missing, describe the result as an estimate or an informed configuration, not proof of universal parity. Prices and availability change, so refresh every component listing and console price immediately before buying.
