Google promises the Google TV Streamer (4K) at least five years of critical security updates, through September 24, 2029. NVIDIA continues to publish SHIELD TV updates, but its official support materials reviewed here do not specify a fixed support period or end date. Those commitments are not equivalent: Google states a minimum security-update term, while NVIDIA documents updates without promising a particular duration.
“Software updates” can mean security patches, new features, or a major Android version upgrade. Google’s five-year minimum is specifically about security updates; it is not a promise of five years of major Android upgrades. NVIDIA’s release history shows updates have continued, but it does not establish a guaranteed future schedule.
How long do NVIDIA SHIELD TV and Google TV Streamer receive software updates?
The Google TV Streamer (4K) has the clearer published commitment: at least five years of critical security updates, with Google’s table listing September 24, 2029 as the minimum-support date. NVIDIA has not published a fixed number of support years or a scheduled end date for SHIELD TV in the official materials covered here.

Google lists September 24, 2024 as the Google TV Streamer’s release date and September 24, 2029 as its five-year minimum date. The commitment concerns security updates, not a guaranteed duration for feature releases or major Android-version upgrades. The clock is tied to Google’s first US Google Store sale, not to the day an individual buyer sets up or purchases a unit.

For SHIELD TV, NVIDIA documents software releases and security patches but does not attach a stated support term to them. Its release notes identify SHIELD Experience 9.2.4 with security patches updated to January 2026. That is evidence of an update at that point in time, not a promise about how long future updates will continue.
So the short answer is not that one device is guaranteed to be updated for longer in every sense. Google publishes a specific security-support minimum; NVIDIA’s cited official materials describe updates and their delivery but do not state a comparable end date. A buyer who needs a firm minimum can compare the Google term directly, while a buyer considering SHIELD should treat its documented update history as evidence of past support, not a forecast.
What does “software updates” mean for these devices?
An update can protect a device, change its features, or move it to a newer version of its underlying platform. These are related but distinct things, and a vendor’s evidence for one should not be treated as proof of the others. When comparing update claims, ask what kind of update is covered, whether the vendor names a minimum period, and whether the date applies to your region and model.

Security updates
Security updates address known security issues. Google’s stated minimum for the Google TV Streamer is specifically a minimum period for critical security updates. NVIDIA’s release notes report security-patch levels for particular SHIELD Experience releases, but the reviewed materials do not set a minimum support duration.
Google describes the policy for connected-home devices as at least five years of automatic security updates from the date it starts selling a device on the US Google Store. Its device table lists the Google TV Streamer (4K) and Voice Remote as released September 24, 2024, and gives September 24, 2029 as the five-year minimum date. That date is the useful point of comparison for the stated term; it does not tell you the exact day a future patch will arrive.
Feature and system updates
Feature releases may change device behavior or add functionality. NVIDIA’s SHIELD Experience release notes document system updates, and the company’s history includes SHIELD Experience 9.0, identified as an Android 11 platform update. That historical upgrade shows that a platform update occurred; it does not promise a regular Android upgrade cadence or a future version.
Google’s published five-year minimum should likewise not be read as a five-year major Android-upgrade commitment. A security-support term answers how long a vendor says it will provide a type of protection; it does not, by itself, establish how many platform or feature upgrades will arrive. If a product page or update announcement describes a feature or Android version, that is evidence about that release, not an automatic extension of the security term.

How do the published update commitments compare?
The most useful comparison separates the stated duration from the update evidence. Google publishes a minimum term for security support. NVIDIA publishes release information and explains how updates are delivered, but the reviewed pages do not provide an equivalent minimum term.
| Device | Published duration | What the official materials establish | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google TV Streamer (4K) | At least five years of critical security updates; Google lists September 24, 2029 as the minimum date. | Google’s support table lists September 24, 2024 as the release date, says the term runs from the first US Google Store sale, and marks the device as currently receiving critical security updates. | A defined security-support minimum, not a promise of major Android-version upgrades for the same period. |
| NVIDIA SHIELD TV / SHIELD TV Pro | No fixed support period or end date stated in the NVIDIA support materials reviewed. | NVIDIA documents SHIELD Experience releases and says it pushes updates to devices. SHIELD Experience 9.2.4 notes security patches updated to January 2026. | Updates are documented, but the release history does not guarantee a specific future number of support years. |
Google also publishes an Australian compliance statement for Google TV Streamer (4K), model GRS6B. It describes an at-least-five-year defined support period ending no earlier than September 24, 2029, specifically for products sold in Australia. That is a geographically scoped statement; the US Google Store table and the Australian compliance statement should not be generalized into rules for every market or product variant.
The two Google statements are consistent on the five-year minimum date, but they serve different geographic contexts: the support table measures from the first US Google Store sale, while Google Australia’s compliance statement applies to products sold in Australia. For a purchase elsewhere, do not assume the wording or legal scope is identical without checking the applicable local product and support information.
NVIDIA’s FAQ is also region- and date-specific. The North America FAQ, updated January 15, 2026, lists SHIELD TV and SHIELD TV Pro (2019) as the available models and describes how software updates are pushed. “Available today” in a current-product listing concerns what that FAQ lists as available; it does not set how many years those products will receive updates.
What do the latest cited patch levels tell you?
The patch-level details are dated snapshots, not forecasts of future releases or proof that every device has received a release. They can help establish what the vendors documented at the time, but they do not replace the published duration—or the absence of one.
- NVIDIA SHIELD TV: SHIELD Experience 9.2.4 release notes say security patches are updated to January 2026.
- Google TV Streamer (4K): Google’s production firmware notes list build UTTK.260317.003 with security patches to April 2026. The firmware page was last updated October 12, 2026.
Google says firmware releases are staged. Its production-version list reflects a version once it is available for all devices, so a listed release may not appear on every Streamer at the same time. A difference between a published patch level and the version currently displayed on one device is not, by itself, evidence that the vendor has ended support.
Keep the two dates separate when comparing devices: the Google build number and April 2026 patch level describe the production firmware entry on Google’s page, while the September 2029 date is the published minimum security-support date. For SHIELD, January 2026 is the patch level identified in the 9.2.4 notes, not an announced support cutoff. Neither patch-level snapshot promises a particular cadence for subsequent releases.

