Microsoft’s Ireland energy projects are three different experiments, not one giant wind-farm testbed. The 30 MW Lenalea wind farm in County Donegal supplies renewable electricity under a long-term power-purchase agreement; batteries in Microsoft’s Dublin data center test how backup power can also support the grid; and a separate 2024 pilot with ESB tested hydrogen fuel cells for backup generation. Together, they explore how data centers can use cleaner energy while operating on a constrained electricity system.

What wind farm is linked to Microsoft’s Ireland data centers?

Lenalea is a seven-turbine wind farm in central County Donegal, about 13 km southwest of Letterkenny. SSE Renewables reported that the project reached full power and connected to Ireland’s national grid in late 2023. Its installed capacity is 30 MW, and its Vestas V117 turbines operate in a 4.3 MW configuration, according to SSE Renewables in 2024.

In May 2024, SSE Renewables and FuturEnergy Ireland announced a long-term corporate power-purchase agreement (CPPA) with Microsoft. The electricity contributes to Microsoft’s corporate goal of powering its data-center operations with 100% renewable energy by 2025. That is a company-wide target, not evidence that Lenalea directly supplies every Microsoft data center or that the Donegal wind farm alone covers the Dublin campus’s electricity use.

SSE Renewables also estimated an annual community-benefit fund of €150,000, dependent on the wind farm’s performance. That estimate is distinct from the project’s 30 MW installed capacity: one describes a potential annual fund, the other the facility’s generating capacity.

How can a data center help stabilize the grid?

The Dublin UPS battery trial

A data center’s uninterruptible power supply (UPS) uses batteries to keep equipment powered if its normal electricity supply is interrupted. In a 7 July 2022 technical feature, Microsoft said lithium-ion batteries in its Dublin data center had been certified, tested and approved to provide grid services while retaining their emergency-backup role.

Through Enel X, Microsoft participates in EirGrid’s market for ancillary services. When grid supply is tight, participating batteries can discharge electricity to help meet system needs. That can reduce reliance on fossil-fuel power plants kept running as spinning reserve and may help reduce the curtailment of renewable generation. The batteries are not simply repurposed as a permanent power source for the data center: their emergency-backup function remains part of the arrangement.

What the emissions estimate means

Microsoft commissioned Baringa to model the possible effect of grid-interactive UPS systems. Baringa’s 2022 analysis estimated that about two million metric tons of CO2 could potentially be avoided in 2025 if such systems replaced fossil-fuel grid services in Ireland and Northern Ireland. This is a modeled, conditional estimate—not a measured emissions reduction at Microsoft’s Dublin site.

In that same 2022 article, Microsoft said variable renewables already supplied more than 35% of electricity on the island of Ireland and forecast that they could reach 80% by 2030; it also said nearly 400 wind farms generated more than 35% at that time. Those are figures and a forecast from the 2022 account, not current measurements. Microsoft senior program manager Nur Bernhardt described the grid service as “a way for us to unlock the value of the datacenter.”

Is Microsoft using green hydrogen for data centers?

Microsoft and ESB announced an eight-week hydrogen fuel-cell pilot at Microsoft’s Dublin campus on 27 September 2024. ESB’s fuel cells supplied up to 250 kW during the pilot. Microsoft described it as the first use of hydrogen fuel cells to provide electricity to a Microsoft data center in Europe.

At the point of generation, the fuel cells’ only by-product was pure water, according to the announcement. That description concerns the fuel cell’s operation; it does not by itself establish the full lifecycle emissions of producing and delivering the hydrogen. Nor does an eight-week pilot establish that hydrogen has become a permanent or large-scale power source for Microsoft’s data centers.

Microsoft vice president Eoin Doherty called the project a “pioneering first for Microsoft in Europe.” ESB executive director Jim Dollard said the company believes green hydrogen will have an important role in a future net-zero energy system. Those statements describe the companies’ aims and expectations, while the pilot’s documented scale was up to 250 kW for eight weeks.

How the wind farm, batteries and hydrogen differ

Project Energy role Scale and status What it demonstrates
Lenalea wind farm Renewable electricity generation 30 MW installed capacity; seven turbines; connected to Ireland’s grid in late 2023, according to SSE Renewables (2024) A generating asset linked to Microsoft through a long-term CPPA announced in May 2024
Dublin data-center UPS batteries Energy storage and grid services, while retaining emergency backup Microsoft reported certified, tested and approved grid-service use in its 7 July 2022 feature; a comparable discharge capacity is not stated there Data-center backup batteries can also provide ancillary services to the grid
ESB hydrogen fuel-cell pilot Backup electricity generation Up to 250 kW for an eight-week pilot at the Dublin campus, announced by Microsoft and ESB on 27 September 2024 Hydrogen fuel cells were tested as a way to supply electricity to a Microsoft data center in Europe

The projects operate at different points in the energy system. Lenalea generates electricity; UPS batteries store electricity and can discharge it when the grid needs support; hydrogen fuel cells generate electricity for a limited pilot. The wind farm’s megawatt figure is installed generating capacity, while the hydrogen figure is the pilot’s maximum output. The 2022 Microsoft account does not state a comparable UPS capacity, so the figures do not support a direct performance comparison.

Why the Irish grid context matters

Data centers’ electricity demand is a national grid issue in Ireland, not just a question about one company. An Associated Press report published on 19 December 2024 said Irish data centers consumed 21% of national electricity in 2023. The report also said grid constraints led EirGrid to halt new Dublin-area data-center connections until 2028. These figures describe Ireland’s data-center sector and connection policy, not Microsoft’s individual consumption or a guarantee about every project’s connection status.

Microsoft’s April 2024 Ireland factsheet reported that its data centers used renewable biofuel alongside natural-gas backup generators. That company-reported detail provides context for the backup-power question: the hydrogen pilot tested an additional option, but the announcement does not establish that it replaced the existing backup systems.

Grid-interactive batteries and alternative backup fuels address different parts of this challenge. Battery services may help balance the electricity system, while renewable procurement can support generation and fuel-cell trials can explore backup options. None alone removes the need to plan grid capacity, manage demand or ensure that data centers can keep operating safely.
