There is no dependable universal annual cost for running and maintaining a robot mower. Your total depends on the mower and lawn, how often it runs, your electricity tariff, blade and battery costs, installation type, and whether you pay for dealer service. Estimate those items separately; keep the mower’s purchase price out of the annual operating total unless you also want to calculate ownership cost over time.
What goes into a robot mower’s running cost?
A useful budget separates recurring operating costs from occasional maintenance and repairs. The main items are electricity, replacement blades, eventual battery replacement, seasonal storage or service, and repairs to the mower or its installation. The purchase price is a separate upfront cost. If you want a broader ownership estimate, you can add it as a separate line and decide how many years of use to spread it across.
| Cost category | What determines it | How to estimate it |
|---|---|---|
| Electricity | The mower’s consumption, operating schedule, months in use, and your local price per kilowatt-hour (kWh) | Estimated monthly kWh × months operated × your price per kWh |
| Blades | Blade price and replacement needs for the exact mower model; wear varies with use and lawn conditions | Expected blade sets per year × current price per compatible set |
| Battery | Model-specific battery availability, replacement price, and service life | For an annualized planning figure, divide the replacement price by the expected years of service |
| Dealer service | Whether you choose service, its local price, and what it includes | Use the service provider’s current price and scope; do not assume service is included |
| Repairs and installation parts | Mower design, installation type, damage, and the parts needed | Include only costs that apply to your setup, such as compatible boundary-wire parts |
Retail prices, dealer charges, electricity tariffs, and parts availability vary by location and change over time. The figures available from manufacturers do not establish an average annual cost for the robot-mower market, so a single total without your model and local inputs would be misleading.

Electricity cost depends on energy use, not simply on the fact that a mower is electric. Flymo says an EasiLife maintaining a 500 m² lawn uses roughly 4 kWh per month. That is a manufacturer example for a particular mower family and lawn size, not an industry average or a prediction for another model, lawn, or mowing schedule. The cited Flymo FAQ does not state a publication year.

To turn a monthly consumption estimate into an annual cost, use:
Annual electricity cost = estimated monthly kWh × months operated × local price per kWh
For the Flymo example, the first input is roughly 4 kWh per month. Use the number of months your mower actually operates—not automatically 12—and the price on your electricity bill. If you operate it for 10 months, for example, the energy estimate would be about 40 kWh for those months before multiplying by your tariff. That is an arithmetic illustration based on Flymo’s example, not a consumption estimate for other mowers.

Use a consumption figure for your model and a lawn area and schedule close to your own wherever the manufacturer provides one. If the manufacturer does not provide a comparable figure, do not substitute the Flymo number as though it were typical. Your tariff may also differ by time of use; use the applicable rate if your electricity pricing varies by time.

How often do blades need replacing?
Blades are a recurring consumable, but the replacement interval is not the same for every lawn or mower. Husqvarna says worn blades can produce an uneven cut, increase battery and energy use, and reduce mowing efficiency. How quickly blades wear depends on mowing frequency, lawn size, grass type, and seasonal growth.
For a useful estimate, check the exact model’s blade guidance and current price, then consider how intensively you operate the mower and the conditions on your lawn. Count the compatible blade sets you expect to use in a year and multiply by the price for those sets. Do not budget from the price of a blade that does not fit your model: compatibility matters, and a low price for an incompatible part does not reduce your actual maintenance cost.
Blade wear can also affect costs beyond the replacement part itself. If dull or worn blades leave an uneven cut or reduce mowing efficiency, replacing them when needed may help the mower cut as intended. The manufacturer’s warning does not provide a quantified amount of extra electricity or battery use, so do not add an unsupported energy surcharge to your estimate.
When might you need to replace the battery?
A battery is an eventual, model-dependent expense rather than a predictable annual bill. Flymo estimates the EasiLife battery lifespan at approximately 2–4 years, depending on lawn size and operating hours. That estimate applies to EasiLife; it should not be generalized to other robot mowers. The cited FAQ does not state a publication year.

Check whether a replacement battery is available for your exact model and what it currently costs in your market. If you want to compare long-term budgets, you can divide that replacement price by the expected years of service. For example, a model-specific replacement price divided by a model-specific expected service life gives an annualized planning allowance. It is not a bill charged each year, and the result is only as useful as the price and lifespan assumptions you use.
Do not assume that all mower batteries have the same service life or replacement price. If a maker does not state a lifespan, leave that input uncertain rather than borrowing Flymo’s EasiLife estimate. Also verify availability and compatibility before relying on a replacement price from a different model or market.
Does seasonal storage or dealer service add to the cost?
Winter preparation can involve both a practical storage requirement and an optional paid service. Husqvarna recommends storing the mower, charging station, and power supply indoors for winter. Its service recommendation for Automower may include cleaning, diagnostics, wear parts, blade replacement, battery checks, and safety checks. The exact local charge and the specific work included are not stated in the cited service information, so ask the dealer for a current itemized scope before adding a figure to your budget.

