The changes have arrived gradually, and the October 1 PCWorld report card sees a mixed picture: Search and a less prominent Copilot presence are bright spots, while Start and performance on PCs with 8GB of memory remain concerns.
What Microsoft set out to improve
Microsoft framed its quality effort around three priorities: performance, reliability, and well-crafted experiences. In a July 31, 2026 update, Windows chief Pavan Davuluri said many changes had been rolling out to Windows Insiders and would begin reaching Windows 11 PCs more broadly in the fall. That distinction matters: a feature shown in a preview or announced for broader delivery is not necessarily available on every PC.
Microsoft described work on memory efficiency and latency, as well as WinUI 3, the interface framework used in parts of Windows. It also highlighted a calmer Windows Search home screen, clearer results, and removal of promotional content from web results. These describe Microsoft’s stated work and intentions; they do not, by themselves, establish how much faster or more reliable every user’s PC has become.
Davuluri acknowledged the delivery gap: “We know there is more to do, especially in getting these improvements to all customers. We’re not slowing down.” CEO Satya Nadella likewise said on Microsoft’s FY26 Q3 earnings call that the company was “focused on fundamentals, prioritizing quality and serving our core users better.” Those statements capture a changed emphasis, not a measured campaign-wide result.

How the changes have reached PCs
This has been a rolling effort, not one update that transforms Windows overnight. Microsoft’s June cumulative-update documentation, for example, described File Explorer responsiveness improvements for mounting disk images as a gradual rollout beginning June 23, followed by further fixes and improvements in later updates. Microsoft uses gradual rollout to phase changes across devices, so two otherwise similar PCs may not receive a feature at the same time.
PCWorld’s October 1 report card describes Windows 11 version 26H2 as a progress report gathering changes that had been arriving in monthly updates. Windows Central’s September 30 release report similarly characterizes 26H2 as an enablement package that collects changes delivered over the preceding year, rather than a standalone feature transformation. The campaign’s six-month timeline and the 26H2 release label are therefore related, but not interchangeable: the work did not all begin with 26H2.

An earlier TechRadar opinion piece, published around the campaign’s three-month mark, listed ideas and testing-stage work such as taskbar repositioning, Start customization, faster installation work, a Driver Quality Initiative, and restore capability. That was a snapshot of proposals and tests, not proof that every item had shipped broadly by the six-month point.
Six-month report card
PCWorld’s grades are one writer’s editorial rubric, not population-wide measurements or a controlled benchmark. They are useful as a read on the visible user experience, provided they are treated as opinion rather than proof that a change helped every device.

| Area | Six-month assessment | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| Search | A−, according to PCWorld | The reviewer welcomed a calmer Search experience, clearer results, and less promotional material in web results. |
| Start | C, according to PCWorld | September brought more Start menu customization, but the reviewer judged the effect limited. |
| Copilot prominence | Positive, according to PCWorld | The reviewer said Microsoft had done a decent job keeping Copilot in its lane. This is an assessment of emphasis, not a claim that Copilot has disappeared from Windows. |
| Performance on PCs with 8GB of memory | Still a work in progress, according to PCWorld | Microsoft has described memory-efficiency and performance work, but the report card does not establish that 8GB systems are now consistently smooth. |
PCWorld also reported that September added taskbar positioning and sizing controls. The reviewer considered their impact limited. Together, the grades suggest that Microsoft has made some of the interface feel less intrusive and more adjustable, but has not resolved every familiar frustration.
What remains unresolved
Microsoft’s Windows 11 version 26H2 release-health page still listed known issues when reviewed for this assessment. The reports are scoped rather than universal: they do not mean that every Windows 11 PC is affected.

- Some USB Audio Class 1.0 devices may fail to start or produce sound. Microsoft listed mitigations or work toward a resolution.
- A narrower enterprise configuration may encounter machine-identity or domain secure-channel issues. The issue is specific to the described configuration, not a general statement about home PCs.
- Some Azure Virtual Desktop hosts using FSLogix have experienced black screens or desktop-loading problems. This is a reported virtual-desktop scenario, not evidence that ordinary Windows 11 desktops broadly have the same fault.
Release-health pages change as issues are investigated and resolved. The existence of these entries does not show that the campaign failed; it does show why “Windows is fixed” goes beyond the available evidence. For a particular affected device or organization, the live 26H2 release-health page is the relevant place to check current status and any listed mitigation.

The case for progress is real but bounded. Microsoft has made performance, reliability, and interface quality explicit priorities; changes have appeared in monthly updates and staged rollouts; and PCWorld found improvements worth recognizing in Search and Copilot’s prominence. At the same time, Start’s limited gains and the continuing 8GB-PC caveat weaken any claim of a clean sweep.

There is no campaign-wide statistic or independent longitudinal figure in the cited coverage that demonstrates how much Windows 11 improved across users. Nor do the editorial grades measure reliability rates or performance across a representative range of PCs. Nadella said Microsoft had brought focus back to core features and fundamentals, and Microsoft has described its engineering work, but those are company statements rather than independent outcome data.
My six-month verdict is therefore encouraging direction, incomplete delivery. Windows 11 has become the subject of a more visible quality effort, and some changes are useful. But rollout is staged, several outcomes remain matters of reviewer judgment, and documented issues persist in specific configurations. Progress is a fair description; “fixed” is not.
