In 2016, Microsoft and the University of Washington reported storing and retrieving 200 MB of digital data in synthetic DNA—a record-setting demonstration at the time. The data was encoded as DNA bases, chemically synthesized, and later read back with sequencing and error correction. It showed that DNA can preserve digital files in an extraordinarily compact form, not that it was ready to replace a hard drive or cloud account.
What Microsoft and UW stored in DNA
The 200 MB collection brought together files chosen for both cultural value and technical variety: an HD music video by OK Go, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in more than 100 languages, the top 100 books from Project Gutenberg, and the Crop Trust’s seed database. The later peer-reviewed account described 35 files in total.
In 2018, the team reported recovering those files without bit errors. The experiment used more than 13 million oligonucleotides—short DNA strands—and about 2 billion nucleotides, the individual DNA bases that make up those strands. The claim was about a successful demonstration, not a commercially available archive.
How digital files become DNA
Computers represent information as binary bits, 0s and 1s. DNA uses four bases, commonly abbreviated A, C, G and T. Software maps groups of bits to sequences of these bases, while adding techniques that help avoid problematic sequences and identify errors.

- Encode: Software converts the files’ binary data into sequences of A, C, G and T, with addressing and error-correction information so files can be identified and recovered.
- Synthesize: A commercial provider manufactured the short DNA sequences in parallel. The many strands were pooled and dehydrated for storage.
- Select a file: To retrieve a file, the team re-suspended the DNA and used PCR (polymerase chain reaction) to amplify the target sequences selectively.
- Read and reconstruct: A DNA sequencer determined the bases in the selected strands. Software then used the addressing and error-correction data to reconstruct the original bits and files.
Microsoft partner architect Douglas Carmean described the stored material as “much smaller than the tip of a pencil.” That compact physical sample held millions of distinct synthesized strands; it was not one continuous DNA molecule.
Why the 200 MB result mattered
Earlier DNA-storage demonstrations had handled far less data. Recovering 35 files totaling 200 MB without bit errors established a much larger end-to-end demonstration: information was encoded, synthesized, selected, sequenced and reconstructed. The system also demonstrated random access: PCR could target selected stored sequences rather than requiring every file to be read in one pass.

DNA’s potential density is striking. The 2018 paper estimated a theoretical density of about 1018 bytes per cubic millimeter—roughly 10 million times the density of magnetic tape. That is a projection based on DNA’s physical properties, not a claim that an operational DNA archive currently achieves that density once laboratory equipment, handling and access systems are included.
DNA storage versus conventional archives
| Factor | DNA storage | Magnetic tape, hard drives and cloud archives |
|---|---|---|
| Density | Potentially about 1018 bytes/mm3, or 107 times magnetic-tape density, according to the 2018 paper; this is a potential physical density, not a demonstrated complete archive system. | The cited paper provides a relative comparison with magnetic tape, not a single density figure for tape, hard drives and cloud systems. |
| Longevity | Potential for preservation over thousands of years under suitable conditions; this is a long-term potential, not a duration measured by the 200 MB experiment. | Not stated in the cited sources as a directly comparable figure; conventional media and services have different lifetimes and maintenance needs. |
| Write and read speed | Chemical synthesis and sequencing are laboratory processes. The cited sources identify speed as a barrier but do not give a directly comparable throughput for the 200 MB test. | Not stated in the cited sources as a directly comparable benchmark. |
| Random access | PCR selectively amplified requested files in the system, demonstrating a route to file-level access. | Not stated in the cited sources as a comparable measurement across tape, drives and cloud. |
| Recovery errors | The 2018 experiment reported no bit errors in the recovered 35 files. | Not stated in the cited sources as a same-conditions comparison. |
| Cost and automation | Synthesis, sequencing and automation costs remained barriers; the sources do not establish a current price for storing or retrieving data this way. | Not stated in the cited sources as a comparable cost figure. |
DNA is therefore most compelling as a possible medium for dense, long-lived archival storage where data can remain untouched for long periods. It is not a practical substitute for everyday storage, where people expect inexpensive, fast writes and reads.

What the 2019 automation prototype proved—and did not
In 2019, Microsoft researchers reported a prototype that automatically wrote, stored and read a five-byte message, “hello,” using DNA. The work demonstrated that laboratory steps could be linked in an automated system. It was not a demonstration of commercial capacity, speed or cost efficiency.
Separately, UW News reported that researchers had demonstrated storing 1 GB in DNA in 2019. That later capacity milestone did not, by itself, resolve the practical hurdles: DNA synthesis and sequencing were still slow and costly, and an archive system needed robust automation. UW senior research scientist Chris Takahashi explained why: “You can’t have a bunch of people running around a data center with pipettes — it’s too prone to human error, it’s too costly and the footprint would be too large.”

Is DNA a practical hard drive, and can you buy one?
No consumer DNA hard drive or cloud-storage replacement is established by these demonstrations. The experiments relied on specialized DNA synthesis, laboratory handling, PCR and sequencing. The cited sources do not report a consumer product or current price for writing and retrieving personal files in DNA. Buying a generic DNA kit, hard drive or cloud plan would not give you access to this system.
The longer-term goal is to make DNA storage operate behind the scenes like an archival data-center service. Microsoft principal researcher Karin Strauss described the vision as a service where users send bits to a data center and later retrieve them as ordinary files. That is a long-term goal, not a currently available storage offering.
