To resin-print a miniature Benchy with the most detail you can retain, start with the official high-resolution STL, scale it only as far as its small features remain visible in the slicer, and begin at 0.05 mm layers. Calibrate exposure for your specific printer and resin, tilt the boat to manage the hull’s large cross-section, and place light supports on less visible, sturdy areas. A smaller layer height can help with vertical detail, but it cannot bring back rails or openings that scaling makes too small to slice reliably.

What makes a resin-printed miniature Benchy lose detail?

Miniaturizing the model reduces every feature along with its overall length. A rail, roof edge, or cabin opening that is clear at full size may become too thin or narrow to survive slicing at a small scale. Exposure and support placement matter too: exposure that is not suited to the resin and printer can soften or distort fine features, while supports can leave marks on surfaces where their tips meet the print.

The Benchy is useful for examining these trade-offs because it was designed as a printer calibration model. The official 3DBenchy About page describes it as a model for testing and benchmarking printers, including surface finish, dimensional accuracy, and warping. Its hull is a large, smooth overhanging curve, which makes orientation and support decisions especially visible in the finished boat.

Think of detail retention as a sequence of checks, not a single magic setting: choose a good source mesh, select a scale, inspect the sliced geometry, calibrate exposure, and then check how the orientation and supports affect the hull and other visible details.

Which Benchy STL should I use?

Use the official high-resolution, watertight 3DBenchy STL rather than a low-resolution copy when fine detail is the goal. The official 3D-print page lists the high-resolution file as 225,154 triangles, and the official Features page gives its maximum deviation from the original CAD as 0.001 mm.

Those specifications describe the source model, not the detail your finished miniature is guaranteed to show. Scaling, the printer’s resolution, resin behavior, exposure, and supports all affect the result. A dense mesh gives the slicer a faithful shape to work from, but it cannot preserve a feature that has become too small in the scaled model.

The official 1:1 Benchy measures 60.00 mm from bow to stern. The official About page gives its typical full-size model volume as 15.55 cm3. Treat those as reference dimensions for the standard model; once you scale it, its dimensions and volume change.

How small can I scale a Benchy and still keep its features?

There is no single smallest usable scale established for every resin printer and resin. Scale reduces the thickness and width of features in direct proportion, so the reliable choice is the smallest size at which the sliced preview still shows the details you care about as continuous, printable geometry.

Use the 60 mm length to plan a scale

For a simple estimate, multiply the 60 mm full-size length by the scale percentage. At 50% scale, the boat is 30 mm long; at 25%, it is 15 mm long. A feature that is 1 mm wide on the full-size model would correspondingly be 0.5 mm wide at 50% or 0.25 mm at 25%. These are arithmetic examples, not promises that a printer will reproduce a feature of that size.

Choose a target length first, then inspect the resulting geometry. A miniature that looks acceptable in the slicer’s 3D view may still lose narrow details in the layer preview. The layer preview is the more useful check for whether a rail, roof edge, or opening is actually represented in the slices.

Inspect the features most likely to disappear

  • Rails: Check that the rails remain visible along their length rather than becoming intermittent or vanishing.
  • Roof edge: Look for a continuous edge instead of a thinning or broken outline.
  • Cabin openings: Confirm that the openings remain open in the layer preview and have not closed up at the selected scale.
  • Bow and hull curve: Look for a coherent outline and smooth progression through the layers, rather than isolated fragments or abrupt changes.

If a feature is missing or broken in the preview, do not expect a lower layer height alone to restore it. Increase the scale, or accept that the smallest version is a simplified miniature rather than a detail-faithful one. Save a copy of the scaled project before experimenting so you can compare sizes without losing your original setup.

What layer height should I use for a miniature Benchy?

Start at 0.05 mm for a practical balance of detail and print time. Try 0.025 mm when the miniature includes shallow relief or lettering and your printer and resin are already calibrated. The lower layer height creates more, thinner layers over the same vertical distance, so it generally takes longer to print.

Layer height When to try it Trade-off
0.05 mm A first miniature, or a useful baseline for comparing results Fewer layers than at 0.025 mm, with a practical detail/time balance
0.025 mm Shallow relief or lettering on a calibrated printer and resin More layers and longer print time; it does not fix features lost to scaling or unsuitable exposure

These are starting points, not a guarantee of a particular finish. The correct exposure depends on the exact resin, its color, the printer, and the vat condition. When changing layer height, use a profile appropriate to that height and validate exposure again rather than assuming the previous value will produce the same result.

