There is no single price for a 3D-printed project. Estimate your specific print by adding its material, electricity, machine use, hands-on labor, finishing, consumables, and a realistic allowance for waste or failed attempts. If you are selling the part, calculate that production cost first, then add business overhead, fees, shipping, and profit.
How to estimate the cost of one print
For a filament print, use the slicer’s material and time estimates, your actual filament purchase price, your local electricity rate, and explicit assumptions for equipment wear and labor. A practical formula is:
Production cost = material + electricity + machine wear + labor + finishing and consumables + expected failure cost
Keep the assumptions visible. In particular, failure and overhead may be handled differently by different calculators; choose a convention and avoid counting the same cost twice. The CalcCorp calculator, Calculator Collection calculator, and Arzentiq calculator illustrate ways to organize the arithmetic, but their defaults are assumptions, not universal rates.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Material
For filament, multiply the grams in the slicer estimate by the price per gram: grams used ÷ 1,000 × the price you paid per kilogram. Use the actual spool price rather than a generic online price. Include supports, purge, brim, or likely waste if they are not already counted in the slicer estimate, and state any extra allowance. A 10% failure buffer is one calculator’s configurable example, not a standard failure rate.
Electricity
Calculate average printer power in kilowatts × print hours × your electricity price per kilowatt-hour. In watts, that is average power ÷ 1,000 × hours × price per kWh. Use average draw while printing when you can; the maximum rating on a power supply is not a measurement of the print’s energy use.

For context, the U.S. Energy Information Administration reported 2025 annual average retail electricity prices of 17.30¢/kWh for residential customers and 13.41¢/kWh for commercial customers. The 2025 figures are preliminary in the February 2026 data release; they are U.S. averages, not a substitute for your tariff. Check the EIA Electric Power Monthly, Table 5.3, and use your own bill for a project estimate. The EIA explanation of electricity prices also describes why rates vary.
Machine wear
If you want to account for the printer’s use over time, divide its purchase price by an assumed service life in hours, then multiply by the print hours. For example, the structure is printer price ÷ assumed lifetime hours × this print’s hours. State the lifetime you assume: 5,000 hours is a calculator default, not a guarantee of how long a printer will last. This estimate is useful when comparing use of an owned printer with outsourcing, but it is only as reliable as the lifetime assumption.

Labor, finishing, and consumables
Include hands-on time for setup, removing supports, cleanup, and any post-processing. For resin prints, account for washing and curing when those steps are part of the workflow. Add relevant consumables rather than treating an unattended machine run as labor-free. If you price labor, state the rate and the time counted.
Waste and failed prints
A failed job can consume both material and machine time, so include an allowance when it reflects your actual workflow. Applied Sciences reported 15% waste by weight in the FDM process studied in its 2025 paper, attributing it primarily to supports and failed prints. That is a result from one studied process, not a universal waste or failure rate for every printer, part, or technology. Use your own job history where available, or state that an allowance is an estimate.

Cost to make a part versus a price to sell it
The production-cost formula covers the resources used to make a part. A selling quote may also need business overhead, marketplace or payment fees, packing, shipping, and profit. Add these after estimating production cost, and list them separately so the customer-facing price is not mistaken for the printer’s material-and-electricity cost.

| Cost factor | What to compare |
|---|---|
| Material and waste | Material quantity and price for each process, including supports and relevant waste. |
| Machine or cycle time | The time required for the job on the equipment being considered. |
| Energy | Average power, operating time, and the applicable electricity rate. |
| Equipment | Printer cost and a stated service-life assumption. |
| Labor and finishing | Setup, cleanup, support removal, and process-specific post-processing such as resin washing and curing. |
| Failure risk | An allowance grounded in the workflow being compared, not a generic percentage. |
The available study includes FDM PLA, but does not establish a general dollar-per-project comparison between FDM and SLA. For either process, use actual material prices and quantities, cycle time, power, equipment assumptions, finishing effort, and failure experience rather than assigning an unsupported universal price.
Make the estimate useful for your project
- Start with the specific part. Record the slicer’s material quantity and print time, including supports and other generated material where shown.
- Enter prices you actually face. Use your filament or resin purchase price and local electricity tariff, not a national average as though it applied everywhere.
- Choose and label assumptions. State the equipment lifetime, labor rate, and any waste or failure allowance. Separate measured inputs from estimates.
- Add the steps beyond printing. Count hands-on setup, cleanup, finishing, and consumables that the project requires.
- Keep a sale quote separate. Add overhead, fees, packing, shipping, and profit only when you are calculating a selling price.
For filament, PLA is a common material to price this way: match the filament diameter to the printer and use the price you paid. The calculation applies to your chosen spool and print; it does not imply that a particular brand or material is best for every job.
