There is no reliable published figure for how long a Google Nest thermostat typically lasts. Owner accounts range from a suspected failure after about four years to first-generation units still working close to ten years. Those are individual experiences, not an average or a promise of service life.
What owners report about Nest thermostat lifespan
In a Reddit discussion, one owner said their thermostat stopped sending a cooling signal after four years and that support suspected hardware failure. Other commenters in the same discussion said their first-generation thermostats were still working after nearly ten years; another described a third-generation unit in use since around 2015. These reports show that experiences vary, but they cannot establish how long a typical unit lasts.
A separate Google Nest Community thread includes third-generation owners describing low-battery or Wi-Fi trouble after roughly five to seven years. Those are reports about specific devices and circumstances, not evidence that batteries or thermostats generally fail at that age. You can read the accounts in the Reddit owner discussion and the Nest Community low-battery thread.
“Lasting” can mean different things
Local heating and cooling control
A thermostat may still control the HVAC system at the wall even if another part of its operation is impaired. If heating or cooling control has stopped, consider power, wiring, the HVAC equipment and the thermostat itself; an owner anecdote alone cannot identify the cause.

Wi-Fi, app access and online services
One owner account describes an early-generation thermostat that allegedly continued working locally but could no longer be accessed through apps. That is a user report, not confirmation of a general Google support policy. A connection or app problem should not automatically be treated as physical failure. The account appears in a Reddit discussion about online support; check current Google documentation for your exact model before drawing conclusions about service availability.
Repairability and warranty coverage
Whether repair is practical depends on the exact model, fault, applicable warranty and service options. Warranty duration describes coverage under stated conditions; it does not predict when a thermostat will stop working.

What the Nest warranty does—and does not—tell you
Nest’s Limited Warranty lists one year of coverage for Nest Thermostat E and two years for other products covered by that page. It describes additional coverage for certain eligible Nest Pro installations: two extra years for Nest Thermostat E and three extra years for a Nest Learning Thermostat, subject to the page’s conditions, including a valid Nest Pro ID where applicable. Terms can vary by product and country, so check the warranty that applies to your purchase.
The warranty page also says batteries are generally consumable parts outside warranty coverage unless a qualifying defect in materials or workmanship caused the damage. A device continuing to work after its warranty ends does not mean it is covered; reaching the end of coverage does not mean it must be replaced.

How to assess a thermostat that is acting up
- Identify what has failed. Separate loss of heating or cooling control from a low-battery warning, Wi-Fi trouble, app access or physical damage. The symptoms can have different causes.
- Check the exact model and purchase location. Use them to find the applicable warranty and service process rather than assuming all Nest thermostats have the same coverage.
- Follow Google’s battery and repair guidance. The Nest Thermostat Safety & Regulatory Guide specifies the battery to use and says to replace batteries at the same time. It advises contacting Google or an authorized provider if the thermostat or battery may be damaged, and warns that unauthorized repairs or modifications can permanently damage a device or affect warranty coverage. It states: “Nest Thermostat should only be repaired by Google or a Google authorized service provider.”
- Compare diagnosis, repair and replacement costs. Include professional diagnosis or installation if needed. Do not assume that a particular replacement part is available based on an old owner post.
- Check compatibility before replacing. Confirm that a replacement suits your HVAC configuration and installation needs. Google’s Nest Learning Thermostat product information sheet identifies the fourth-generation model as an option to compare, but does not establish that it lasts longer than earlier models.
Should you replace a Nest thermostat because of its age?
No particular age is established here as a replacement deadline. Base the decision on the problem, whether local control still works, applicable coverage, repair options and the cost and compatibility of a replacement. If you have decided to replace a failed or unsuitable unit, the Google Nest Learning Thermostat (4th generation) is one model to consider; verify current availability, compatibility, warranty and installation requirements. The available owner accounts do not show that it will last longer than another thermostat.