A recommendation to use dealer service does not establish that every owner must pay for it, nor that a particular service package is included with the mower. If you service the mower through a dealer, record the price, frequency, and included parts; if you do not, do not count a dealer charge in your annual estimate. Storage itself can require a suitable indoor place, but no monetary amount for storage is established here.

Can the installation type affect repair and maintenance costs?
Yes. Installation design determines which parts may be relevant if the boundary system needs work. Traditional Husqvarna Automower models use physical boundary wire. Some models support EPOS virtual boundaries, while Husqvarna notes that physical wire may be useful where satellite coverage is poor. These options are not interchangeable for every mower or site, so check the exact model’s supported installation before comparing their costs.
A compatible wire-guided installation may make boundary wire or connectors relevant replacement parts. For a model using virtual boundaries, do not assume there is no installation or connectivity cost: the available information does not establish that every virtual-boundary setup is cost-free or that it avoids all related expenses. Compare the installation method, site requirements, replacement parts, and any locally applicable service costs for the specific model. Do not add boundary-wire kits or connectors to a budget unless your mower uses compatible physical wire.
How to build an estimate for your mower
- Identify the exact mower and installation. Record the model, lawn area, whether it uses physical boundary wire or virtual boundaries, and any manufacturer consumption or maintenance figures that apply to it.
- Estimate electricity for your schedule. Multiply the model-specific monthly kWh estimate by the months you expect to operate the mower, then multiply by your local price per kWh. If no comparable consumption figure is available, mark electricity as unknown rather than presenting another model’s example as yours.
- Add compatible blades. Check the exact model’s blade price and replacement guidance. Estimate the number of sets based on the guidance and your use, then multiply by the current local price.
- Account for the battery separately. Check the replacement battery’s price, compatibility, and model-specific expected life. If you want an annualized reserve, divide the price by that expected life and label the result as a planning allowance, not a recurring yearly charge.
- Include service only if you plan to buy it. Ask a local dealer what the quoted service includes and whether parts such as blades are already covered. Avoid counting the same replacement part both in a service quote and as a separate purchase.
- Add installation or repair parts that apply. For a compatible wire-guided mower, consider relevant boundary-wire parts; otherwise, do not include them by default. Add other repairs only when you have a model- and situation-specific reason to expect them.
- Keep assumptions visible. Record the operating months, tariff, blade-set estimate, battery assumptions, service scope, and any repair items. Update prices when you receive a current quote or parts price.
This method produces a budget tied to your mower and circumstances. It does not create a universal annual average, and an annualized battery allowance should remain distinct from money you actually spend in a particular year.

What to compare before choosing a model
A low purchase price alone does not show which mower will cost less to operate. Compare the recurring and conditional costs using like-for-like assumptions:

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Electricity: Look for consumption figures for a similar lawn area and operating schedule. A figure for a small lawn or different mower is not a fair direct comparison.
- Blades: Check the price of compatible blades and the manufacturer’s replacement guidance. Consider how lawn size, grass type, mowing frequency, and seasonal growth affect wear.
- Battery: Confirm whether a replacement is available for the exact model, its current local price, and whether the maker states an expected service life.
- Boundary approach: Establish whether the mower uses physical boundary wire or supports virtual boundaries, and whether your site conditions affect that choice. Physical wire may be useful where satellite coverage is poor.
- Service: Compare the local price and scope of optional dealer maintenance, including whether cleaning, diagnostics, wear parts, blade replacement, battery checks, or safety checks are included.
Use these inputs to compare expected costs over the same period, lawn size, and operating schedule. If a maker does not publish a comparable value, treat it as unknown rather than filling the gap with a competitor’s product-specific example.
Why there is no reliable universal annual total
The available manufacturer figures establish useful examples and cost drivers, not a market-wide annual ownership total. Flymo’s electricity and battery estimates are for EasiLife under stated conditions; Husqvarna’s blade, service, storage, and installation guidance identifies considerations but does not provide a general annual bill. Electricity tariffs, retail prices, dealer charges, and repair needs also vary by location and over time.
The most accurate answer is therefore a line-item estimate: use your mower’s consumption and your tariff for electricity, compatible part prices for blades and batteries, the actual price and scope of any service, and installation costs only where they apply. Keep upfront purchase cost separate, and state every assumption behind any total.
