HyperTransport and PCI Express (PCIe) are different interconnects that can coexist in one computer platform. HyperTransport traditionally links processors with chipsets or other processors; PCIe connects the platform to graphics cards, storage, networking and other peripherals. A chipset or bridge can translate between the two, letting a system use HyperTransport internally while exposing PCIe expansion slots and devices.

What HyperTransport connects

AMD defines HyperTransport as a full-duplex, point-to-point chip and board interconnect based on low-voltage differential signaling. Its role is to carry communication between processors and other platform components, such as a northbridge or I/O hub. In multiprocessor designs, it can also carry coherent processor-to-processor traffic; in I/O connections, it can operate in a non-coherent mode.

An archived AMD technical white paper describes HyperTransport links with widths of 2, 4, 8 or 16 bits and frequencies from 200 MHz to 1 GHz. Those figures describe the technology documented in that paper, not a guarantee for every HyperTransport implementation. AMD’s HyperTransport white paper also identifies low latency, high bandwidth and built-in error detection as design features.

What PCI Express connects

PCIe is a standardized serial interconnect used primarily for peripherals and expansion, including graphics, NVMe storage, networking and FPGA devices. It can also serve as a chip-to-chip connection or a bridge to other protocols. The PCI-SIG specification defines the architecture, link attributes, fabric management and programming interface for compliant systems and peripherals. PCI-SIG’s specification page lists PCI Express Base Specification Revision 7.1 as approved on September 17, 2026.

ELUTENG PCIE USB 3.0 Card 7 Ports PCI Expree to USB Expansion Card Super Speed 5Gbps PCI-e USB3 Hub Controller Adapter for Windows 11/10/8/7/XP/Vista
  • 【7 ports PCIe USB card】 There is a 2-phase independent power supply module, which can feed one interface per output port to escape power shortage. Can operate without an external or auxiliary power supply; the seven interfaces operate independently and do not affect each other. Seven USB 3.0 Type A ports can be added externally to the PC case. Note: Not compatible with PS3/PS4.
  • 【High Speed Transmission】USB3.0 theoretical speed up to 5Gbps, provides 10 times faster transmission speed than USB2.0. This usb expansion card enables quick access to files and transfer of HD movies, photos, music, etc.
  • 【Stable power supply】The usb pcie card adopt NEC720201&NEC720210 chip. The USB interface can supply 5V2A power to external devices. Solid capacitors with good performance are used for low impedance, low temperature stability, and high temperature wave resistance.
  • 【7 independent solid capacitors】Each interface has a stable voltage solid capacitor to ensure a stable power supply. The dielectric material of the solid capacitors is made of conductive polymer material, which has the advantages of high stability, long life, and low ESR (faster charging and discharging speed).
  • 【Wide compatibility】 PCI-E X1 X4 X8 X16 compatible. Note: Not compatible with older PCI, backward compatible with USB 2.0 / 1.1, 64-bit and 32-bit Windows 11 / 10 / 8 / 7 / XP / Linux, not Mac compatible. Note: WIN8 and WIN10/11 users do not need to install the drive; XP and WIN7 users can download, unzip, install, and complete. (The corresponding installation directory for CD is DRIVERSǐ201R30230.EXE.)

PCIe link rates depend on generation and implementation. AMD’s current PCIe technology information lists supported implementations from PCIe Gen1 at 2.5 GT/s on an x1 link up to Gen5 configurations reaching 32 GT/s per lane in supported blocks. These are per-link specification rates, not application throughput or a direct comparison with a HyperTransport system. AMD’s PCIe technology page gives the implementation details.

How the two work together

  1. Processor fabric: A processor can use HyperTransport to communicate with a chipset, I/O hub or another processor. Coherent links can support processor-to-processor traffic.
  2. Bridge boundary: A chipset or bridge can terminate a HyperTransport connection and expose PCIe or PCI-compatible I/O on the other side. AMD’s documentation describes HyperTransport connections to PCI-X bridges, southbridges, FPGAs and other silicon. AMD’s HyperTransport-to-I/O documentation explains this role.
  3. Peripheral fabric: PCIe then carries traffic between the platform and devices such as graphics cards, storage drives or network adapters, using the PCIe software and hardware ecosystem.

In practical terms, HyperTransport and PCIe are not rival names for the same connection. They can occupy different layers of a platform: one serving processor and chipset communication, the other serving standardized I/O and expansion.

HyperTransport vs. PCIe: the key differences

Feature HyperTransport PCI Express
Typical role Historically links processors, chipsets and I/O controllers. Primarily links peripherals, accelerators and expansion components.
Coherency Can carry coherent processor traffic; also supports non-coherent I/O. Ordinary PCIe is an I/O fabric; coherency requires additional protocols or platform features.
Topology Point-to-point links that can scale across multiple connections. Hierarchical switched fabric defined by PCI-SIG.
Interoperability Works with platforms and silicon designed to support HyperTransport; bridges connect it to wider I/O ecosystems. Broad industry specification and compliance ecosystem for compatible systems and devices.

Can a HyperTransport system use PCIe graphics cards or storage?

Yes, if its chipset or bridge provides compatible PCIe interfaces and the system supports the particular device. The graphics card or storage device communicates over PCIe; the processor-side platform may use HyperTransport between the CPU and chipset. The presence of HyperTransport does not by itself make a system compatible with every PCIe device: compatibility depends on the actual board, firmware, slot or storage interface, and device requirements.

How platform designs changed

HyperTransport was used in AMD and MIPS processor connections, while PCIe became a mainstream local and backplane interconnect across many market segments. The title-specific technical article describes that broader adoption. Some later designs integrated more I/O capabilities into the processor platform rather than relying on a separate HyperTransport-connected chipset.

For example, AMD’s AM4 documentation shows PCIe 4.0 used for graphics and NVMe, alongside processor-direct SATA and USB connectivity. That example illustrates platform integration; it does not mean all AM4 processors or motherboards expose identical connections. AMD’s AM4 documentation provides the platform-specific details.

HyperTransport also appears in embedded and hardware interconnect contexts. Samtec describes it as a packet-based, scalable, low-latency point-to-point technology for processors, coprocessors and I/O controllers, and documents connector support for HT3. Samtec’s HyperTransport information is relevant when considering physical implementation.

Which is faster?

There is no universal speed winner established by the available specifications. HyperTransport frequency and width figures and PCIe per-lane transfer rates describe different link designs and generations; neither alone determines end-to-end application performance. Latency and throughput depend on the specific implementation, topology, bridge, workload and device. A meaningful comparison needs measurements on the platforms and workload in question.