How do you check for updates on each device?
Both vendors provide an on-device way to check for an update. You can also use NVIDIA’s automatic-upgrade setting for SHIELD TV; Google says updates install automatically as part of setup for Google TV Streamer. Checking the device itself is the practical way to see whether an update is available to that unit, while the vendor release notes explain what a published update contains.
Check NVIDIA SHIELD TV
- Open Settings > Device Preferences > About > System upgrade.
- To let NVIDIA’s update process install updates when available, enable Auto-upgrade.
- To check yourself, use the system-upgrade option on that screen to check for an upgrade.
NVIDIA says updates are pushed directly to SHIELD TV. Its North America FAQ, updated January 15, 2026, lists SHIELD TV and SHIELD TV Pro (2019) as available models and describes the update mechanism. That model listing is specific to the FAQ’s region and date; it is not a support-duration promise.
Check Google TV Streamer
- Open All Settings > System > About > System update.
- Follow the on-screen instructions if an update is available.
Google says updates install automatically as part of setup. During an update the device cannot cast, and Google says the process typically takes 10–12 minutes. That timing describes the update process, not the device’s support lifetime. If Google’s page lists a new production version but it has not reached your device, remember that the rollout is staged rather than assuming the update has been withdrawn.
What should you infer when choosing between them?
If your main criterion is a published minimum period for security updates, the Google TV Streamer has the more explicit commitment in the cited materials: five years from its first US Google Store sale, with a listed minimum date of September 24, 2029. If you are considering SHIELD TV, the accurate conclusion is that NVIDIA has documented continued updates, including a January 2026 patch level, but has not stated a fixed end date in the support materials reviewed.
These facts do not establish which device will receive more updates overall. A defined security term, a firmware release history, a feature update, and a major Android upgrade measure different things. Nor does a current patch date tell you how frequently updates will arrive in the future. Compare like with like: the type of update, whether a minimum duration is stated, the date and region attached to that term, and the latest official patch information you can verify for your device.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor a purchase decision, first decide whether a guaranteed minimum security period is essential to you. If it is, Google’s published five-year minimum is the clearest term here. If SHIELD’s update history matters to you, weigh the documented releases and the features you want, but do not convert that history into a promised number of future years. This comparison does not resolve questions such as price, availability in your market, or which device’s features best fit your setup; those are separate buying considerations.

When does the Google TV Streamer’s five-year update period start?
Google says the period begins when it first starts selling the device on the US Google Store. The listed release date is September 24, 2024, and the five-year minimum date is September 24, 2029; it is not a five-year clock that starts separately for each buyer.
Does Google promise five years of Android version upgrades?
No. The published minimum is for critical security updates. It does not promise five years of major Android-version upgrades or a particular feature-release schedule.
Has NVIDIA said when SHIELD TV updates will end?
The NVIDIA official support materials covered here do not state a fixed support period or scheduled end date. They document updates, including SHIELD Experience 9.2.4 with patches to January 2026, but that is not a future-support guarantee.
Why might my Google TV Streamer not show the firmware listed by Google?
Google stages firmware releases, so availability can vary while a rollout is in progress. Its production-version listing reflects a release once it is available for all devices.
Did NVIDIA guarantee Android 11 or later upgrades for SHIELD TV?
NVIDIA’s release history identifies Android 11 with SHIELD Experience 9.0 as a platform update. That historical release does not establish a recurring upgrade schedule or guarantee a later Android version.
Does the Australian Google TV Streamer support statement cover devices sold everywhere?
No. Google’s compliance statement names model GRS6B and limits its defined-support statement to products sold in Australia. The geographic scope matters when applying that statement to a purchase.
How long does a Google TV Streamer update take, and can I cast during it?
Google says an update typically takes 10–12 minutes, and the device cannot cast during the update. Those are process details, not a measure of the product’s support lifetime.
Does NVIDIA automatically send SHIELD TV updates?
NVIDIA says updates are pushed directly to SHIELD TV. Its FAQ also describes an Auto-upgrade setting and a manual system-upgrade check under Settings > Device Preferences > About > System upgrade.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Google publishes at least five years of critical security updates for Google TV Streamer (4K), through September 24, 2029. NVIDIA documents SHIELD TV updates, including a January 2026 patch level, but does not state a fixed support end date in the official materials reviewed. Neither claim should be read as a guaranteed schedule of major Android upgrades.
