Shiny odds are the chance of a shiny result on each eligible encounter or egg—not a countdown to when one must appear. A commonly cited modern baseline is 1 in 4,096, but the rate and which methods affect it depend on the game and encounter type.

What “1 in N” shiny odds mean

A 1-in-N rate means each eligible Pokémon generation has a 1/N chance of being shiny. It does not mean a shiny is guaranteed after N tries. A hunt can succeed quickly, take far longer than N attempts, or—in principle—never produce one.

For example, if each roll independently has a 1-in-4,096 chance, the probability of seeing at least one shiny after n eligible rolls is 1 − (1 − 1/4,096)n. After 4,096 such rolls, that works out to about 63%, not 100%. The count only describes the chance across that many rolls; it does not change the odds of the next one.

What are the baseline shiny odds?

One commonly cited modern baseline is 1 in 4,096. Smogon University lists that rate for eligible encounters, and its Sword and Shield guidance gives about 1 in 1,366 for ordinary eligible encounters with the Shiny Charm. A Scarlet and Violet calculator from PokéTools gives the same baseline and approximately the same Charm-adjusted example. These are reference figures, not an official franchise-wide rate: the applicable odds depend on the game and the encounter category.

Pokémon Support says it does not provide gameplay tips or information, so it does not substantiate these mechanics. The cited numerical guidance comes from community references and a calculator rather than an official published statistic.

How the Shiny Charm changes odds

The Shiny Charm improves shiny odds in many games, but its effect is not universal across every title and kind of Pokémon generation. For ordinary eligible encounters, the cited Sword and Shield and Scarlet and Violet references give an example of roughly 1 in 1,366 with the Charm, compared with 1 in 4,096 at baseline. Some game or encounter categories may handle the Charm differently or not apply its effect.

Check the exact game and target encounter before using a Charm-adjusted rate. “I have the Shiny Charm” alone is not enough to establish the odds for every Pokémon.

How encounter methods change the odds

Games can add rolls or modifiers through different systems. Those mechanics are title-specific; a method or bonus in one game should not be assumed to work in another.

Game and method What the cited references establish What to keep in mind
Sword and Shield: ordinary eligible encounters Smogon University cites 1 in 4,096 as the baseline and about 1 in 1,366 with the Shiny Charm. Brilliant Aura mechanics are separate from Scarlet and Violet’s systems and affect only certain encounter slots.
Sword and Shield: Brilliant Aura Smogon University describes Brilliant Aura as associated with battling or catching a species, with effects for certain encounter slots. Do not apply its effects to every encounter or treat it as a universal multiplier.
Scarlet and Violet: ordinary eligible encounters The PokéTools calculator lists 1 in 4,096 at baseline and approximately 1 in 1,366 with the Shiny Charm. These are Scarlet and Violet reference figures, not guaranteed rates for every category.
Scarlet and Violet: Masuda Method breeding The PokéTools calculator lists approximately 1 in 683 without the Shiny Charm and 1 in 512 with it. These are game-specific egg odds. Wild-encounter bonuses such as Sparkling Power or outbreak progress should not be applied to eggs without title-specific evidence.
Scarlet and Violet: outbreaks and sandwiches The PokéTools calculator describes shiny-roll bonuses and combinations involving mass outbreak progress and sandwich Sparkling Power for eligible wild spawns. The exact result depends on the applicable setup and eligible spawn; do not transfer these bonuses to other games or encounter types.

The table is not a complete cross-generation odds chart. Other Pokémon games use their own systems, including chain or outbreak mechanics, and the cited references do not establish reliable rates for every title.

How Masuda Method breeding works

The Masuda Method uses breeding Pokémon from games with different language settings to improve the chance of a shiny egg. For Scarlet and Violet, the PokéTools calculator reports approximately 1 in 683 without the Shiny Charm and 1 in 512 with it. Treat those as game-specific calculator figures, not universal breeding odds.

Eggs and wild encounters are separate kinds of shiny rolls. A wild-spawn bonus does not automatically affect eggs, and a breeding rate should not be used to estimate an overworld hunt.

Does resetting improve shiny odds?

Resetting does not multiply the chance of an individual roll. It can let you try a fixed encounter again or refresh a spawn, but only when the target is eligible to be shiny and the game determines its shiny state again after the relevant save point or reset sequence.

Whether that happens depends on the specific game, Pokémon, encounter type, and when the result is set. Some encounters may be shiny-locked, and some outcomes may not be rerolled by the reset a player uses. The cited references do not establish reset timing and eligibility for every target, so do not assume that saving and resetting will work for a particular Pokémon without title-specific confirmation.

How to compare hunting methods

A better chance per roll does not automatically make a method faster overall. Compare the whole hunt, not just the fraction shown for one encounter.

  • Odds per eligible roll: Confirm whether the figure applies to an encounter, spawn, or egg.
  • Attempt generation time: Consider how quickly you can produce another eligible roll.
  • Setup: Account for the in-game time or items required by the method.
  • Charm effect: Check whether the Shiny Charm applies to that game and encounter category.
  • Eligibility: Confirm that the target can be shiny and that the method rerolls its result.
  • Desired result: If you want specific traits, such as egg moves or a particular encounter origin, include those in the choice rather than optimizing odds alone.

How to interpret your hunt count

Use the listed odds to understand the chance of each eligible roll, not to predict a personal finish date. At a 1-in-N rate, the chance of at least one shiny across repeated independent rolls can be calculated as 1 − (1 − 1/N)n, where n is the number of eligible rolls. The rolls must actually be independent and eligible for that estimate to fit; an attempt that does not generate a new shiny determination is not another roll.

Because attempt speed differs between methods, a high per-roll chance and a short hunt are not the same thing. Estimate time only after accounting for the actual method, its setup, and how long each eligible roll takes.