How should I set resin exposure and bottom layers?

Use the resin manufacturer’s profile as a starting point, then run an exposure test on the actual printer and resin before committing to a miniature Benchy. Do not copy an exposure number from another resin, color, or printer and treat it as universal.

Published Anycubic resin profiles illustrate why: examples at 0.05 mm layer height include normal exposure times of about 2.0–3.6 seconds, while bottom exposure is about 20–50 seconds and profiles commonly use five or six bottom layers. Those ranges vary by printer and resin profile. They are examples of variation, not a recommended setting for an unverified combination.

Calibrate before printing the boat

  1. Identify the exact resin and printer. Start with the resin maker’s profile for that printer, resin type, and color, if one is published.
  2. Match the intended layer height. Use the exposure guidance for the layer height you plan to print, rather than carrying over a setting from a different profile.
  3. Run an exposure test. Use a test suited to your printer and resin, following its instructions. Assess whether the result resolves the fine features you need; a Benchy is a longer and less controlled way to discover an unsuitable exposure.
  4. Record the working settings. Note the resin, color, printer, layer height, normal exposure, bottom exposure, bottom-layer count, and relevant vat condition so the result can be reproduced or compared.
  5. Print the miniature only after the test is satisfactory. If the result is not satisfactory, adjust and test again rather than changing several settings at once.

Bottom-layer settings are part of the manufacturer profile, not a substitute for calibrating normal exposure. Keep them aligned with the resin maker’s recommendation; the published Anycubic examples show five or six bottom layers and approximately 20–50 seconds of bottom exposure, depending on profile.

How should I orient a miniature Benchy?

Tilt the boat so the entire hull or deck is not exposed as one large simultaneous cross-section, and keep prominent visible details away from support tips. The hull’s smooth overhanging curve makes support scarring particularly noticeable, so the best orientation balances manageable cross-sections, secure printing, and protected display surfaces.

Orient for cross-section and visibility

  1. Start with the boat at an angle. Avoid an orientation that presents a broad, flat area of hull or deck all at once. The goal is to control the cross-sectional area through successive layers and reduce the risk of suction-related problems.
  2. Protect the visible side. Turn the model so supports can attach to the underside, stern, or other less conspicuous areas where practical. Avoid placing support tips on the bow, visible hull curve, rails, roof edge, and cabin openings when an alternative is available.
  3. Check thin areas. Make sure the chosen angle does not leave a thin wall or roof edge unsupported where it would otherwise peel or fail. Add reinforcement where the slicer indicates it is needed.
  4. Inspect the full layer sequence. Review the preview for islands and unsupported regions, then check that the boat’s details remain connected as the layers build. Reorient or add supports where the preview shows a problem.

There is no single angle that works for every scale, printer, or support layout. A smaller Benchy changes the cross-sections and the available places for supports, so inspect the actual sliced file rather than relying on an angle remembered from a larger print.

Where should I place supports in Lychee or Chitubox?

Use light supports on hidden or robust surfaces where they can hold the boat without putting contact marks on delicate, prominent detail. In Lychee or Chitubox, the practical method is the same: orient the model, inspect the layer preview for islands, add supports where needed, and reslice to verify the result. Exact support count and placement depend on the model, scale, orientation, and slicer.

Choose support locations deliberately

  • Prefer less visible surfaces: The underside and stern are potential support areas, subject to the actual geometry and orientation.
  • Avoid fragile features: Do not use delicate rails, the roof edge, or cabin openings as convenient anchor points when a sturdier surface can serve instead.
  • Use light supports where they are sufficient: Light contacts can reduce the size of support marks, but the boat still needs enough support to print reliably.
  • Reinforce where necessary: A thin wall or roof that would otherwise peel may need stronger or additional support. The aim is not to minimize support count at any cost; it is to support the model while limiting scars on important surfaces.
  • Check islands after changes: Moving supports or changing orientation can create new unsupported regions. Recheck the preview after each meaningful change.

Resin miniatures generally need supports, but there is no meaningful universal support count for a Benchy: a different scale or angle changes where the model begins and how its surfaces appear layer by layer. Use the slicer’s preview to evaluate the specific file rather than treating a fixed count as a recipe.

How do I wash, dry, cure, and remove supports without damaging detail?

Follow the technical sheet for the resin you used for washing, drying, and curing; there is no universal wash or cure time established for all resins. Remove supports carefully and inspect the finished boat under magnification, especially where small details and support contacts meet.

