For a new OBS setup, use the Waveform plugin: add its visualizer source to your radio scene, select the audio source carrying the jazz program, and test that it reacts before you stream. Waveform supports Windows, macOS, and Linux and offers spectrum, meter, and waveform displays. The visualizer adds motion to the scene; it does not keep OBS, your computer, or your internet connection online around the clock.

Choose a visualizer plugin

Waveform is the recommended choice for a new setup

The OBS Project Forums resource listing identifies Waveform 1.9.1, last updated July 14, 2026. It requires OBS Studio 27.0.0 or later and lists 64-bit Windows, macOS, and Linux support. Available styles include frequency spectrum graphs in curve, bar, stepped-bar, and circular forms, plus peak and RMS meters and waveform display. Check the Waveform resource page for the current download and compatibility information before installing or updating; versions and requirements can change.

Spectralizer is mainly for existing installations

Spectralizer’s OBS resource page lists version 1.3.4, last updated January 28, 2021, with Windows and Linux support and a minimum OBS version of 24.0.0. Its author says it has been deprecated in favor of Waveform, which offers more options. The resource does not list macOS support, so Waveform is the better-documented option for a new installation. See the Spectralizer resource page if you need details about an existing setup.

Add and configure Waveform in OBS

  1. Check compatibility. Confirm that OBS is version 27.0.0 or later and that your operating system is among the 64-bit platforms listed by Waveform.
  2. Install Waveform. Follow the download and installation instructions on the Waveform resource page. Follow any installer prompts, and restart OBS if the installation instructions call for it. The resource overview does not establish one set of installation file paths for every operating system.
  3. Open the radio scene. In OBS, select the scene used for the jazz stream and add Waveform’s visualizer as a source. If it is not available in the source list after installation, confirm installation and restart OBS before troubleshooting further.
  4. Select the program audio. Choose the OBS source that carries the jazz playback—not an unrelated microphone or desktop sound. If the music comes from a Media Source or another dedicated source, select that source where the visualizer offers it. Play the program and confirm its audio is active in the OBS mixer.
  5. Choose a display style and compose the scene. Select a spectrum, waveform, or meter style. Resize and position it over the background art, keeping important artwork and text visible. Check that the motion is legible at the resolution you plan to stream.
  6. Preview with the actual program. Play representative jazz audio and confirm the visualizer moves with it, remains visible, and does not obscure key artwork. This checks the scene locally; it is not a guarantee of continuous broadcast availability.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live and test the signal

  1. Create or schedule the stream. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or schedule a live stream. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains how to obtain the stream URL and key.
  2. Enter the connection details in OBS. In OBS stream settings, enter the YouTube stream URL and stream key, or use YouTube integration if offered. Keep the stream key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
  3. Start the encoder and check YouTube’s preview. Confirm that the preview appears in Live Control Room before going live. Use audio and movement similar to the intended broadcast, as YouTube recommends, rather than testing with a silent or static scene.
  4. Check the whole signal path. Listen for silence or clipping, watch the visualizer react to the jazz source, and inspect YouTube’s preview, stream-health indicators, and messages. A successful test confirms that the tested signal reached YouTube at that time; it does not establish that a 24/7 stream will never disconnect.

Set encoder quality for the real connection

Use YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate guidance for your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec. YouTube recommends testing upload speed, choosing a sustainable bitrate for the connection, and monitoring stream health. Its settings guidance calls for CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds), RTMP or RTMPS, and AAC or MP3 audio; YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport.

1080p30, H.264 14 Mbps
720p30, AV1 or H.265 6 Mbps
720p30, H.264 8 Mbps

These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not a measurement of your upload connection or a stability guarantee. The YouTube settings page also lists 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps among recommended advanced stereo audio settings. Leave room for network variation and test the actual scene at the intended settings.

A visualizer adds scene complexity. OBS warns that meeting its basic system requirements does not guarantee that a computer can stream or record; demand depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene. During a representative test, watch OBS’s rendering and encoding status as well as YouTube’s stream health. See OBS system requirements for its qualification.

Plan separately for 24/7 continuity and archives

Waveform changes what viewers see, not how reliably the broadcast stays connected. A continuous setup also depends on the computer and OBS remaining available, dependable power and internet, uninterrupted music playback, monitoring, and a recovery plan for encoder or network interruptions. A successful preview cannot guarantee those conditions over a long run.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not promise that a stream running beyond 12 hours will be archived as one uninterrupted video. Treat continuous live availability and archive length as separate concerns, and check YouTube’s current guidance and Live Control Room for your plans.

YouTube’s encoder directory includes Gyre and Upstream as cloud-based 24/7 streaming services. That listing does not establish whether either service can reproduce an OBS scene with the Waveform visualizer, or verify service terms. Check the scene workflow and current terms directly before choosing an alternative that must preserve this visualizer.

Common problems and fixes

  • The visualizer does not appear in OBS: Check Waveform’s installation instructions and compatibility requirements, then restart OBS if required. Confirm the OBS version is at least 27.0.0 and that your system is a listed 64-bit platform.
  • The visualizer is visible but does not move: Confirm the selected source is the one carrying the jazz program, then check that the source is playing and showing activity in the OBS mixer. An inactive or unrelated source will not reflect the radio audio.
  • The visualizer reacts to the wrong sound: Re-select the program audio source in the visualizer settings where supported. Avoid selecting a microphone or desktop audio source unless it actually carries the stream’s music.
  • The display obscures artwork or is hard to read: Resize and reposition it in the scene, choose a different available style, and preview it at the intended stream resolution with the actual background art.
  • YouTube does not show a preview: Check that OBS has the correct stream URL and key, start the encoder, and review Live Control Room messages and stream health. Do not expose or share the key while checking it.
  • The stream is unstable or OBS reports rendering or encoding trouble: Test a sustainable bitrate with the intended scene and monitor OBS and YouTube status. Reduce demand by adjusting settings such as resolution or frame rate if your system or connection cannot sustain the chosen configuration; use YouTube’s current codec-specific guidance rather than a universal bitrate.
  • A long stream does not produce one complete archive: YouTube’s automatic-archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours; it is not a promise of a single archive for longer continuous broadcasts.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a continuous YouTube stream without leaving OBS and a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud option for looping uploaded videos. Its workflow is to upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera; its described workflow does not reproduce an OBS scene or its Waveform visualizer, so use OBS if that visualizer is essential to the broadcast.
