For most households, run your washer’s tub-clean cycle about once a month. Treat that as a starting point, not a universal rule: manufacturers set different schedules, and the dispenser, door gasket, and drain filter may need attention more often. Check your model’s manual for its cycle, cleaning agent, and component-specific instructions.
How often to clean each part of a washing machine
A tub-clean cycle is only one part of washer maintenance. Follow the instructions for your specific model, since manufacturer schedules differ and usage or visible residue can affect how often cleaning is needed.

These are manufacturer care recommendations, not measured estimates of odor, breakdowns, or washer lifespan. They do not establish that a particular cleaning frequency extends a machine’s life by a specific amount.
How to run the tub-clean cycle
- Find the right cycle. Look for Tub Clean, Clean Washer, Self Clean, or an equivalent cycle in the controls or owner’s manual. Use the washer’s reminder if it has one.
- Check the manual for the cleaner. The permitted product and amount depend on the washer. Whirlpool lists affresh washer cleaner, liquid chlorine bleach, or another washer-cleaning product for its Clean Washer cycle. LG describes using a store-bought tub cleaner for Tub Clean. These are brand-specific instructions, not a universal chemical recommendation.
- Run the cycle as directed. Add only the specified cleaner in the specified location, then run the dedicated cycle according to the manual. Do not assume tablets are required.
For product choices, confirm that a washer-cleaning product is compatible with your exact model before using it.

What to do between tub cleans
- Wipe and dry the door and gasket. LG advises drying the door and gasket at the end of each wash day; Samsung recommends weekly wiping of the door, gasket, and detergent area. On a front-loader, check inside the gasket folds for trapped moisture or residue.
- Clean the detergent drawer when it needs it. Follow the manual’s removal directions; schedules vary by brand and model. Whirlpool says usage, water hardness, and visible residue can affect how often its dispenser should be cleaned.
- Check whether your model has a cleanable filter. Filter access and procedures are not universal. LG’s front-load instructions call for unplugging the washer and draining residual water before removing its pump filter, then cleaning the filter and opening with a soft-bristled brush and warm water. Use those steps only if they match your model’s instructions.
If the washer smells musty
Use the manufacturer’s troubleshooting instructions rather than simply adding a stronger cleaner or running extra cycles indefinitely. LG advises running Tub Clean weekly for three consecutive weeks when a musty smell is present; contact repair support if the problem persists. LG also warns against applying straight, undiluted bleach to the gasket because it can deteriorate the material.

Washer designs, model families, regions, usage, and manufacturer recommendations differ. Even one brand may prescribe different intervals for the drum, gasket, dispenser, and filter. For example, Panasonic’s cited front-load guidance sets a two-month tub-clean interval, while its drawer guidance calls for weekly rinsing. Use the guidance for your own model rather than assuming front-loaders or top-loaders all share one schedule.
