DayZ loot respawn is controlled by the Central Economy (CE). For individual items, edit the relevant entry in types.xml; for grouped encounters such as crash sites, edit events.xml and its spawn-position files. Set nominal to define the target amount, use restock="0" for the shortest respawn delay, and treat lifetime as a cleanup timer rather than a spawn-speed control. Stored items, nearby players, invalid XML and uncertain min behavior can all make a server appear to have broken respawn.
What controls loot respawn in DayZ?
DayZ’s Central Economy (CE) continuously compares the items that exist with the limits in the mission economy files. It creates, leaves in place or removes objects according to those rules rather than respawning every pickup on a simple fixed timer. The result is that a player can empty a town and see new items later, while another location appears empty because its item category is already at its cap elsewhere on the map.

The practical division is:
types.xml: individual item classes such as weapons, clothing, tools, food and medical supplies.events.xml: groups of objects generated by an event, such as a helicopter or crash-site encounter. Event entries use positions defined incfgeventspawns.xml.- Other economy files: Files such as
cfgspawnabletypes.xmlandcfgeconomycore.xmlcan affect related spawning behavior, but the available evidence does not establish their exact role for ordinary loot tuning. Do not change them casually.
Values below reflect descriptions repeated in hosting guides and community forum discussions. They are useful operating assumptions, not a published specification of the game’s source code. Test changes on a private server or a controlled restart before applying them to a public community.
How a types.xml item is replenished
Each item class has an economy entry. The CE counts eligible copies on the map and in locations included by the entry’s flags, then works toward the configured target. A simplified entry looks like this:

</type>Do not copy this as a universal best-practice configuration. The item name, existing flags and stack settings must match your server’s files. Change one variable at a time and record the result.
nominal: the target population
nominal is generally described as the number of copies the economy aims to keep available. Raising it permits a larger total population of that item; lowering it makes the item scarcer. It is a map-wide target for the relevant economy category, not a promise that every town will contain one copy.

Because the value is a target, increasing it does not necessarily create all additional copies immediately. The CE still has to find a valid spawn, satisfy the item’s flags and wait through any applicable restock behavior. A high nominal value can also make other items in the same economy compete for available spawn capacity, depending on the rest of the configuration.
min: do not assume the field’s meaning
The meaning of min is not settled in the available technical descriptions. One hosting guide presents it as a trigger: when the live count falls below the value, the server queues more copies. Forum posts instead describe it as a guaranteed floor, or as a usage-group weighting in which a value such as 100 represents an average. These interpretations produce different tuning decisions, so no single definition should be treated as authoritative.
Keep the existing relationship between nominal and min when making a small change, then measure the live count after a restart and after players remove items. If changing only min produces an unexpected result, restore the backup rather than compensating by making a much larger nominal change.

restock: delay or pacing
Descriptions agree that restock="0" represents the fastest setting: there is no configured delay before eligible replenishment. Positive values slow the process. One explanation treats the value as seconds before each additional item is spawned until the nominal target is reached; another describes it as a delay that starts after pickup. Since those mechanisms are reported differently, use the value as a pacing control rather than promising players an exact second-by-second schedule.

It only removes the configured restock delay. If an item remains absent with restock set to zero, investigate those other conditions first.
lifetime: cleanup, not respawn speed
lifetime is measured in seconds and is described as the time an untouched item can remain before the CE removes it. Community examples use 3600 for approximately one hour; very large values are used when an administrator wants an item to survive until a server restart. Example values such as 10,800 or 14,400 seconds are illustrations in guides, not confirmed universal defaults.
Changing lifetime does not make the CE spawn an item sooner. A long lifetime can leave unwanted objects occupying the map and make a location look permanently full. A short lifetime clears abandoned loot more aggressively, but players who are travelling between towns may arrive after useful items have been removed.
Flags and the hidden inventory count
Flags such as count_in_hoarder, count_in_cargo and related count options determine where the CE includes copies in its total. When a flag counts stored gear, items in bases, tents, vehicles or other containers can consume the item’s global allowance. Once the allowance is reached, new ground spawns may stop even though a player sees no copy at the current location.

This is a common explanation for “loot stopped respawning” reports. Before raising nominal values, inspect whether players have stockpiled the affected item. Increasing the cap without considering hoarded gear can produce an unexpectedly large total after a wipe or after stored containers become accessible.
Why a location can stay empty
The global cap has already been reached
The CE counts according to the item’s configured scope, not merely what is visible on the road or inside the building where you are standing. Search bases, tents, vehicles and storage areas for the item category, and check whether the relevant flags include those locations. A full cap explains why waiting in one town does nothing.
Players are too close to the spawn area
Hosting guidance commonly says that players must be well clear of a spawn point for the complete restock period. The server may postpone creation while someone remains in the area, even when the restock value is low. For a controlled test, have every player leave the town, travel a meaningful distance away and remain away longer than the configured positive restock interval before checking again.
This is also why repeatedly running a short loop through the same buildings is a poor test. Your presence can prevent the condition you are trying to observe.
The economy file is invalid
A single malformed XML tag can stop loot creation, and a more serious syntax error can prevent the server from starting. XML errors include an unclosed element, a mismatched quote, an illegal character or a duplicate structure copied into the wrong section. Preserve an unmodified mission-file backup before every edit. If the server fails after a change, restore the backup first, then validate and reapply one edit at a time.

