Google AI Overviews are associated with fewer clicks to traditional search results, while clicks on links inside the summaries appear uncommon in the available U.S. panel data. In Pew Research Center’s analysis of 900 U.S. adults’ browsing activity in March 2025, people clicked a traditional result link on 8% of visits to Google pages with an AI summary, compared with 15% of visits to pages without one. A link in the summary was clicked on just 1% of visits to pages that showed a summary. Those are observations from one panel and one month—not a forecast of the traffic loss for every website.
Google’s separate account says total organic click volume across Search was relatively stable year over year and average click quality increased. These claims address different scopes: behavior on result pages with summaries versus aggregate traffic across Google Search.
What do the numbers say about clicks?
The clearest user-behavior finding is that traditional result links received fewer clicks on Google visits where an AI Overview appeared in Pew’s March 2025 panel. The summary’s own links also drew few clicks in that sample. Together, the figures indicate that an Overview can answer a search without a visit to a cited website, but they do not establish a universal effect for all queries or publishers.

These are percentages of visits in a particular panel, not percentages of a publisher’s traffic, impressions, or revenue. For example, the 8% and 15% figures compare visits to pages with and without a summary; they do not mean that every site lost seven percentage points of its click-through rate. A site’s exposure depends on whether its audience searches for queries that trigger Overviews, whether its pages appear for those queries, and how people respond to the results.

Does being cited in an AI Overview send traffic to a website?
A citation can provide visibility, but it should not be treated as a reliable promise of a visit. In Pew’s March 2025 panel, a link within the summary was clicked in 1% of visits to pages with summaries. Citation presence, citation count, impressions, and referral sessions are separate measures.
What a citation does—and does not—show
- A citation means a source link is displayed in the Overview. It does not show how many people saw or clicked that link.
- A cited page may not be among the organic results displayed alongside the Overview. A 2026 crawler study found that a substantial portion of cited domains in its sample were not among the co-displayed first-page results.
- A citation does not establish that every statement in a generated answer is supported by the cited page. The crawler study reported unsupported claims in its sample, based on its own claim-verification process; that finding is not a universal error rate.
- A citation is not itself evidence of a later referral session or a change in a page’s ranking. The studies summarized here do not establish either outcome for an individual site.
The practical distinction is simple: a citation can make a source visible in the answer, but only a click creates a visit. The available panel evidence says those clicks were uncommon in the observed month.
Why does Google say organic clicks are stable?
Google’s aggregate statement does not directly contradict Pew’s comparison of visits with and without Overviews. Google Search VP Liz Reid wrote on August 6, 2025, that “Overall, total organic click volume from Google Search to websites has been relatively stable year-over-year.” Google also said average click quality had increased, defining “quality clicks” as visits where users do not quickly return to Search.

That is Google’s account of overall traffic across its Search ecosystem. Pew examined how people interacted with particular result pages depending on whether a summary appeared. Aggregate click volume can remain relatively stable even if a specific group of searches receives fewer clicks—for example, if other queries or traffic sources offset the difference. The statement does not independently verify what happened to every query, publisher, or page.
When comparing claims about AI Overviews, check what each source actually measured: total organic clicks, clicks on traditional links, summary-link clicks, session endings, impressions, click-through rate, or click quality. Those outcomes are related, but they are not interchangeable.
What do the different studies measure?
The evidence includes a user panel, a research-paper analysis of that panel, a crawler study, an experiment abstract, and a vendor’s keyword comparison. Their numbers should not be combined into one expected traffic-loss percentage because the methods, samples, time windows, and outcomes differ.

The 2026 panel paper revisits the March 2025 observations rather than measuring a different period of browsing. Its regression analysis strengthens the evidence that the observed association was not explained by the query attributes and participant-level effects included in its models, but it does not turn that panel into a traffic forecast for an individual site.
The crawler study answers a different question: what a search system returned for a set of queries over time. Its 55,393 queries, 19 categories, and 40-day window describe that study’s sample, not the share of all searches that trigger an Overview. Likewise, Ahrefs’ CTR comparison is a vendor’s observational keyword analysis, not a randomized estimate. Keep each result attached to its method and denominator.
How should a website owner measure the effect?
Measure your own search performance over time rather than applying a study percentage to your site. The aim is to identify whether relevant query groups changed, when the change happened, and whether clicks shifted relative to impressions; the available evidence does not provide a guaranteed optimization fix.

- Set a baseline. Choose a consistent period before the change you want to investigate and record organic impressions, clicks, and click-through rate for relevant pages or query groups. Keep the date range and market consistent.
- Group comparable searches. Separate informational queries from other intents where your data allows, and distinguish branded from non-branded searches. Do not compare a changing mix of queries as though it were a stable audience.
- Watch impressions and clicks together. A click decline alongside similar impressions suggests a different pattern from a decline in both. Neither pattern alone proves an Overview caused the change.
- Annotate dates and external changes. Record ranking changes, site releases, seasonality, and other known shifts. If you cannot verify which queries showed an Overview, treat that attribution as uncertain rather than labeling all movement as Overview-driven.
- Compare over more than one short interval. Recheck the same query groups across successive periods. Small samples and temporary changes can make a single before-and-after comparison misleading.
- Separate visibility from visits. If a page is cited, that is not the same as a referral session. Use the measures available in your search and analytics reporting, and do not infer citation clicks from citation presence alone.
For a useful report, state the outcome, period, geography, query sample, and comparison group. If you have only overall site traffic, you can describe that trend but cannot isolate the effect of Overviews from changes in other searches, rankings, or channels.

The evidence supports a qualified conclusion: when an Overview appeared in Pew’s observed U.S. panel, people clicked traditional results less often and ended browsing more often than on pages without one, while summary citations generated few clicks. It does not support a universal loss rate for websites.

Interpretation by question
- Are organic clicks affected? Yes, lower traditional-result clicking was observed in the panel, and separate analyses point in a similar direction. The size of an individual site’s impact is not established by those averages.
- Do citations restore the visit? Not reliably in the panel: summary links were rarely clicked. Visibility in an answer and referral traffic should be reported separately.
- Is Google’s aggregate statement incompatible? No. Overall Search traffic and behavior on Overview-triggering result pages are different scopes and can move differently.
- Can the studies be averaged into one forecast? No. They use different methods and denominators, and some measure generated results rather than user behavior.
For publishers, the defensible approach is to track query-level impressions and clicks over time, preserve the scope of each comparison, and avoid promising that citation visibility will compensate for fewer traditional-result visits.

Do Google AI Overviews appear for every search?
No. In the March 2025 panel analyzed by Chapekis, Lieb, Shah, and Smith, 18% of observed Google searches produced an Overview. A separate 2026 crawler study found activation varied by query and topical category, so that panel share is not a universal current trigger rate.
Does an AI Overview citation mean Google endorses every claim on the page?
No. A citation identifies a linked source, not a guarantee that each generated statement is supported by it. Xu, Iqbal, and Montgomery reported unsupported claims in the sample they checked; their result applies to that sample and verification method.
Can I calculate my website’s expected traffic loss from these studies?
Not reliably. The studies use different populations, query sets, periods, and outcomes, and none supplies a transferable forecast for an individual publisher. Your own trend by comparable query groups is more informative than applying a panel or keyword-study percentage.
Are the 2026 results based on a different month of user behavior?
The 2026 paper by Chapekis, Lieb, Shah, and Smith reanalyzes the March 2025 browsing panel, rather than reporting a new month of user activity. The 2026 crawler study is a separate dataset, but it measures returned search results rather than user clicks.
