Instagram uses Save and Download for two different jobs. Save bookmarks a post or Reel inside Instagram, while Download creates a video file on your phone. I use Save when I only need to find a video again, and Download when I need an offline copy.
The instructions below cover public Reels, your own videos, Instagram’s account export, and what to do when the Download button is missing.
Save an Instagram video inside the app
This is the simplest option and works when you do not need a file in your camera roll.
- Open Instagram and locate the post or Reel.
- Tap the bookmark icon below the post. On some screens, you may need to tap the three-dot menu and choose Save.
- To view it later, open your profile, tap the menu button, and select Saved.
You can organize saved posts into collections from the Saved area. Collections are available in the mobile app, not on computers.

Saving is only an in-app bookmark. It does not download the video and does not make it available offline. If the creator deletes the Reel, changes its visibility, or Instagram removes it, the saved item may stop working.
Download a public Reel to your phone
Instagram’s built-in downloader is the safest way to create a copy of a Reel when the creator allows downloads.
- Open the Reel in the Instagram mobile app.
- Tap Share, represented by the paper-airplane icon.
- Swipe across the sharing options and tap Download.
- Open your phone’s Photos, Gallery, or Files app and look for the new video.
This option generally applies to Reels from public accounts. A creator can disable downloads, and Instagram does not provide the same native download flow for content from private accounts.

Why I cannot see Download
The Download option is not available for every Instagram video. Check these possibilities:

| The account is private | Instagram’s native Reel downloader is intended for eligible public Reels. |
| The creator disabled downloads | The Reel can still be viewed or saved in Instagram, but the file download option is hidden. |
| It is not an eligible Reel | Instagram does not show the same download controls for every post or video format. |
| Feature rollout differences | The menu can vary by account, app version, device, or region. |
| Audio rights restrictions | The video may download, but licensed music may be removed from the downloaded copy. |
First, update Instagram from the App Store or Google Play, close and reopen the app, and check the Reel’s Share menu again. If Download is still absent, use Save, ask the creator for the original file, or use a screen recording only where doing so is legal and appropriate.
Save one of my own Reels before posting
For the cleanest copy of a video, keep the original in your phone’s camera roll or editing app before uploading it to Instagram. If you have already created the Reel in Instagram, you can usually save it before publishing:
- Create or record the Reel.
- Tap Next.
- Tap Next again if Instagram shows a second editing or publishing screen.
- Tap the Download icon at the bottom.
Instagram warns that this process does not preserve music added from Instagram’s licensed music library. The video may save without that music, even if it sounds correct inside the Instagram editor.

Save the Reel as a draft
If you are not ready to publish, tap Save draft. Drafts have important limitations:
- They are stored on the device rather than safely synced as an independent video backup.
- Signing into the same Instagram account on another phone does not necessarily make the drafts available there.
- Uninstalling the Instagram app can delete the drafts.
A draft is therefore useful for continuing an edit, but it is not a reliable backup. Export the video to your camera roll or retain the original project instead.
Recover videos I uploaded with Instagram’s account export
If you need a backup of videos you posted, Instagram provides an official account export. The labels can vary slightly by app version, but the current path is:

- Open Instagram and go to your Profile.
- Tap the menu button.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Accounts Centre.
- Choose Your information and permissions.
- Tap Export your information.
- Select Create export.
- Choose the Instagram profile to export and tap Next.
- Select Export to device.
- Choose the information categories, date range, media quality, file format, and notification email address.
- Tap Start export.
Instagram says an export can take up to 30 days. When it is ready, the download remains available for four days in Available downloads. The export is password-protected, and selecting higher-quality media requires more storage space.

This is better suited to recovering your own uploaded content than downloading one Reel quickly. For a single video, use the Reel’s Download option if it is available.
What happens to music in a downloaded Reel?
Instagram treats music from its licensed music library differently from original audio. A downloaded Reel may have no sound, or the licensed track may be removed, because your right to hear the music within Instagram does not necessarily extend to an exported file.
Reels using original audio are more likely to retain sound, although Instagram’s processing and rights checks still apply. The same limitation applies when you download your own Reel before posting: music added through Instagram’s licensed library may not be included.
Should I use an Instagram video downloader website?
Be cautious with third-party downloader sites and apps. An unofficial service does not need your Instagram password to download a public video. If one asks for your username and password, do not provide them. That can expose your account to phishing, unauthorized access, or spam.

Third-party tools can also violate Instagram’s terms, collect the URLs you submit, deliver unwanted downloads, or download content without the creator’s consent. The official alternatives are preferable:
- Use Download when Instagram provides it.
- Use Save when you only need an in-app bookmark.
- Ask the creator for the original file.
- Use a screen recording only when local law, privacy expectations, and the creator’s rights permit it.
Finally, downloading and reposting are separate actions. A public Reel is not automatically free to copy, edit, monetize, or publish elsewhere. Credit is useful, but it does not replace permission when permission is required.

What is the difference between saving and downloading an Instagram video?
Save adds the post or Reel to Profile → Menu → Saved inside Instagram. Download creates a video file on your phone. A saved video is not available offline and can disappear if the original is deleted or made unavailable.

The Reel may come from a private account, the creator may have disabled downloads, or the post may not support Instagram’s native downloader. App version, account, device, and region can also affect which controls appear.
Where does an Instagram Reel go after I download it?
On a phone, check the Photos or Gallery app first. If it is not there, check the Files app and its Downloads folder. The exact location depends on the device and operating system.
Can I download an Instagram Reel with its music?
Not always. Music from Instagram’s licensed library may be removed from the downloaded file. Original audio is more likely to remain, but Instagram’s rights and processing rules still apply.
The Bottom Line
Use Save for an Instagram bookmark and Download for an actual phone copy. Native downloads are mainly available for public Reels when the creator permits them, and the file may include a watermark or lose licensed music. For your own videos, keep the original source file or use Accounts Centre → Your information and permissions → Export your information for a broader backup. Avoid any downloader that asks for your Instagram password, and get permission before reposting someone else’s video.