  1. Wash according to the resin instructions. Use the wash method and duration specified for that resin rather than applying a time from an unrelated profile.
  2. Let the model dry before curing. Follow the manufacturer’s post-processing guidance for drying and curing. Avoid substituting a generic duration for the technical sheet’s instructions.
  3. Remove supports with care. Work cautiously around the hull, bow, rails, cabin openings, and roof edge. Support attachment points can leave marks, and delicate details can be damaged if handled roughly.
  4. Inspect the result under magnification. Check the bow, rails, cabin openings, roof edge, and hull curve for missing detail, scarring, or distortion. Compare these areas with the sliced preview to distinguish a support mark from a feature that was already absent in the slices.

How can I tell whether the print settings or the scale caused a problem?

Compare the sliced preview with the physical result. If a rail or opening is already absent or broken in the preview, the chosen scale or sliced geometry is the first issue to address. If the feature appears in the preview but prints poorly, investigate exposure, supports, orientation, and post-processing instead of immediately scaling up.

What you observe Where to look first What to check
Rails, roof edges, or cabin openings missing in the preview Scale and sliced geometry Increase the scale or choose a size whose layer preview retains those features.
A visible detail appears in the preview but is softened or distorted in the print Exposure calibration Confirm the resin, color, printer, and layer-height profile; validate exposure with a test.
Marks appear where supports contact the hull or other visible surfaces Support placement and orientation Move contacts toward less visible, robust areas where the geometry allows it.
A broad hull area is difficult to support cleanly Orientation and cross-section Tilt the model to avoid a large simultaneous cross-section and recheck the support preview.
Features are present but damaged during cleanup Support removal and handling Remove contacts carefully and inspect under magnification.

How should I compare two miniature Benchy prints?

Compare one controlled change at a time and judge the same features on both prints. The Benchy’s calibration purpose makes it useful to evaluate fine-feature retention, support scars, dimensional accuracy, hull smoothness, warping, and whether a print completes reliably.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, keep resin, printer, scale, orientation, and support layout the same while comparing 0.05 mm with 0.025 mm layers. Then compare a separate pair with only orientation or support placement changed. Record print time and resin consumption alongside the visible result; a longer print or a more elaborate support layout may not be worthwhile if the details you care about do not improve.

Use the 60.00 mm official model length as the full-size reference when considering dimensional accuracy, while recognizing that any scaled version should be judged against its intended scaled dimensions. Also note whether the hull remains smooth, whether the rails and openings survive, whether supports leave visible scars, and whether the result shows warping. A single successful miniature establishes what worked for that setup, not a universal profile for other resins or printers.

What is a reliable first-print workflow?

For a first attempt, prioritize a previewable scale and a calibrated baseline over the smallest possible boat. This order helps separate geometry problems from printing problems and makes later adjustments easier to interpret.

  1. Download the official high-resolution, watertight Benchy STL.
  2. Choose a target length using the 60.00 mm full-size reference and scale the model deliberately.
  3. Set 0.05 mm layers as the initial baseline, using the resin maker’s profile for the exact printer and material.
  4. Run an exposure test for the chosen resin, color, printer, and layer height; do not assume example timings are interchangeable.
  5. Tilt the boat to manage hull and deck cross-sections while keeping visible surfaces clear of support tips where possible.
  6. Add light supports to appropriate hidden or robust surfaces, reinforce vulnerable areas, and inspect the sliced preview for islands and disappearing detail.
  7. Print, then wash, dry, cure, and remove supports according to the resin maker’s instructions.
  8. Inspect the same key features under magnification and record the setup before changing one variable for the next print.

This workflow uses the Benchy as both a miniature and a calibration object: the hull reveals orientation and support trade-offs, while the rails, cabin, and roof show whether the chosen scale and settings retained the details you intended to keep.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a miniature Benchy to compare different resin printers?

Yes, if you keep the resin, scale, orientation, layer height, and support approach as consistent as possible, and record each machine’s calibrated exposure. Results from different machines are not a strict apples-to-apples test if those conditions differ.

Why does an exposure time that worked last month fail now?

An exposure value is specific to the resin, color, printer, layer height, and vat condition. If one of those changes, use the relevant manufacturer profile as a starting point and validate it with a fresh exposure test.

Should I print the full-size Benchy before making a miniature?

A full-size print can make it easier to see the model’s intended features and use it as a reference, but it is not required to prepare a miniature. The miniature’s own sliced preview and exposure test are the more direct checks for its scale and print setup.