How event loot differs from ordinary item loot
events.xml describes groups of objects rather than one item class at a time. A crash site, for example, is an event with its own nominal, minimum, lifetime and restock settings. The event uses locations supplied by cfgeventspawns.xml, so changing an item’s types.xml entry does not by itself change how often the crash event appears.
Tune event frequency separately from the contents of the event. If the event appears but contains no expected equipment, inspect the item entries and flags. If the event never appears at all, inspect the event’s own limits, lifetime, restock and position list. Keep event changes isolated so you can tell whether a problem concerns event generation or the items generated inside it.
Step-by-step: safely tune individual loot
- Identify the exact class name. Find the item’s
<type name="...">entry in the active mission’stypes.xml. Do not edit a similarly named class or a file belonging to a different map or mission. - Back up the mission files. Copy
types.xml,events.xmland any file you intend to touch to a dated backup outside the live configuration. Keep the last known-good copy available for immediate restoration. - Record the baseline. Note the current nominal, min, restock, lifetime and flags. Count a sample of the item in the world and, where practical, in storage. Record the server version, map, time of restart and player positions.
- Change one control. For faster replenishment, start by changing
restockto0or by lowering a positive delay. For more total copies, adjustnominal. Do not simultaneously change nominal, min, lifetime and flags; you will not know which edit caused the result. - Preserve valid XML. Keep the existing element order and attributes unless you have a documented reason to change them. Check that every opening element has a matching closing element and that attribute quotes are paired.
- Restart the server. Sources disagree on whether a normal economy refresh is sufficient or a full restart is mandatory. A restart is the reliable operational procedure: stop the server cleanly, replace the file, start it again and watch the startup log for XML errors.
- Run a controlled observation. Remove several copies of the item, leave the spawn area, wait through the selected restock interval and inspect multiple locations. Repeat after another restart if the count does not move.
- Check the cap before escalating. Search storage and review count flags. If the world count plus stored count already satisfies the configured allowance, raising restock will not help.
- Keep a change log. Record the old and new values, restart time, player distance and observed counts. Revert if the change creates excessive clutter, removes scarcity or affects unrelated item categories.
How to tune loot density without destabilizing the economy
Aggressive replenishment
Use a higher nominal target and a zero or very short restock delay when the server’s design goal is abundant equipment and rapid recovery after a raid. This approach reduces downtime for new or defeated players, but it can make exploration less meaningful and can fill the map faster when stored items count toward caps. Monitor high-demand weapons, ammunition and medical supplies separately instead of applying one broad change to every class.

Use lower nominal targets and a positive restock interval when scarcity, travel and player trading are central to the server. A longer lifetime can preserve items that players deliberately leave for others, while a shorter lifetime removes abandoned clutter. Because lifetime is a cleanup timer, pair any lifetime change with an explicit decision about how long uncollected objects should remain—not with an expectation of faster spawning.

Hosted server versus self-hosted server
The tuning method is the same, but administration differs. A self-hosted server normally gives you direct access to the mission files, operating-system backups and the restart schedule. You are responsible for file permissions, validating XML, preserving logs and ensuring the machine can handle the selected economy.

A rented host may expose the same files through a control panel or file-transfer service, but access, restart controls and backup retention depend on the provider. Confirm that you can download the active mission files, restart cleanly, read startup logs and restore a previous version before making live edits. If the panel regenerates files during an update, keep a copy of your custom values and recheck them after maintenance.
Neither arrangement changes the underlying caveats: a restart is the safest way to apply an edit, and the CE can remain at its cap because of stored items or a player occupying the spawn area.
Troubleshooting checklist
No item respawns after changing restock
- Confirm the edited file belongs to the active mission and map.
- Verify that the server was restarted after the file was uploaded.
- Check startup logs for an XML parse error.
- Move all players away from the location for longer than the configured interval.
- Search storage and containers for copies counted by the entry’s flags.
- Confirm that the item’s nominal target is not already satisfied.
The server will not start
- Stop trying new edits and restore the last known-good backup.
- Start the server with the restored file and confirm that it reaches a normal running state.
- Compare the edited version character by character, checking closing tags, quotation marks and the surrounding entry.
- Reapply only one small change, restart and inspect the log before continuing.
Loot is excessive after a nominal increase
Check whether the count flags include hoarded gear and whether the previous population is still present in bases, vehicles or containers. A nominal increase raises the map-wide target; it does not distinguish between an item lying on the ground and one hidden in a stockpile when both are counted. Reduce the value, allow the economy to settle through a restart cycle and measure again rather than deleting random objects.
An event is missing but normal loot works
Inspect the corresponding events.xml entry and its position references in cfgeventspawns.xml. Event limits and timers are independent of an individual item’s types.xml settings. A working item entry cannot create an event whose own configuration prevents spawning.
What remains uncertain and how to test it
Three areas deserve caution. First, the exact semantics of min conflict across published explanations. Second, documentation differs on whether a refresh can apply an edit or whether a full restart is required. Third, descriptions of quantmin and quantmax disagree: one treats them as percentages of stack fullness, while another treats them as the quantity inside a container such as ammunition in a magazine.
Do not redesign those fields from a forum example alone. Build a private test with one item class, a small nominal value and no other simultaneous edits. Record the starting count, remove a known number of copies, leave the area, restart, and observe the count at fixed intervals. Repeat with only min changed, then restore the original. This produces evidence for your server build without presenting an uncertain interpretation as a universal rule.
